Hello List,
I am going on a hunch here, so please bear with me.
My great-grandfather, Clinton ROBINSON, was born in Saratoga, Winona County,
Minnesota in August 1878. According to several family accounts, Clinton is
the illegitimate son of Margaret (Mary Ann) ROBINSON and the son of a
prominent business man, associated with the railroad, who was traveling
through the area. I have no other information on the father, except that he
was entirely unknown to Clinton.
Someone on another list suggested that children were sometimes given surnames
as first names in order to keep the name "alive" (I have a Gould ancestor who
named her son Gould CAMP, for example). CLINTON is not a name that occurs
anywhere else in my family history, as a surname OR first name. This makes me
wonder if the unknown father was a CLINTON.
Is anyone on this list aware of any CLINTONs passing through southeastern
Minnesota in 1877 on railroad business? I don't know which railroad company,
and there were so many at that time I just don't know where to begin. If I
had any clues, I might be able to do some research while I am visiting that
area later this month.
Thank you for reading my message. I look forward to any help or suggestions I
might get from this list.
