there were 852 able-bodied men in the county divided into 15 militia

Fellow listers,
Here’s an appeal to all of you to pull out the copies of the SSAN
application forms you already have filed away in your "stuff" and post them
at Rootsweb.
I just did it for the ones I have and it’s really easy. :O)
1. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/
2. Scroll down the home page to Social Security Death Index and click on it.
3. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search
engine.
4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add
Post-Em" link.
5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the
information just like it’s printed on the form you have in your hands!
6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form,
so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don’t
have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program
includes it.
Since the cost of these forms will be increasing substantially next week, it
would be good if EVERYONE put out the information they already have. Then
whoever else is searching for that same person won’t be required to pay the
new price for the same form you have in your files. And vice-versa! If we
all "plant seed," we’ll all get the crop! And thank Goodness for Rootsweb
providing this service to all of us for FREE!
Be well & God bless,

Hi,
I found an interesting bit about the Nicholites that ties into the PEGG line:
Excerpts: The Nicholite movement was founded by Joseph Nichols in 1760; he lived in DE, near the MD border; not a religious person; spent most of his time partying w/friends. During an "escapade" w/friends, one of his best friends got sick & died. This shook him up and he began preaching to friends about the light he had come to believe shown in the understanding of man and to obedience to an "Inward Director." The are he and his friends lived in was heavily populated by Quakers. The Nicholite movement was influenced by/similar to Quakerism. Nicholites may have taken a stand against slavery before Quakers did. Nicholites didn't believe in paid ministers; all marriages/births/deaths were to be recorded; marriages performed same manner as Quakers; marriage to non-Nicholite would cause the person to be disowned from the mtg; didn't believe in fighting; suffered because of this during the Rev. War. Nicholites were referred to by some as "New Quakers."
One difference: Quakers believed in education and operated schools; Nicholites saw education as evil and seldom taught their children beyond the ability to read/write. The number of Nicholites who "made their mark" instead of signing their names proves most lacked even this basic education.
Nicholites wore plain clothing, undyed cloth, no black leather or bootblack on their shoes; simple furniture; no flowers in their gardens; traveled mostly by foot.
Joseph Nichols d. 12/1770; survived by wife Mary who md. Levin Charles and migrated to Guilford Co. w/ son (Isaac) and a dau. Nichols' followers didn't scatter, but in 12/1774 organized themselves into Monthly mtg. and met @ home of James Harriss; he assumed the role of leadership for them. By 1775 the Nicholites had 3 mtg houses in the borderland of MD & DE.
In 1770 there was a migration of folks to Deep River section of Guilford Co.; they were Nicholites. The recent history of Deep River township written by Will PEGG doesn't mention the PEGGs as being Nicholites. Richard Mendenhall married Mary PEGG, d/o Valentine PEGG, one of the original Nicholite emigrants of the area. Other prominent Nicholite families in the area were Chipmans, Charleses, Horneys, Jos. Standley & Wheelers.

Richard Mendenhall (1778-1851) a member of Deep River Mtg in Guilford Co., NC. M. Mary PEGG, d/o Valentine & Mary PEGG, in 1812. He was member of NC State Legislature and the NC Yearly Meeting's Mtg. for Sufferings; home, Mendenhall Inn, near Jamestown, preserved today.
Valentine PEGG (1744-1828) s/o Wm. & Margaret PEGG. b. 1744 in NC; joined Deep River Friends Mtg. in Guilford Co. by req. in 1805; m. Mary (Mills) Cook (1750-1820), wid/o Thos. Cook, in 1806; d/o John & Sarah Mills. They transf. to Whitewater MM in Wayne Co., IN 1812; Valentine d. in 1828; bur. Whitewater Burying Ground.

I'm wondering if that's why we haven't found some of the documentation for this family line ... it got "lost" from the Quaker records??? just a thought!

I just thought I would spread the word that the fees for getting a copy of a Social Security Application are going up drastically on 1 July 2001. If you apply before then you will be charged the old amount which is now $7 if you know the number, and $16.50 if you do not.
The new fees are posted at:
http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm
It appears that the increases are more than substantial, they are gigantic.
This means that the time for procrastination is over.
The address you need to send them to is:

Rick,
Curious as to where you found all the 1880 Clinard census info. Did you
get the names from the new LDS indexes or did you do it the hard way?
If you do have the indexes, how do you like them? I've got mine on
order, but have been told it may be weeks/months before they ship.
Have a great day!

Can anyone help me identify who this person was? Sally Clinard's will was
recorded in Book 3 page 108 in Davidson County, NC, dated 2/9/1856, and was
probated 3/30/1874. A daughter named Katherine Lindsey was mentioned and
Sally's "worthy friend" Hugh Lindsey was named as executor. It may help to
know that the will also identified 77 acres of land bordering on Irving
Harrison Mottsinger, Adam Wyre, and Eliza J. Lindsay's boundaries.
To whom was she married? Who were her parents and her children? Any help
placing this Sally Clinard in the right family in my database is
appreciated.
