Is anyone interested in Arkansas Clinton's? At my
public library they just got in 4 big books of
Arkansas Deaths. The years range from 1914-abt. the
mid 1940's. It lists the persons name, age, death
date, county of death, etc... There are some Clinton's
in the books. I will copy them and post them to the
group if anyone is interested. Let me know.

Surname: Clinton, Roberts
-------------------------
Seeking descendents of Henry E. and Mary E (Roberts) Clinton residing in
Seymour (New Haven County), Conn. in 1870 U.S. Census.
Hi,
I am looking for any info on JAMES SAMUEL CLINTON, born August 5, 1821, in
South Carolina. This info was obtained from his pension records.
JAMES SAMUEL CLINTON moved to Georgia around 1840 -1849(he married in 1849 to
CHARLOTTA ELIZABETH WEATHERFORD). He lived in Cobb County around 1850 and in
his household was an EDWARD DUKES and his family. This DUKES family live in
and around him all of his life as his sons married the daughters of WILEY
DUKES, son of EDWARD DUKES.
JAMES SAMUEL CLINTON was a lawyer until the war started and then he enlisted.
Due to his illness of diabetes he only served a short time but was honorably
discharged. The CLINTON FAMILY lived mostly in PAULDING COUNTY and HARRELSON
COUNTY, GEORGIA. Later his sons lived in FLOYD COUNTY, GEORGIA. His
daughter (my direct descendant) lived the last of her life in FULTON COUNTY,
GEORGIA.
I have a great deal of info on JAMES SAMUEL CLINTON from the time that he
came to Georgia and can track every where he was but my problem is where did
he exactly come from before GEORGIA. It is like he was dropped out of a
space ship. I have even went to the extend of tracking EDWARD DUKE and his
wife MARGARET WALDROP back to SOUTH CAROLINA (and believe me I know their
ancestors) hoping to find a connection to JAMES SAMUEL CLINTON.
Can anyone help? I am willing to share what I have with anyone of this line
and would love to communicate with other descendants. I know there has got
to be more out there somewhere than just me and my direct cousins that I know
about.
Please help!

Hi
I went to the library today to look for Ezekiel Clinton in the Jillson books.
Ezekiel Clinton DID NOT get his land grants for military service. I looked
thru all three of the Jillson books on KY land grants. I found the two land
grants for Ezkeiel in the chapter KY LAND WARRANTS (1816-1873) In 1816, KY
opened up all vacant land at 100 acres for $20. The land was available to
anyone in KY except aliens.
Ezekiel got his two grants in Hopkins Co - 2 50 acre parcels:
Ezekiel Clinton, 50 acres, Book L, Pg 247, Aug 18, 1821, Hopkins Co. Lick
Creek
Ezekiel Clinton 50 acres Book P-2, pg 174, Jan 1, 1831, Hopkins Co.
Tradewater (River?)
A James Clinton also got 5 (50?) acres - Book M, pg 255, April 17, 1823,
Harlan County on the Cumberland River.
There is a James Clinton listed in the section GRANTS SOUTH OF THE GREEN
RIVER.
James Cl(e)nton, 400 acres ook 27, pg 57, Surveyed Jan 16, 1824, Livingston
Co. west fork Donelson Cr.
James Clinton 32 3/4 acres Book 6 pg 124, March 28, 1806
I copied the list of Clintons; from the INDEX TO REV. WAR SERICE RECORDS.
There is NO Ezekiel listed as serving in the Rev War, nor is there a Daniel.
There are a number of Jameses. but none that are listed as being from the
Carolinas. John served from NC, Nathaniel served from SC There is a John
and a James who served in Cont. Troup with the rest of them serving from NJ,
NY, CT, MC (I don't have the faintest about how complete these Index books
are)
Since Hopkins Co was formed from Christian Co. , I looked at all the tax
lists for Christian Co. KY from 1797-1810. There were no Clintons listed.
There was only one bad section of the film - for the year 1805. It had water
damage and I couldn't read it at all, but the rest of the pages were very
good considering the age. I had my yellow paper and magnifying glass, so
that helped with the faded ones.
Then I went back to look at the Hopkins Co. Tax list beginning in 1807.
Nothing new there. Couldn't read for 1814, and Ezek shows up in 1815. I
think I could see Zachariah listed in 1822, and for sure in 1823 and 24.
Zach was gone by 1825, and, of course, Ezek stayed until he died by 1840
That film is not very good .
Does anyone have a copy of a will for the James Clinton who was supposed to
have been the father of James Jr., Ezekiel, Samuel, Daniel, and Archibald??
I sure would like to see something "official" connecting these men to each
other and to James Clinton. (Dream on). I've heard that he died in 1828,
but I do't know where.
If anyone can add to this, would you please post to the list?? Thanks
Joanne

Dawn, do you know, or does anyone else know, if you can just write to the NC
State Archives and get an actual copy of the marriage bond? Also does
anyone know if other Duplin and Sampson County, NC records - such as wills,
deeds, and so on - can be found at the NC State Archives? Thanks, Pam

North Carolina Marriages to 1825
North Carolina marriages to 1825 contains over 103,000 names. Each entry
includes groom, bride, marriage date, county, and state. Every name is
indexed so you can search for one name, or two names that are linked. The
marriage date is usually the date of marriage as given in the original entry.
However, when no marriage date is given (e.g., the "marriage return" was not
provided to the record keeper), the date of the license is used. In a few
cases, a marriage will be listed twice, but in two different counties. This
most often happened when a couple obtained a license in one county, but were
actually married in another.

Archibald, grandson of Archibald who died in Chester Co. PA got a Rev. War
land grant in Todd Co. KY. But there is an Archibald listed in Garrard and
Franklin Cos. KY over in the central part of the state in 1800 and 1801.
Does anyone know that this is the same Archibald, and that he went first to
Garrard/Franklin before getting his land grant, and then went on west to Todd
Co.??
Has anyone on the list actualy seen land grants for these Clinton men who
were supposed to have been the sons of Archibald Sr.'s son James??
And while, I'm here, does anyone know if the Samuel Clinton listed in the
Abbeville Dist. 1800 census with the headcount: 20100-102100-12 was the
same Samuel who was born ca 1775 and who also got a land grant n Logan Co.
KY??
In case anyone doesn't know,:
James J. . ca 1757 got land grants in Livingston & Harlan Co KY
Daniel b. ca 1759 got a land grant in Criddenden Co. KY
Ezekiel b. ca 1762 got a land grant in Hopkins Co. KY
Archibald b. 1764 got the land grant in Todd Co. KY
Samuel b. ca 1775 got a land grant in Logan Co. KY

I received the message posted by Jane Miscavich at Clinton-L (digest) but it
was routed to me by another because I don't receive the digest version. In
any case, I do appreciate the reply.
I am interested in Charles Clinton for two reasons: 1) The name Clinton is
repeated in my family as a given name. No one knows why and to the best of
my knowledge, I am the first person to attempt to find a reason. 2) Charles
Clinton was deeded a parcel of land (63 acres) in Fayette County by Richard
Waller "Waller's Choice." Charles Clinton owned other land and I believe
there might be some sort of family tie that caused Charles to want to live in
this particular place.
My g.g.grandmother was named Clintonia Bacon Samuel. Her mother was Letitia
Cummins and I think it is the Cummins branch that has potential as the
Clinton connection; i.e. perhaps Clintonia was named for her maternal
grandmothers. Letitia's older brother was named Richard Waller Cummins.
Clintonia's g.son's given name was Joseph Clinton (and ironically there is
another Cummins branch found near Louisville, KY that also had a Joseph
Clinton Cummins. Coincidence? Perhaps.
Letitia Cummins' mother - Elizabeth - at this point has no parents. To the
best of my knowledge, she and husband John Cummins were in Westmoreland Co.
PA in the late 1780s and living in Sumner County, TN by 1790 when John was
commissioned a Lt. in the militia by Gov. Willie Blount. At least three of
their children were born in PA. Two were born in TN. I do not know how to
prove it, but I think that Lt. John Cummins of the Westmoreland Rangers is
the same man as Lt. John Cummins of the TN militia. He was educated. He had
a brother named James whose signature is very similar (Petition to create
Rutherford Co, TN). John died in 1804.
I would very much appreciate copies of materials Jane may have re Charles and
his family and information as to whether the book in question might be
available on LDS film? Thank you.
To Frances Trimble -- This is the information I have on Charles Clinton. It's
excerpted from a book I found at the U.S.Library of Congress. I didn't copy
everything, but I think I got everything that relates to Charles Clinton (and
William and Thomas) of Maryland and Pennsylvania.
"William Clinton . . . bought about 500 acres of land in Paxtang Township on
the Susquehanna river opposite the present site of Harrisburg in 1762.
Harrisburg was founded about 20 years later; at that time the land was in
Lancaster County. When his estate was liquidated in 1766, this land was sold to
James Burd. The estate was administered by his widow Sarah who then resided in
Philadelphia; he was said to have been a blacksmith, a rather profitable trade in
pioneer days. We can thus see that both he and James Burd lost little time in
acquiring some of the new land they had passed over in their military expedition.
In Book O, page 56 of the Frederick, Md. County Registry of deeds we find
this entry: Feb. 7 1771 Joseph Reynolds gave a bill of sale to Charles Clinton
for one bay mare and one copper still for 28 pounds and 18 shillings Pennsylvania
money. Reynolds was a resident of Antietam District, now of Washington County.
In Scharf's History of Western Maryland we find that Charles Clinton became head
of a committee (1775) for Cumberland Hundred (then in Frederick County) to raise
funds to buy arms and amunition which were required by the Maryland Council of
Safety. In Force's American Archives, we find that the Council of Safety
commissioned him Captain of Militia July 27, 1776. He was said to have been from
Skipton or Shipton District; this name is no longer known in that region but it
was undoubtedly in the neighborhood of Cumberland. In the Pennsylvania Archives
6th S. Vol. 5 pages 310 and 320 we find that he had become Captain of the Eighth
Company of Fayette County (Pa.) Militia 1791-1792. He had bought several tracts
of land in Union Township of Fayette County in 1784-1792, and in the deeds he
gave Washingotn County, Md. as his residence. This fact identifies him as the
same man referred to in the records just cited."
I think we are interested in the same man and if you have anything to add to the
info above, I would like to hear it. I will do the same if I find any more
information. I will keep you advised.
Thanks. Jane

ELIZABETH CLINTON married ROBERT JOHNSON GULLY in Hopkins Co. Ky on 16 May
1811. (I had thought perhaps that the date was 1817, but I found my copy of
their original marriage record and 1811 is correct.)
Connecting to Elizabeth - MATTHEWS, ISAAC, 23 Oct. 1819 - Isaac Matthews was
married 31 August 1806 to Toppenas. In HOPKINS Co. KY on 23 Oct 1819, Isaac,
in witness of two justices of the peace James Edmiston and John N.
Cunningham, questioned his neighbors, this to be used as evidence against
Toppenas, who was charged by her husband as living in adultery with Robert
Johnson Gully, also a neighbor. The neighbors who were questioned were Edward
Baldwin, Henry Bishop, Ann Simes, John Matthews, and Ezekiel Clinton, all of
whom said they knew, or were told by Toppenas, of the adultrey. Ezekiel
Clinton said that Gully told him that his (Gully's) wife (Elizabeth) would
not drop corn (plant corn) for him and that he had a notion of leaving her.
Statement by Isaac Mathews that he had been a neighbor some 3 or 4 years.
Isaac Mathews got a divorce in Williamson Co. TN in that same year.
At the 1830 census, ELIZABETH CLINTON had 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males
15-20, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 60-70. Is this Elizabeth Gully?
On May 29, 1827, EZEKIEL CLINTON and ELIZABETH GULLY were witnesses to the
will of Starling Sims in Hopkins Co. KY, Will Book 1-2, 1807-1829.
Anybody on the list know WHO ELIZABETH'S PARTENTS WERE??
