Who are William M. CLINE's parents/siblings?
William M. CLINE m Nancy NORMAN on 3 May 1838 in Belmont Co, OH. He lived
and raised his family in Pease Twp, Belmont Co, and died in Belmont Co, OH
on 26 Mar 1891. He was a shoemaker. His wife Nancy d 21 Dec 1890,
predeceasing him by 3 months; she was b in OH. He had 13 children, the first 11
were girls!
ALL census data (1850/60/70/80) indicates he was b in PA ca 1817. HOWEVER
he enlisted in the Civil War on 24 Mar 1864, stating he was 43 1/2 years
old (b ca Sep 1820) and he was b in Indiana Co, PA; on a separate enlistment
form on the same day he is listed as 40 years old (b ca 1824). His decla
ration for an invalid Army pension in 1865 stated he was 45 (b 1820). His
death record shows at death in Mar 1891 he was 71y 3 m (Dec 1819). I am
inclined to believe the census data, which is consistent to his age, and believe
that he may have misrepresented his age at enlistment.
To date I have been unable to find a family for him, despite numerous
CLINEs in the general vicinity (neighboring counties in particular). I have no
idea when he arrived in OH -- did he come as a child, or as a single man
seeking his fortune? Below are potential family members, but I have yet to
identify a connection, IF there is one. Can anyone help?
a. Could either/both of these people be siblings? William m 1838, and
Belmont Co marriage records show these other CLINE marriages in that same
approximate time:
-- Isaac CLINE (of Somerset Twp) married to Mary Mossburgh on 9 Jul 1835
-- Margaret CLINE married to Reuben T. Ferrell on 25 Feb 1836. Different
sources suggest that Margaret is either the dau of Michael CLINE (age
40-50 in 1830; not in 1840 census) or William CLINE (allegedly in 1840 census),
both from Kirkwood Twp, Belmont Co. Solely based on name, either could be
a father to my William M(ichael?) Cline, and William's first dau is named
Margaret.
b. I have been unable to find a CLINE family in Indiana Co, PA where he
could fit, but another researcher said Indiana was once part of Westmoreland
Co, and he may be from there.
-- Interestingly the 1820 census shows either a William or John CLINE in
Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co (Heritage Quest "interprets" the handwriting
as Wm; I can see a possible Jno). A Genforum entry suggests the name is
William, he's married to Elizabeth, and they have a son b 1824 named
Lewis/Louis M b Greensburg, Westmoreland Co. Note the middle initial M; did they
have had a son William M b 1817-1820? My William's third dau is Elizabeth.
-- Hempfield, Westmoreland Co, PA is on the "National Road" (now I-40)
that runs through Belmont Co, OH so IF he was from the Hempfield CLINEs,
travel to Belmont Co would have been a direct line.
c. William had two sons, William W. and David M. The first son was named
for his father, but does W signify anything? It doesn't fit the maternal
side of the family (Norman/Moody). The second son has the M middle
initial, but who might David be named for (if anyone). Nancy Norman's father was
Isaac.
All help and suggestions greatly appreciated!
