Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Glad to have you aboard. Actually we have a few more now, but this so
far is a low volume list and I think that is fine. I hope you'll look
at the archives, there is another Clingan web group and it is referenced
there, but let me know if you have any problems. We also have some great
resources referenced in the archives. There is also a Clingan researcher
in Australia who is not on this list. I saw his name on rootsweb and I
have been meaning to drop him a note and invite him to join. Now I have
a another reason to do this, what with your being in Australia. No need
to plead guilty to lurking on this list, I fail to see why people
complain about lurkers. Still waters run shallow, ha ha, that is just
my little joke. But I have unsubscribed from lists where they made a big
deal of everyone contributing regularly. It only makes sense to me that
you are quiet if you have nothing to contribute. All that aside it was
great to get your introductory note. And can I say, since I am from
Atlanta Georgia, that I am envious of the pre Olympic festivites you are
probably sharing in right now. Sharing in the Olympics was really
glorious. More soon, Marsha

Marsha, thanks for your welcome message of 25 Mar and surprised to see
that there is only 11 subscribers.
Hi subscribers, my name is Kay Sturgeon and live in Townsville, Far
North Queensland, Australia, and I plead guilty to lurking for a month
or so.
My interests are the same as Ian Clingan, Inverness, SCOTLAND. This is
the Clingan Family of Kirkpatrick-Durham KKD (John CLINGAN & Janet
WILSON) my husbands lineage is from his daughter Catherine married Alex
FRASER and Thomas CLINGAN married Agnes BENNETT their children (cousins)
marrying in Australia.
Many thanks,
Kay .
Dear Clingen-L folks, I have permission to cross post this note from the
Scotch-Irish list. It gracefully reminds us, of the basic realities upon
which our adventures in genealogy are based. Take care, Marsha

It's useful for all of us
(including the political leaders of France and Japan) to keep in mind
that there's no such thing as "pure" blood strains. All we have to do
is go back in time far enough to find unlimited versions of "mixing" as
many thousands of human groups, not to mention individuals, moved from
one place to another. The 3/23 issue of NATURE discusses the finding
that the genetics of Western Ireland is *very* close to that of Northern
Spain and the Basques (which I suppose would explain the prevalence of
black hair among many Irish). In his wonderful book "The Scotch-Irish; a
Social History", Leyburn tallies the "many ancestral strains" of the
Lowland Scots: Stone Age aborigines, the Gaels (Celtic), the Britons
(Celtic), the Romans, Angles, Saxons, the Scots (Celtic via Ireland),
Norse, Norman, Flemish (transplanted traders), and English.
None of this detracts from the interest and pride of you, me, and
everyone else on this list, in being Scotch-Irish, but to some extent
identity is defined by how limited a "box" we are going to
decide to belong to.
Doug
Beth, Don't you have folks from around Rhode Island?
That SSDI is a great resource. It sounds like there are other SSDIs but
this is the one I know:

Do you think this is the best SSDI?

Hi, all -
I copied this obituary from the 'Providence (RI) Journal' (which I found
using their on-line archives search engine) because of the mention of the
name CLINGEN.... have no idea how she might be related, if at all:
Thursday, March 21, 1985
"Myrtle E. MacPherson, 86
Longport, NJ - a former 50 year resident of Cranston, RI, who had lived in
Gospel Hill Home here since 1980, died Monday (3/18/85).
She was born in Lansdowne, Nova Scotia, a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs.
Ernest MacPherson. A graduate of the Roger Williams General Hospital School
of Nursing, Miss MacPherson was a private duty nurse in RI for many years.
She was a member of the Buttonwoods Gospel Chapel, Warwick. She leaves a
sister, MILDRED CLINGEN of Sarasota, N.Y.
Her funeral service and burial will be held tomorrow in Longport."
I looked up Mildred Clingen in the Social Security Death index, and found
this info:
Mildred Clingen, b. Dec. 9, 1895, d. Dec., 1986.
Anyone recognize this CLINGEN? I was thinking she might be related to
Charlie Clingen, but his e-mail address I have for him is no longer valid....
