Hello,
I am new to the list and thought I would make a post about my Clinton

great grandfather, James P. Clinton, came to America and settled in
Chicago. I have this line on my website at:

Would be interested in any comments or help on the line.

Archibald Clintons sons were:
James Jr. b. ca 1757 got land in grants in Livingstne and Harlan Co. KY
Daniel b. 1759 got land got land grant in Crittenden C. KY
Ezekiel b. ca 1762 got alnd grant in Hopkins Co KY
Archibald b. ca 1764 got land grant in Todd Co KY
Samuel b. 1775 got land grant in Logan Co KY.
I went ot the Christian Co. KY genweb site and I found the 1850 Christian Co.
KY 1850 census on line. And I found:
Archibald Clinton, 48, farmer $1200 b. KY
Isabella E. 48
James A. 18
George W 15
Madison 14
Lucy 11
Nancy 9
This should be the son of Archibald above, son of James Sr. - I would hope.
If someone knows that he is not, please speak up. BG
I noticed that one of these chilrdren was Madison - I haven't seen that one
among the Clintons up until today. Wonder if this child was named for Pres.
James Madison., and if George was named for V.P. George Clinton who served
under Madison. George died in 1812.
But I was also poking around in KY and found a website for the KY Land
Office. The URL is:
www.sos.state.ky.us/ADMIN/LANDOFFI/landoff.htm
And guess who has the PATENT RECORDS for Sumner, Smith, Robertson, Macon,
Montgomery, Stewart, Jackson, Claiborne, Clay, Fentress, Pickett, Scott and
Campbell Co. TN??? KENTUCKY HAS THEM!!
And Thomas Clinton who was in Davidson, Montgomery, and Stewart Co. TN is one
of the guys I am interested in so maybe I'll find some info on him in the KY
land records..
Just thought I'd toss this out - maybe it will help somebody. Maybe even me.
BG Happy hunting!
Joanne
According to an article "FOOTPRINTS OF RICHARD CLINTON 1741-1795" by Oscar
and Virginia Bizzel and published in the HUCKLEBERRY HISTORIAN (Sampsonm Co.
Hist. Soc.)
Richard Clinton was born in New Hanover Co. ca 1741. Court records indicate
that he most likely was the natural son of John Sampson and that his mother
may have been Rachel Clinton. He supposedly died on 23 January 1795 and he
left no will. He was married to Penelope Kenan.
Their children were:
Ann - called Nancy b. 1763, m. Owen Holmes
Thomas b. 1764 m. Catherine Lanier in Anson Co. NC
Elizabeth b. c.1767 m. David Bunting
Rachel b. c.1769 m. Jacob Rhodes
Arabella b. c. 1771 m. Isaac Lanier
William S. b. c. 1775 m. Sarah Sewell
Owen C. b. c. 1779
Richard D. b. 1780 m. Ferebee Hicks
Mary Eliza b. 1784 m. Alfred Rowland
Thomas was the one that I am particularily interested in was married
Catherine Lanier before 13 Feb 1796 and was living in Anson Co. Nc. He was
married later to Elizabeth (?) in TN?? I have found him on the Montgomery
Co. TN Tax List of 1798. In 1801, he signed a petition to the Gen. Assembly
of TN requesting to divide Montgomery Co. & to leave Clarksville as the Co.
Town name. However - the name THomas Clinton is listed TWICE on this
petition. Would be nice to see the original to see if he signed twice or if
there were TWO Thomas Clinton's there.
I would like to have more info on Thomas Clinton. Does anyone have any info
on this family??
Joanne
Comments from anyone welcome and much appreciated.
The 228 acres mentioned below were located in Davidson Co. TN and were sold
to Landon Carter 22 June 1793.
I was on Ancestry.com and found the following:
ROSTER OF SOLDIERS FROM NORTH CAROLINA IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
Pierce's Register, Vo. X, Pg 241, #421 John Clinton Privt
No. of Acres: 228; Service in months: 30,
Location and who whom deeded and date of warrant within the limits of the
land allotted the officers and soldiers of the Continental Line, by Law,
1783, Oct 14; Jan 7. :ttt Warrant assigned to Green Hill in presence of
McWilliams Thos. Davis.
Pierce's Register, Appendix Pg 618 - 33 John Clinton
So, it looks like he only got 228 acres to begin with - for some reason. But
why does the record say that the warrant was assigned to Green Hill??? He
can't have sold it to Green Hill and he sold it to Landon Carter in 1792 or 3
like the other record said.
Also, I found record of John Clinton marrying Nancy Grisham on Dec 24, 1800
in Orange Co. NC.
And I have a copy of the will of George Grisham of Orange Co. NC, dated 6
August, 1822, giving to his grandsons all of his land to be equally divided.
The grandsons were: one third to George Washington Clinton, one third to
Samuel Harrison Clinton, and one third to John Linnington Clinton. He gave
to his grand dau Sarah Clinton one feather bed and furniture, to grand dau
Elizabeth Clinton one feather bed and furniture. Then later he names his
"four granddaughters: Sarah, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Mary Ann Clinton
So if these grand children are the children of John Clinton and Nancy
Grisham, then this John Clinton can be eliminated as the father of my
Zachariah Clinton - UNLESS - he was married prior to his marriage to Nancy
and had my Zachariah with a first wife. Not impossible, but I'm not that
hopeful.
But maybe this info will help someone on the list
Joanne
Has anyone come across a connection between the Clinton and Flinton lines in
Orange Co., NC?

Currently looking for Jesse Clinton and Rachel Vickers.
This is what I found on the Clintons in Davidson Co. TN this week:
Per: LAND DEED GENEALOGY OF DAVIDSON COUNTY TENNESSEE 1793-1797, VOLUME 2
Book pg. 28, record pg. 160 - LANDON CARTER - Territory of the U.S.and c -
June 22, 1793.
North Carolina No 1611. By and Act for the relief of the officers and
Soldiers of the Continental Line, in considersation of the bravery and zeal
of John Clinton, a private in the said line, granted unto Landon Carter,
assignee of John Clinton, a tract of land containing 228 acres in Davidson
Co. on south Harpeth River, adjoining Stoneland's corner. Surveyed for Landon
Carter Dec 20, 1792 by John Davis, D.S. in consequence of a military Warrant
422, Located Dec 1792, Dated Feb. 23, 1793.
I have a copy of the deed where John Clinton sold this land in 1793.
John Hanks SR was in Davidson Co. TN at least from Nov. 18, 1800 when he
signed as testator on a bill of sale until April 1805 when he bought goods
from the estate of Greenberry Cox. John Hanks JR who married Charity (ours)
was his son. He also had son Thomas Hanks in Davidson Co. becuase he sold
him a couple of horses and other things in 1801 and 1803.
James Clinton was also in Davidson Co. TN on Aug 17, 1816, because he
purchased goods from the estate of Robert Edmondson, dec'd. He must have
been making the garage sales that week 'cause on Aug 23, 1816, he bought
goods from the estate of Edmond Collingsworth dec'd. and then before Nov 20,
1816, James Clinton and Henry ClAnton bought goods from another estate.
Then on Feb 20,1817 - will of Rutha Turbeville dec'd of Davidson Co., to "my
grand daughter, Rutha Clinton, daughter of David Clinton one featherbed"
Witnessed by Richard Scruggs and David CLANTON. Jan term 1817
Settlement of estate of Fountain H. Gaines, dec'd, R. Clinton listed "to wit"
with others. Aug 23, 1817.
Inventory of the estate of John O. Ewing, dec'd, Sept 29, 1826 - long list of
names including those of Richard Clinton and Richard Hanks.
Inventory of estate of John Haywood, dec'd: persons listed to wit: David
Clinton, James Clinton, John Hanks dated June 16, 1827
I also found in the Davidson Co. Deed Index the following:
Grantee: David Clinton, Grantor Lewis Banton, date Mar 18, 1815, files May
2, 1816, Vo. L. pg 160, 100 acres on Mill Creek
And Grantee, Drury Clinton, Grantor Henry Hyde, date of instrument July 18,
1816, date filed Aug 12, 1816, Vol. L. pg 279, five acres - Location S.A.
Davidson
There were also a Richard Drury and a John Drury listed in the Davidson Co.
TN Wills and Inventories 1816-1830 Vol 2. and I wonder if they are in any way
connected to Drury Clinton above. That's such an unusual name - maybe Drury
Clinton's mother was a Drury.. I have seen the name spelled Drewery.
There was also a Thomas Clinton in Davidson Co. along with a Thomas Truman.
They were also buying goods from an estate.
These records place more than one line of Clintons in Davidson Co. TN at
the same time my Hanks and Gatlins were there. I'll see what else I can
find. Any comments welcome.
