Hi John,
All I can say is that my memory malfunctioned(again<g>). You are right...the date of March 1838 is all I have; I just got John Clifton confused with my Gg grandfather Coats, who was b. in 1833. My goof.
By the way, after I finished getting off my inaccurate message, I decided to start prowling around the IGI(despite its deficiencies)and see what else popped up. I did a search for Augustin Clifton and found:
Augustin Clifton, christened 5 May 1633, Lincolnshire, England, and who married on 3 May 1664 a Jane Cooke at Grantham, Lincolnshire.
Also, it would appear(if the IGI is correct)that this Augustin was the son of a Wm Clifton christened 21 Nov 1602 at Somerby-by-Grantham, Lincolnshire, and he, in turn, was the son of a John Clifton(no details avail.).
Have nothing to connect these Cliftons with Jonathan in the US as there are obviously quite a few years to span there, however, the name Augustin can't be construed as a common first name, and for it to appear like this makes me wonder even more where Jonathan Clifton originated.
I figured that you would pick up on this from the list, so I was "expecting your call", so to speak<g>. Perhaps we will unravel this mess yet.
Regards,
Larry

Hello Larry. Don't recall seeing piece of detective work on Austin Clifton before. Must be our Austin. I hope one of our fellow Jonathan Clifton researchers can use this to crack the mysterious Jonathan.
I had a question for you. I had the info that John Clifton(Austin's son) was born in March 1838(vs 1833), but I can't remember where I got that date. Can you clarify this for me? Thanks and good to see that someone is still "chasing down" Jonathan. John McMenamin(Napa, CA).

For those searching for information relating to the descendants of Jonathan Clifton, whose son, "Austin" was b. in Amherst Co. VA in 1798, I may have something new to offer(well, to me it was new<g>).
Using the VA state lib searchable archives, I found a land grant for "Augustin Clifton" for 40 acres in Patrick Co. VA(grant dated 10 Oct 1830). My Gg grandfather, John Clifton, Austin's son, was born in Patrick Co. in 1833. It would be my conclusion that our Austin is identical with this Augustin Clifton, which may help us in finding more about his father, Jonathan(about which almost nothing seems to be known).
If I am behind the power curve here and this is old data, please let me know(gently, please).
