[CLIFTON-L] James T., Dalta, Hiram, John & "The SPRINGER"
by by way of Carla Karbowski Clifton <cclifton@flash.net>
Greetings Clifton List,
I have posted this before and I want to try it again this year.
I have an old family story and I wonder if anyone else has ever heard
anything similar?
It seems that one of my English CLIFTON ancestors did something or other to
get himself imprisoned in the Tower of London. Well, the story goes that he
escaped by jumping out of the tower and over the Thames River and he survived!
The King was so impressed with the fete that he gave this CLIFTON
a full pardon and bestowed upon him the name of "The Springer"
(because he 'sprang' out of the tower) and also granted him land- holdings
in America (possibly DE).
Has anyone else ever heard this story or anything similar to it?
Also, I am looking for any info at all on anybody that may possible link to
the following:
John CLIFTON (b.3/2/1831)and Susan Adaline HENSLEY (b.10/21/1837),
they were married 7/26/1855 in Vermilion County, IL
Hiram CLIFTON (4/19/1866-2/23/1923)and Susan Catherine STROUD
(1/23/1867-12/27/1954),[she was from from Madison Co., AR]
Dalta CLIFTON married to Albert KRUG (also Unknown BURROUGHS and
Unknown MARTIN)
James Thomas CLIFTON (1/1/1893 Fort Gibson, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma -
9/30/1965, CO). On July 15, 1916 he married Alice Dove SMITH
(9/15/1898-1967) They were both born in OK, but later moved their
family to CO and settled in Boulder. James T., also had a son from
a previous marriage (in CA, I think). I would like to find those
CLIFTONs, too. Also, it seems that 'twins' run in this family.
James sang and played guitar on a radio program and called himself
"Cowboy Jack". He also worked on the railroad most of his life. He
was an experienced "Dowser", and was sought after to find water
and ore. He claimed he had Cherokee Indian heritage and would
often teach us words whenever he could hold our interest. I also
can remember him saying that there was some other sort of Indian
heritage in his background, too...I think it was either Creek or
Blackfoot. I am unable to substantiate these claims at this time,
although his wife, Alice Dove Smith CLIFTON was on the final Dawes
Rolls.
There seems to be an abundance of CLIFTON's around, but I have never found
any that I can fit my family into yet. I think if I could just get past my
John CLIFTON perhaps I could connect with someone, so any little lead or
hint however minor, would be wonderful.
Thanks anyway for reading this and good luck to everyone on their searches.
Peace and Blessings,
Elaine Clifton Tlush
