Lois unfortunately I can't at this stage help you as I have done very little research on the American Clinton line. I have been researching the English line as I beleive that is the common line for the Clinton family. I would be interested in your line and how it ties in. I am currently trying to find the link from England into Ireland which is proving to be a very difficult task.
Yes I do have that info but the dates I have are a little different. Renebault according to my research was born about 1083 and his fater William was born 1062 and married Maud D'Aques. Williams father was Raoul or Ralph born about 1040 and married Agnes Stigand. Raoul/Ralphs father was Gerard born 1018 and possibly married Helesinde de Normandie.Tancrede de Hauteville fits in as follows if the information I have is correct.
Tancrede - son Rabel born about 920 - Gerald born about 950 - Ralph born 978 and then as above Gerard born 1018.
Hope thats of some interest to you. If you would like to discuss further drop me a line direct at robandliz(a)xtra.co.nz

Thanks Rob, Wikipedia has the early family as De Tankerville. Do you know where Tancrede de Hautvelle is located? I 'm descended through Osbert. I have Renebault's Father as William Born 1035 and his Father was Raoul, born 1005 and his Father, was Gerard, born 975 . William 's wife was Maud D'Arques. You probably have all that info. Do you know who Lawrence Clinton's parents were? I live in Ct. and Lawrence the 2nd came to Ct. and the family settled in what is now know as North Haven. It was then part of New Haven Colony. The area they owned and farmed is known as Clintonville. Lawrence,s grave is on the old town green and he was a Capt. in the Rev. War. Let me know if you find out anything more as time goes on and let me offer you help if you need any info on the Ct. Clintons Lois

The general theory although I do not think it has been 100% proved is that the Clinton family is connected to the Tancarville family through Renebault de Tancarvilles sons Geoffrey and Osbert.Renebault with his brothers accompanied the Conqueror in his victorious march into England and were rewarded by him with large possessions. They received the manors of Kenilworth, Colehill and Maxtoke in Warwickshire, and the manor of Glimpton. Renebault received from the Conqueror, the lordship of Clinton in Oxfordshire and he acquired his surname from this place.I think there was a third son Guillaume but I think he retained the de Tancarville surname. There is another theory that the de Tancarville family can be traced back to Tancrede de Hauteville but I've yet to find any evidence to support this.
Rob

Hello Wes,
I am the fellow who first started this particular thread in 2006 & I just wanted to introduce myself. I can't answer your question about the father of Lawrence Clinton (1643-1707 ), but wondered how you are descended in the family. Please reply privately below.

Hi Wes, I've spent a great deal of time on this as well. I read somewhere that the Lawrence Clinton whose father was Harrington, was a child here. I have a will made in England in 1622 by Lawrence Clinton. I thought if it were our Lawrence, he probably made out the will before he came here. These wills are extremely difficult to read due to the spelling of the time and also the way they made the letters. I got that info through the British Archives and you have to pay to download these. I did , recently, get 3 more wills sent to me, but at the moment, I've not been able to spend the time to decipher them. I still can't make the connection of our Lawrence to anyone in England. I have, however, downloaded the Clintons from 1090. Our first grandparents were Gerard De Tankerville - wife unknown. He was born in 975. You can get to this info by going into wikipedia and putting in William de Clinton. You can see early paintings done of some of ou!
r family members. One was done by Hans Holbein and it hangs in Windsor Castle. This artist was the artist of Henry the 8th. They came to England with William the Conquerer and because he treated his friends well, they were all set up in high places in the courts of England. We have a very rich history. The Admiral of the English Navy under Elizabeth the 1st, was a relative of ours . Not a grandfather, however. He married Bessie Blount who was the first mistress of Henry The 8th and who was the only one to give him a son who lived. If I could only truly come upon the info as to who Lawrence's parents were I could finally figure more of our lineage. I can't even trace my own Father's, father without running into very questionable info. Right now I can't help, but I , too, have spent many hours trying and I'll keep at it and let you know when I find something. It can be quite frustrating. Hope I've helped a little. I come down from Lawrence1,2an!
d3 Jesse Eton Clinton , Bemon Clinton, who had Mary Orminda Clinton,
who was my Great Grandmother who married William Cook. Let me know if I can be of further help. Lois

As I mentioned I got my information from another individual. I can give you his email address, however it has been several years since I last heard from him. There is another individual who may help, but I would rather not published either email address publicly. If you give me your email address, I will send both to you. You can send it to me at Miscavich(a)hotmail.com.

Thanks you for responding. I also had that but what is weird is that Harrington died tony a couple years after they "arrived." Is there any way you can follow up or pass me on to someone whom may know about this? Thanks again.

Wes, This may or may not help you, but I'm passing it on just in case. A source from NZ gave me this info (and he may have gotten it from Guy Clinton's works). He also said that Lawrence was the son of Harrington Fiennes Clinton. Harrington was born in 1614 in Kirkstead , Lincolnshire , England. That's all I have. I have no source information. Just offering this as a possible clue.
Jane

Ok, any Clintons out there who spent/spend as much time looking for info probably couldn't find anything about Lawrence clinton, born in RI 1642-1707, that proves who his real father is. I know he married 3 times and there was some serious legal matters but I need to know who his real father was. The only thing I stumbled upon was a piece that was written by Guy Clinton saying that Harrington was his father. I find that weird considering there are no papers and no mother and when Harrington died he was adopted. I do know that some of the Clintons had to flee England due to civil war. So unless I find out more about Lawrence I will never know if my family forks from England or Ireland. Anybody with help will become legendary. Thanks.
Wes Clinton
