Thanks for posting the website for the Grainger Co TN
info. That is my Jacob Cline (my ggg grandfather) who
later moved to Putnam Co IN. Also, wasn't Moritz
Cline originally from the Alsace region which is now
part of France?

I am very interested in the Cline family in TN around 1785. I understand
they came from SC and NC to get there and then later showed up in GA. There
was a marriage in Rhea County, both born in TN around 1785-90; then the other
day I found this site that lists a Jacob CLINE in it. Acts of Tennessee 1796
- 1830 : C (Pt. 4) containing the following: 'Cline Jacob 1815 20
188 Rutledge commissioner' I have learned that Rutledge is in Grainger
Co. TN.
I have not been all the way through it because it contains so much but I
thought you might want to see it. The one above is the page with his name on
it (1749) but the main site is EARLY NC - TN - SC- RECORDS - MILITARY-
MARRIAGES and you may find even more places. It is a big site.
My personal concern is one John CLINE, b. abt. 1785, TN, who married Nancy
Jane VICKERY/VICKORY, b. abt. 1790, TN. I am very interested in what you may
have leading up to 1790 in TN. Their marriage in Rhea County I found and I
think he was on the tax list of 1812, but that is not back far enough.

hello all..
let me, since i beleive i started this conversation, send a word of
caution about
the spelling of names... first ... many of our ancestors couldn't read
and write so
we can assume they also couldn't spell very well..
when they got to this continent the spelling of the name spoken by our
ancestors was probably written by an official ( of some other
nationality) so many of the names we have inherited are english
variations of german or french or dutch
in my family line we have three different spellings ( some people
changed the spelling of their names for any one of several reasons
so don't put too much importance on specific spellings of any name
jay
Hello,
That is not necessarily true as my lineage of CLINE was KLEINE as Moritz
KLEINE/KLEIN came into America in 1749 and as his generation migrated into
North Carolina and then into TN., the spelling of the name was changed to
CLINE.
And as per what I am finding Moritz's father was a DEKLEIN---- FRENCH!
Then the family dropped the DE -- going into Germany, so as to NOT be
recognized as being protestant and then not to be persecuted because of
religious beliefs.
I would like to hear more feedback from this. Anyone else have something to
say on this???

Jerome,
My Kleine line comes from the Hanover area of Germany. I believe Kline,
Cline and Clyne are of Engilish origin. While Kleine and Klein are of
German origin. In the German language both of these mean small or little.
Herman Kleine
To Barbara Cline Hutchinson,
I am a Cline stuck in Ohio possibly WV. Although I am familier with the other spellings the Deklein was new to me. Thanks!! If I ever get back that far I will keep this in mind.
