Did any of your Clifton 's settle in Ohio and then in Michigan? My William
Clifton first settled in Ohio, married a woman by the name of Abigail Ann
Locke in 1837, and moved to Michigan in 1845 and died as a result of being
crushed by a building in 1848.
Thanks,

Greetings all.
My great grandfather, Charles Wesley Clifton, made some effort to track the
family line to Kentucky, where I picked it up and fleshed it out to present
day. We come down through the Burdette and Housan Clifton lines, which is
well researched by others. I cannot attest to the royal connection.

Hi John et al, I have suddenly been copied on the emails. I am 47 and have
been following my Clifton heritage for many years. It's good to know there
are so many of us and so much history behind the family name!
I don't know if you already have this but here's is an interesting website I
have held onto about the Noble Clifton Family in England.:
http://www.proweb.co.uk/~roymat/cliftonf/cliftonf.html
To Jack, where 'bouts are you in Florida? I live in Dunedin, near
Clearwater.
A little history about my branch - My father, Ellis E. Clifton was born in
Douglas Georgia in 1927. He had 2 brothers Carl and Boots. They have all
passed on now, my father about 2 years ago. All 3 were WWII Veterans. I now
live in Dunedin, FL. My gr.,gr.,gr grandfather was Robert Selathial Clifton
who lived in south Georgia as a Baptist Minister and farmer and preached
around south Georgia and north Florida. He had 14 children. The last of
which was Henry CLifton who died around the 1950's or 60's.(I think).
Take care all!

Burl Clifton 28 Jan 1842
James Kirby Clifton 1845
Emily Caroline Clifton 28 Oct 1848
Mary Ann Clifton 18 Aug 1851
Any information on this family? Will be happy to share info I have.
I am so happy to see so much activity on this newsletter. I thought that I would put my Clifton line out here and see if it rings a bell with anyone.
My ggg grandfather was William Clifton, born about 1775, but I don't know where, or who his parents were. He first appears in the records when he married Peggy Long in 1800 in Augusta County, VA.
I think that William was related to Thomas Clifton, also of Augusta Co., who married Betsy Caul in Augusta in 1789 and who was noted as being 'late of Delaware' in an Augusta counrt case of 1789.
Thomas Clifton's daughter Elizabeth married Patrick Murray in neighboring Rockingham County in 1811.William was surety.
William Clifton married second wife Mary Murray in Rockingham in 1813. I have documents that show the Murray family was in Shenandoah County [ just north of Rockingham] ,VA in the 1780's. Other than that, I have found nothing to explain the relationship between the two Clifton men. And I have not found anything to link these Clifton men to the Cliftons of Stafford County, VA. I have no proof, but I feel that William Clifton came from Delaware, too, possibly as a young boy with older with brother Thomas. Does anyone know of Clifton children who left DE about 1788?
If anyone has info about the origins of Thomas and William Clifton, I would enjoy comparing notes and sharing what I have.

Hi my name is Barb Clifton Taylor from Pennsylvania.
My gr.gr. gr. grandfather Edwin/Edward Clifton b. May 1850, immigrates to the US about 1868-1872 ports unknown. And I know nothing about his parents other than they were both English and he was born in England. He married Harriet Rissell in 1873 in Lancaster, PA. And that is how my Clifton Twig began I call it a twig right now because it only consist of Edwin, his son Horace Edward Clifton and family, his son Horace William Clifton and his family, and his son Horace Elmer Clifton and family. A?nd when I say family I mean all Girls no men to carry on the Clifton name.
If anyone has an Edwin in their line that they have no info on possible it could be my grandfather. Please let me know. Thank you all. A very lonely Clifton leaf.

My great great great grandfather was William Clifton who married Mary Polly
Sproles (SprolesSprouls was actually her first married name, not her maiden
name). They were married in 1805 in Belmont County, OH. William dissapears
by 1810 - according to a county history book an article written by his
grandson states that William Clifton b. 1765 (approx.) "came to America from
Cornwall England because he admired the American government. He returned to
England for a visit in 1810 and was never seen or heard from again." This
story doesn't make sense to me but wondner if you have any knowledge of a
William Clifton leaving Cornwall and/or living in Ohio/Pennsylvania or
married to a "Mary" or "Polly". Do you know if there are any books about
these Cornwall Clifton's that may provide some information?
Thank you,
Carolyn

Your John Clifton (b. 25 March 1750) is the same generation as my
Nathan Clifton (22)
b. before 1755, probably DE
m. 1st Mary
Nathan is shown as a land owner in the reconstructed census of 1782
and he and his wife appear
in the 1800 Kent Co. census. The deeds of Sussex and Kent Counties
show that Nathan continued
to purchase hundred of acres of land in addition to “Boyce’s
Adventure” and “Addition to Boyce’s
Adventure,” which he had inherited from his father, Thomas Sr. and
land purchased from his
brothers. His land lay on both sides of the border between Kent and
Sussex Counties, just east of the Maryland border along the road from
Marshyhope Bridge to Milford. His will, signed 13 June 1817, was
probated 6 April 1818. His date of death is noted on the back of the
will. (Delaware Probate, Vol. A9, p. 147
m. 2nd
d. 14 March 1818, Kent Co., DE
Nathan was the son of
Thomas Clifton (Sr.) (22)
b. before 1709, probably Dorchester Co., MD, when he received a legacy
by will of Thomas Brummal. When the border between Maryland and
Delaware was shifted to the west, most of the land that had belonged to
his father, Jonathan, became part of Delaware. Thomas acquired other
properties including “Addition to Boyce’s Adventure.”
m. wife’s name, unknown; His will listed 13 children
d. 2 November 1785 (probate), Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co. DE
Thomas Sr.’s will listed 13 children in order of birth; sons followed
by daughters:
Richard; Thomas Jr. (b. before 1709-1796/7 Kent DE); Ezekiel; Daniel; Fredrick,
Matthew; Nathan (b. before 1755); Clement (or Clemment); Betty (m. Burns or
Burris); Ann (m. Anderson); Mary (m. Mills); Benitha (m Morgan);
Phebe (m. Cole)
no John
However the will of Thomas Jr. (d. 1797) lists eleven children, all
born in Delaware.
Daniel, Mary, Perthenia, Nathaniel, Sarah, John, Bernitha, Anne,
Thomas (1782/3-1857), Levica, James.
Could this be your John?
Going back, My line descends from Thomas Clifton
ca 1620, England
m. Jane Evans, 1650s, Barbados, West Indies
d. probably Dorchester County, MD
This Thomas probably came to Barbados as an indentured servant and
married the bosses daughter. We have the Evans property record in Barbados.
Probably due to overcrowding, Thomas and Jane sailed with Henry
Vassall and a group of settlers to the west bank of the Lower Cape
Fear estuary in North Carolina. When
the colony failed in 1657, he and his family are believed to have
followed Vassall to Maryland, probably Dorchester County, where
Thomas, Jane and their children settled, farmed, and died (burial
place unknown)
If this is your line I can provide you with more information and let
you know there is
an annual Clifton Reunion in Indiana which might be of interest.
best,
Philip Sonnichsen
Sacramento, CA
Nathan was one of thirteen children of Thomas and ___________ Clifton and their
children and the will of Thomas listed 13 children in order of birth;
sons followed by daughters: Richard; Thomas Jr. (b. before 1709-1796/7
Kent DE); Ezekiel; Daniel; Fredrick,
Matthew; Nathan (b. before 1755); Clement (or Clemment); Betty (m. Burns or
Burris); Ann (m. Anderson); Mary (m. Mills); Benitha (m Morgan);
Phebe (m. Cole)
Note: In her
research, Ruth Clifton has determined that Thomas Clifton Jr. was an
adult land owner before 1783. At his death in 1797, his will and probate papers
listed the following 11 children, all born in Delaware. Daniel, Mary,
Perthenia,
Nathaniel, Sarah, John, Bernitha, Anne, Thomas (1782/3-1857), Levica, James.
This younger Thomas (b. 1782/3) was probably the father of Nancy Clifton who
married John Clifton in Ross County, Ohio. Ruth Clifton adds that “this Thomas
was a nephew of Nathan and not his brother; his father Thomas Clifton Jr. and
Nathan were brothers, and their grandchildren, Nancy and John respectively,
would have been second cousins. Julia A. Clifton (1858-1910), seventh daughter
and 11th child of Nathan Polly (Smith) Clifton married John Wesley
Clifton (1841-
1921), the son of Thomas Clifton. They were, therefore, first cousins, once-
removed (Thomas III being a nephew of his wife’s father Nathan Clifton).

Hi ! I am descended from the Birmingham ,UK, Cliftons ..but that
particular line has died out in the UK . However , my uncle , also named David
Clifton, emigrated to Melbourne ,Australia after the first world war and
his family has proliferated through his two sons Ron ( still living at about
91 years of age), and Graham now deceased My name is Albert Ronald
Clifton ( after my mother's maiden name) Westwood ,,,and my Clifton
predecessors were '"boat people" who, from about the 1700's, transported goods by
barge up and down the River Severn in the Midlands of England to the then
growing industrial capital of the country, Birmingham. Good luck with
your searching. 'Bert

Bonnie,
Does the given name Sciron appear among any of John Clifton's descendants?
A Sciron Clifton (born Delaware about 1820) married Olive Bennett about
1849. They were living in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1850s. Sciron workded as
a mate on steamboats and died in a fall from a steamboat in 1862.
