There is a Clinton family in Haywood Co. Tn. They came from Scotland in 1846. John Clinton was married in Girthon, Kirkcudbright to Agnes McClure. They left Scotland with a very large family in 1846 from Liverpool on the ship Severn. I don't think they are related to your Clinton's but just thought that maybe you could search in Scotland as I don't know where the name originated but John was born in 1801 there. It appears that his family lived with him, from the 1841 census, his father and Agnes' mother and possibly her sister. I have a copy of John's notes as they crossed the ocean and find it very interesting. Agnes had a miscarriage as they crossed also.

I am researching a John Clinton born 1815 Orange county N.C. No known parents or siblings. He moved to Marshall county Tenn and married there. Many Clintons moved to Jackson county Tenn from N.C including descendants of Matthias Clinton. I think my John must have been related somehow but do not know how.

With all this recent conversation about the Clintons in Tennessee, I thought
I would pose my question: Does anyone know the parents of Robert Clinton
who was married to Sarah Coonrad in Bolivar, TN in 1826? We know that he
was born in South Carolina and that his father was born in South Carolina,
and I have tried to link him to Richard Clinton Jr. and Richard Clinton III
from the Carolinas but so far to no avail.
I do know that my Robert Clinton's mother died in Logan County, KY in late
December, 1867, but I don't know her name. Does anyone have knowledge of
this line?
Rita Clinton

My family started in Orange county North Carolina. My GGG GF was John Clinton born in 1815 to unknown parents. He migrated to Marshall county Tenn ,surely not alone, and married Martha A Griffis July 4 1846. To date, we do not know of any of John's brothers or sisters. I do know there was also a Matthias Clinton family also in Orange county around the same time John's parents should have been together. Infact, there is another John Clinton born 1818 in Orange county also. There must be a connection somewhere with these two families. Amy Clinton Leck

Ok The Matthias family is not matching the dates you have. John born 1762 Orange county N.C did have two boys named George Washington 1814 and a John L 1818. Look a little farther down this line to see if the names are repeated in this family or not. I will also look in my notes to see if I find another John and George. Amy

Yes this is the same line. Matthias born around 175? in North Carolina. Matthias had 3 boys Jesse John and Samuel. This John 1762 did have a son named John Lennington 1818 and he also served in Civil war. I thought this was our John but this man married a Nancy Grisham. Our John married a Martha Griffis. I have not found the connection between the two families yet. But there must be one. Being they are all from the same birth place and both moved to Tenn around the same time. strange my Great grandfather is also named George Washington Clinton and his father was Thomas Jefferson Clinton!

I was wondering if those of you searching the CLINTON's in MA have run across the name Barney CLINTON or Bernard CLINTON who was married to a woman named Ann whose last name may have been BURNS? My great-grandmother was Ellen CLINTON who was born in 1854 in Milton, MA. I obtained this information from the Massacusetts Archives website. She married twice, the first to a man with the last name of WHELAN or WHALEN and then married my great-grandfather Patrick FOY on 9 Feb 1893 in Canton, MA.
Thanks

Hello,
?I feel like I'm evesdropping on your conversation-but it is posted on the net so sometimes I check it-though I'm pretty much at a standstill........this happens with the Clintons.
However, I did print this out-as Joanne was definitely a Clinton cousin of mine-perhaps yours----and she just passed away last fall.??????? Anything that you might have would be most valuable to KEEP? -- She and I have exchanged things for just over 10 years when we "found" each other searching in Jackson Co., Ill------for our JOhn B......father of our "brothers"????? her John Randolph and my Thomas Zachariah-children of Mary Davis and John B............
?She kept in contact with at least 4 others that I know she would mention all the time......but I don't happen to recognize your name/email.??
?I am most sure that her daughter has copies of all of her work--?? I don't know as she ever has time to share via internet.
?So, guess, if you have anthing further that might lead to our block-JOhn B's father we have "assumed" had to be Zachary-but cannot prove where he was -in TN or KY_
Thanks-and as I said,??????? do keep anything you find from Joanne's notes.........
Margaret in PA

Here's some information from a history of the Clinton family by Guy Clinton
b. 1867 (transcribed by Joanne Truman). You may already have it. If not, I
thought you might be interested.
"Richard Clinton was a member of the North Carolina Assembly (House of
Commons) in November 1779. Numerous entries in many volumes appear
concerning his services. In November 1779 he joined in a protest against
the Confiscation Act. In 1769, a Robert Clinton joined in a request to
members of His Majesty's Council to have inspectors (of crops) sent to
Orange County, N.C.
In Vol. 8 is the entry that Lord Thomas Pelham-Clinton was elected to the
English House of Commons because forty to fifty thousand pounds were spent
annually in Westminster by his father the Duke of New-Castle.
William Clinton is listed at Charleston, S. C. as a member of Capt. Williams
Company of Orange County Militia, Aug. 21, 1776. In May 1775, William
Clinton had joined in a petition to His Majesty's Council to confirm their
title to land which had been transferred to South Carolina by a change of
boundary between the two provinces.
In vol. 16, Clinton appears as the name of a town in Sampson County, N. C.
In Vol. 23, it is stated that Peter Clinton was named a Justice of the Peace
Dec. 23, 1778 by the Assembly of North Carolina.
In "Old Records of the War Department" Nathaniel Clinton appears as a
soldier of the Fifth South Carolina Regiment. He enlisted Feb. 23, 1778."

correct one. He has a brother named john linnington B:1818 but his father

Hi. i have been searching for my ggg gf John Clinton. And in doing so I have came across your George washington Clinton. His father is John Lennington Clinton born 1762 in orange county North Carolina. Since his birth year is so close to my ggg gf i just knew I had broke through the wall. Unfortunately, this proved to not be my family since this John married a Nancy Grisham and not a Martha Griffis. Any way yes John has 8 children and John's Father is Matthias Clinton and his mother is Elizabeth. There should be plenty of info about Matthias for you to study. I just know there has to be relation somewhere. But because we have no idea of my john's parent's names I must assume Matthias and John's father were brothers. They both (John L. and my John) lived in the same county and both moved to Tennessee both served in the civil war also. Your John lived to be around 90! Ours died shortly after returning home from the war. Contact me if you need more info. Amy Clinton Leck
