Surname: Clinton, Harmon
-------------------------
Does anyone know of a "Bessie" Clinton who lived in the Fordham Road/Webster
Avenue area of the Bronx in the early 1940's? She had a brother, "Dutch"
Harmon, and a number of children. She was in her 30's or 40's then, so
I don't expect her to be alive but I am hoping some of her children or
grandchildren may read this.
Thanks for any help you can give me. I actually want to find her brother,
if he is still alive.
Hi, everyone. My name is SHEILA CLINTON-REED. I am searching for
information about GEORGE WELMOND CLINTON, my paternal, g-grandfather.
He was born in Albany, NY, about 1857. Family, oral history, says that
he goes back to DeWITT CLINTON.
My g-grandmother, Cora Estelle RAMSDELL, married him about 1890. No one
in the family knows where the marriage took place. Somewhere in
Montana, we think. Or, perhaps, Washington State. They settled down in
Tacoma, WA. At that time he was some sort of city official. Mayor, or,
City Manager, or Superintendent of Streets.
He and my g-grandmother had three children: RALPH WELMOND CLINTON,
EDNA, AND GRACE. She ended up divorcing him following the US
Presidential election of 1892. Then, she homesteaded a lumber claim in
Washington. He, it seems, dropped off the face of this earth! {:-D
Can anyone give me any info about him? I would sincerely appreciate any
and all info regarding the DeWITT CLINTON family, as well. Thank you!
Sheila Clinton-Reed
Hi Sharon,
I, actually, am not a Clinton descendant, but a Dewitt descendant, so I, therefore, connect with DeWitt Clinton through his mother Maria [Mary] DeWitt. I have a friend who is a Clinton descendant and he knows he is connected to Dewitt through his ggg-grandmother Phoebe Clinton. We are trying to figure out where Phoebe fits in. Through process of elimination we know Phoebe was not DeWitt's sister or daughter. So now we are trying to find out if she was his grandaughter or perhaps a daughter or granddaughter of one of his brothers. My friend does have some Clinton info, but pretty much his direct line. If you will send me your Clinton's first name, date of birth and place of birth I will check his files.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Nancy
Just want to Thank all of you who responded to my query. And Elaine Thanks a Bunch for coming up with the names of DeWitt's children. Now I have some more leads. Thanks again everyone.
Nancy Scott
Would anyone happen to have any info on the children of DeWitt Clinton and Mary Franklin. I have read that they had 7 sons and 3 daughters, am interested in any or all of them. Also, would anyone happen to have a Phoebe Clinton born 1806-1810. She died in 1897 and she married William Leonard. He was born July 15, 1805 and died August 31, 1854. It is believed that Phoebe was a descendant of DeWitt Clinton, perhaps a daughter or grandaughter. Any help at all would be so appreciated. My e-mail address is: nancys12(a)gte.net if anyone would like to e-mail me directly.
Thank You,
Nancy Scott
Hi List!
I found a JOHN CLINTON in the 1790 census for NY - two of them actually.
John Sr. had 2 white males 16 & up and 1 white female
John Jr. had 1 while male 16 & up, 3 white males under 16 and 2 white females
Anybody have a clue about who these families were? I don't recall a John
being connected to the NY Clintons. They could have been connected to
Archibald from Chester PA. Any comments welcome!!
Thanks
Joanne

Surname: Clinton
-------------------------
I am searching for my husband's grgrgrandfather and his family. He was
John CLINTON, b 1814-1815 NC or TN. He married Martha A. GRIFFIS on 4 July,
1846 Marshall Co., TN. He served in the Civil War and died serving, but
not sure what year. If anyone is searching for this same family, or has
info to share, I would be very grateful. I would be more than happy to
share what info that I do have.
Thanks
Debbie
Hopefully someone will chime in here and we can put our heads together on
these NC Clintons.
I have seen references to the Old Duplin and Sampson county branches, but so
far have seen nothing to link them to the Orange branch.
The two things I'm most interested in is whether Alice Clinton (Chamblee)
was the daughter of Jesse and Rachel Clinton as I strongly believe, and who
Jesse Clinton's parents were.
According to an article on the Duke history in the Durham Morning Herald
last year, the land that Washington Duke built the now-Duke Homestead on was
land that Jesse Clinton left to Mary Clinton Duke when he died in April
1847. Mary died in November of the same year. Her sister Martha married
William Woods in 1858, but they lived on a farm adjacent to the Duke farm --
which makes me think that Martha also inherited land that she brought into
the marriage. The article and Jean Anderson's history of Durham both
mentioned that Jesse Clinton was "well off". With my family that usually
means "off his rocker", but I'm pretty sure they meant financially
comfortable. :) If he left a will, I was not able to find record of it on
my trip to Salt Lake City. Does anyone have access to Orange County, NC
will indeces? Since Alice died in 1851, that might answer the first
question and give a clue to the second.
Renee, in reply to your post on the Orange Co. NC Clinton marriages in which you asked if anyone had information about the Clinton marrriages you listed. The only one I know anything about is:
Bride: Eliza Clinton
Groom: William Whitted, Jr
Bond Date: 03 Oct 1819
County: Orange
Record #: 04 038
Bondsman: John Young
Witness: J Taylor, Jr.
Bond #: 000103080
William Whitehead, the husband of Eliza, was given a portion of the property of her father, William Sampson Clinton, by the Sampson County, NC court on July 28, 1828. As far as I know at this point, this is the Eliza Clinton and William Whitted, Jr. who were married in Orange County on Oct. 3, 1819. I'm assuming Eliza was the daughter of William S Clinton's first wife, Sarah Sewell. Anyone else who has any information about this couple or their descendants, please let me know. Thanks, Pam

Back in January, Dawn Winans posted the results of a search on NC Marriage
Bonds from Ancestry.com. Is anyone else working these lines?
I know that Jesse Clinton and Rachel Vickers were the parents of Martha L.
Clinton (Woods) and Mary Caroline Clinton (Duke). I strongly suspect Alice
to have been an older sister to Martha and Mary.
I also know that Sarah Clinton (Whitaker), John Clinton (m. Rainy Duke),
Nancy Clinton (Knight) where among the children of John and Nancy Gresham
Clinton -- and that John and Samuel who married Eliza Allen were brothers.
I'd like to determine the relationships among all of these Orange County
Clintons. Looking at the names of the bondsmen and the spouses, I am seeing
the same names popping up in all of these families.
Also, does anyone know if Rainy Duke who married John Clinton in 1836 is the
same as the Reany Clinton who was daughter of Dicey Jones and Tyler Duke --
and sister to Washington Duke -- born 1807, died 1848)

Surname: Bougret dit Dufort, Destroismaisons dit Picard, Threehouse, Defore,
Dafoe, Strong
-------------------------
I am searching for the marriage of Julius Dufort/Defore/Dafoe and Marie
Marcelline Destroismaisons dit Picard. They appear in the 1850 census of
Peru, Clinton Cty, NY as Julius and Sally Defore. They had one child, Phoebe
age 2. They were both born in Quebec, Canada. I believe Julius was b about
1820 and Sally 1825. They were probably married about 1845. There are baptismal
records at St. John the Baptist, Keesville, NY for children born in 1855,
1858, and 1863. They appear in the 1860 census of Chesterfield, Essex Cty,
NY and by 1865 had migrated to Michigan. I believe Julius is related to
the family of Lewis and Charlotte Bougret dit Dufort and Sally is related
to the family of Jean Baptiste Destroismaisons dit Picard (Threehouse).
I also believe that some of the Duforts Americanized their name to Strong.
Any information will be a help.
