Jacob CLIFTON b: 1792 Lincoln Co., NC
Son of David CLIFTON and Lucy HONEYCUTT
>From court records:
Oct 1810
Ordered that Jacob CLIFTON, an orphan child of David CLIFTON,
dec'd., be bound unto Isaac WILLS for 3 years, he being about
18 years old, to learn the art & mystery of a Tanner; said Isaac
is to give him a free suit of clothes when of age.
Jacob married Elizabeth LOVESEY 11 Feb 1819 in Lincoln Co., NC
He removed to Perry Co., Missouri about 1830 where he appears on the 1836
Poll Tax Book with his brothers, Samuel & Franklin CLIFTON.
Evidently returned to Lincoln County, as he marries
Susan BRADSHAW 21 Mar 1838...unless this is a different Jacob!
Anything familiar here to anyone?
Thank you,
Dianna German Anderson
In my Clifton line, there were three Clifton children born in Vermilion
Co, IL:
Sarah Jane Clifton, b. 1844
George Henry Clifton, b. 1846
Elizabeth Clifton, b. 1848
Their parents were Charles (1820, OH) and Hannah (1822, VA) Clifton. By
1856, the family had moved on to NE. Does anyone connect to this line?

My Delaware Clifton family is:
Elizabeth Clifton, b. 1815, d. 19 Mar 1875, married George Pratt 12 Apr
1832. Elizabeth's parents were Mathias Clifton and Asenath Killen. She
may also have had a sister Cecelia. I found George, Elizabeth and
family in the 1850 census in Delaware, but have no other info until
their son, William Mathias Pratt turns up alone in Doniphan County, KS
in 1870.
Is anyone else working on this family? Ardie
Hi All, In my travels on the net, I found these tid-bits, any added info
appreciated:
1. There was a probate for a William Clifton in Macoupin Co., IL but no
date. Only before 1881. John S. Hart admin.
2. There was a Clifton Heights Presbyterian Church in Macoupin.
3. Alfred Clifton age 24 advertized for a wife 26 May 1858 Carlinville -
Macoupin Co., IL .
4. 1850 Scott Co census (not too far from Macoupin Co - 30 miles
maybe) -had:
John Clifton 40 DE - farmer
Nancy 41 DE
Mary 21 OH
Isabella - 17 IN - from here down.
James 13
Nancy 14
John 9
Briana 7
Sarah E. 5
Ellen 2
Looks like the 9 year old John was the one who went to army Civil War.
5. I found some Cliftons in Gallatin Co - but they were from TN. (I'm
looking for DE, OH & IL)
6. John W. Clifton m. Julia Littleton in Christian Co. 1871 - (maybe 10-15
miles from Macoupin). This could be one of mine.
7. 1850 Mid Fork River, El Dorado Co., CA had a Benjamin Clifton.
Wondering if mine really did go to gold fields!

Hi all, Benjamin Clifton is still a huge mystery - but have managed to get
bits and pieces. I know now Benjamin was b. in DE around 1816. He married
#1 Mary Glenn 1836 in Steubenville, OH. I have not found any children for
them, but have a Nottingham b. 1835/36 loose end. #2 Lydia Elizabeth Seaton
(Elizabeth Lydia) 1842.
I believe Benjamin's siblings were: Theodore b. 1803 DE m. Margaret Harlan
1836 Steubenville, possibly Orlando b. DE 1806, John b. DE around 1817 m.
1837 Agnes McCullough & sister Lovy b. 1800 DE m. 1819 Arthur Van Kirk.
In 1840 all of these Cliftons were still in OH. Around 1844 Benjamin and
his wife Lydia moved to Macoupin Co., IL. Here also was Lydia's parents,
John & Lydia Seaton who also had been living in Steubenville, OH and his
brother George Seaton and wife Ann Starr, also from OH. The Seatons appear
to have been from PA.
In 1848 Benjamin and Lydia returned to Steubenville, then by 1850 census
disappear.
Their children were divided between John Seaton (still in IL) and Solomon
Risdon in Steubenville. (John's wife, Lydia, may have been a Risdon).
Solomon's wife, Elizabeth b. DE may have been Messick. They married in PA.
Left in OH were William A. Clifton b. 1843/44 m. Hattie Gill & Minnie Gamble
& David b. 1848. m. Mary Jane Owen. (wondering if Lydia died in childbirth
and Benjamin took off for California gold fields since I believe they were
miners).
In IL were Zerilda b. 1845 m. #1 George Hall #2 James Freeze & John Wesley
b. 1846. Have been unable to find where John W. Clifton went to, think he
was dead by 1924 when William died as not listed in obit, but Zerilda is.
William and David stayed in OH, although they appear to have WV ties.
Zerilda moved first to MO then to Junction City, Geary Co., KS. Any insight
or crumb appreciated. Faith

Clifton Listers:
I have been looking for years for Adelade Clifton, born 9 May 1884, Greensboro, Guilford, North Carolina. She told her daughter that she lists Greensboro as a birthplace but she was really born on Smokey Ridge. She died 8 Mat 1960 in Roll, Yuma, Arizona. She was part Cherokee, her sister, we do not know her name was living on the reservation in North Carolina in the early 1940's.
Thanks everyone for taking time to read this query.

Wyndham Hugh Archibald, A Family History, 1410-1688: The Wyndhams of
Norfolk and Somerset (London, Oxford Univ. Press, 1939.), p. 3,
states:
About 1439, John Wyndham "married Margery, daughter of Sir Robert
Clifton of Buckenham Castle, and widow of Sir Edward Hastings, who,
long before his death, had wasted all his substance in vain efforts to
prove his right to the Barony of Hastings, and so to carry the spurs
at the coronation of Henry V. The alliance was in every way propitious
for John, for through it he became related to the de la Poles, the
Howards, the de Veres, and the Scales; Margery being a cousin of
William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, of John, 1st Howard Duke of
Norfolk, of John, 12th Earl of Oxford, and of Thomas, 7th Baron
Scales."
Margery Clifton is elsewhere in the book stated to be the 2nd cousin
of Elizabeth Clifton, daughter of Constantine Clifton, and wife of Sir
John Knyvet.
Would someone please help me identify this Sir Robert Clifton and his
family? Thank you.
