Greetings Clifton List,
I have an old family tale and I wonder if anyone else has ever heard
anything similar?
It seems that one of my English CLIFTON ancestors did something or other to
get himself imprisoned in the Tower of London. Well, the story goes that
he escaped by jumping out of the tower and over the Thames River and he
survived!
The Monarch of the time was so impressed with the fete that he gave this
CLIFTON a full pardon and bestowed upon him the name of "The Springer"
(because he 'sprang' out of the tower, I guess); and also granted him vast
land-holdings in the new world (I want to say in Delaware, but I am not
sure exactly where).
Has anyone else ever heard this story or anything close to it?
Also, I am searching for information on the following CLIFTONs:
John CLIFTON,(born 3/2/1831)and Susan HENSLEY (born 10/21/1837)
they were married 7/26/1855 in Vermilion County, IL
they had a least one son:
Hiram CLIFTON (b. 4/19/1866 - d. 2/23/1923)
he married:
Susan Catherine STRAND or STROUD (B. 1/23/1867 - d. 12/27/1954)
they had two children that I know of:
Dalta CLIFTON and
James Thomas CLIFTON (b. 1/1/1893 in Fort Gibson, Muskogee Co.,Oklahoma)
(d. 9/30/1965 in Colorado)
James Thomas CLIFTON was my grandfather, but I can find absolutely no
records of his father, Hiram; or his grandfather, John.
Does anyone recognize any of these names? I also think there was the name
"MORGAN" in there somewhere, (perhaps the parents of Susan HENSLEY, but I
am not sure). Also, my grandfather claimed some Native American heritage
from someone. (Cherokee and something else).
Thanks for any leads or hints that anyone might have.
Peace and Blessings,
Elaine Clifton Tlush

You have a wonderful web page. I am wondering if you might be able to help me
with my Clifton line.
My grandfatherwas William Ganaway Clifton b.March 17, 1875 in Pontotoc
County, Mississippi, d. May 11, 1956 in Birmingham, Alabama married Willie
Aretta Sanford daughter of John Rufus Sanford and Jeneshua Emma
Todd/Strickland.
William Ganaway's parents were William Jasper Clifton and
Mary Malissie Todd/Strickland/Osborn. William Jasper's parents were John
Wesley/Westley Clifton and Nancy Freeman
daughter of David Freeman and Sarah Davis.
My maternal grandparents were first cousins, or so it has been stated all
through my lifetime. My two maternal great grandmothers were alleged to have
been sisters. Four of the grandchildren of these alleged sisters, including
my mother all state that their maiden name was Todd. The only records I can
find
are marriage records at the Fayette County, Alabama Courthouse that showsa
Mary M. Strickland to have married an M. O. Osborn/Osburn October 4, 1866,
then Malissie Osborn/Osburn marrying William Jasper Clifton. The other sister
listed as Jeneshua E. Strickland is shown to have married John Rufus Sanford
March 1, 1874.
None of the grandchildren can furnish any information what-so-ever about any
of their "Todd" relatives except that it was thought that the sisters (my
greatgrandmothers) had two cousins named John and Lee Todd.
I have been unable to learn anything of Malissie and Emma as they were
called. No one seems to know where they came from, except one great grandson
who thought someone had told him at one time
that they came from Georgia. I have checked census reports for Alabama,
Georgia and a few of the other southern states for the years 1850 and 1860
without success. The reason I checked
only these two years is because Malissie was born in 1845 and Emma was born
in 1855.
None of the family has knowledge of any Stricklands in the family. How did
they obtain the Strickland surname???
I know that this is quite lengthy and I apologize for same; however, the only
way I believe I might be fortunate enough some day to receive some answers,is
to try and furnish all that I know.
Thank you for listening (reading) this anyhow and if you can help I'll be
forever greatful to you.
Dennis Gurley
I apologize for asking this question again, but I don't see anyone on
these ROOTSWEB sites using JUNOWEB as a provider/e-mail address.
Is anyone accessing the internet through JUNOWEB? If so, are you happy
and satisfied with it? I'm still debating as to whether to signup for
their web services. Thanks, John(Napa, CA).

Hi, fellow Cliftons and "associates",
I, too, am interested in Julie's book, if it becomes available to
interested parties. I am a far
distant relative, too. I hope to hear more about Julie's book and other
Cliftons from DE, OH,
IL, NE.

I share Bob's interest in your book. Is it a "for profit" or one aimed
mostly at "cousins" available at the cost or printing? Will it be on the
Clifton line (I presume) and from what era? I am sure all of the cousins
would like you to share the answers to the list.
I believe we share Clifton-Brent-Porter lines that went into KY, IN and IL.
Thanks.

Dear Julie,
So good to hear from you. When I read this thread I went back
throught what you had sent to me but couldn't find a connection between
what I had and what Gary was looking for. Will have to add this to my data.
My best,
John
Elizabeth's parents were Robert and Susannah Seymour Brent. Robert was the
son of George Brent and Elizabeth Greene. George was the son of George and
Marianna Peyton Brent (whose daughter, Anne Brent, married James Clifton,
uncle of the William mentioned in the earlier post about selling land to
George Washington). This George Brent was the son of Sir Richard Brent and
Elizabeth Reed, who were also the parents of Col. Giles Brent, who married
first "Mary" Princess Kittamaquund, and had a son, another Col. Giles Brent,
and married second to Frances Whitgreaves. This first Col. Giles was the
Lt. Gov. of VA. The son, Col. Giles Brent, married Mary Brent, daughter of
George & Marianna Peyton Brent, and sister to Anne Brent Clifton.
Will share more if desired.

Hello Everyone:
Does anyone know the heritage of the WILLIAM CLIFTON (d. 1773) who sold his

George Washington's diaries contain considerable details about the purchase
of CLIFTONS NECK, a parcel of 1806 acres adjoining Mt. Vernon on the Potomic
River. This parcel was originately patented by a GILES BRENT in the 1600's,
but passed on to a daughter, ELIZABETH BRENT, who married her cousin,

Yes, I have a great deal of info on the Cliftons and am am about to finish
getting my book together. I am descended from William's uncle, Thomas. I am
also related to Giles Brent.
Of the immediate family of William, I have the following:
3. William Clifton, who married c. 1730 Elizabeth Brent, daughter of
Robert and Susannah Seymour Brent. Elizabeth was born in Stafford Co., VA
around 1710 (Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105). She died in
Fairfax Co., VA. Her will was written, the last codicil, on March 27, 1773
(Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105), and was proved in May 17,
1773 (Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105), in Fairfax Co., VA
(Stafford Co., VA Will Book C, p. 225, Nov. 26, 1772) (Source: Abstracts of
Deeds, Wills, and Court Order Books of Stafford Co., VA, by Kathrine Cox
Gottschalk). William Clifton had died by October 1771, as his inventory was
recorded in that month (Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105).
There is a deed in Prince William Co., VA, Nov. 25, 1739, from George Brent
of Stafford, Co., VA, Gentlemen, and Catherine his wife, conveying to
William Clifton of Prince William Co., VA, Gentleman, 500 acres in Prince
William Co., VA, part of a tract of land of 1000 acres patented by Giles
Brent in 1654 ((Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105). William and
Elizabeth Brent Clifton had a daughter:
a. Ann Clifton, was born about 1735, probably in Fairfax Co., VA
(Descendants of Col. Giles Brent, p. 121). Around 1760, Ann married Colonel
Thomas Slaughter, of the family of Cheyney Court, Co. Hereford, England
(Descendants of Col. Giles Brent, p. 122). Thomas' will is not found in
Fairfax Co., VA, but he died before his wife, as she calls herself his widow
in her own will. Ann was left 650 acres of land in Stafford Co., VA in her
mother's will. Ann's will was written March 1, 1791, and probated Dec. 18,
1798 in Fairfax Co., VA (Descendants of Col. Giles Brent, p. 121). Ann &
Thomas had the following children:
i. Elizabeth Brent Slaughter, married ____ Hammersley. Their children:
aa. Francis Hammersley
bb. Thomas Hammersley
cc. George Hammersley
dd. Henry Hammersley
ii Eleanor Clifton Slaughter, married ______Reeder. Their children:
aa. Benjamin F. Reeder
bb. Ann Clifton Reeder
William Clifton's parents were Cuthbert Clifton, son of James and Ann Brent
Clifton, married Dorothy Winckley, daughter of William Winckley of Banister
Hall, and William's wife, Isabel Elston, daughter of Richard Elston, of
Higher Brockholes Hall (Brent Genealogy).
Cuthbert's father was James Clifton, the immigrant ancestor of my family,
and his wife, Anne Brent of Lark Stoke, County Gloucester, England, daughter
of George and Marianna Peyton Brent. James and Anne married around 1661.
James returned to his home in England before his death. He was the 5th son
of the Lord of the Manor of Lytham, and as such, was not to be Lord of the
Manor. He and his brother, Thomas, were persecuted, arrested, etc., for
their Catholicism. Thomas was even sent to the Tower of London.
James' parents were Thomas Clifton (Esquire), born c. 1606 in Westby,
Lancashire, England to Sir Cuthbert and Lady Ann Tildesley Clifton. Thomas
was the heir to the Clifton lands, and succeeded his father at the age of 29
(History of Lancashire, Vol. VII, p. ). He was married c. 1624 to Anne
Halsall, daughter and heiress of Sir Cuthbert Halsall, of Halsall and
Clifton, Lancashire, England, who had inherited Clifton, through several
descendants from Cuthbert Clifton of Clifton, who died in 1512, leaving a
daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, who married Sir William Molyneux, of Sefton
(Descendants of Col. Giles Brent et al., p. 105-106). Record DDC1 #924 in
the Lancashire Records Office, Preston, Lancashire, England, viewed by Dr.
Julie Clifton Laughner, 3/25/1997, certifies that Thomas Clifton and Anne
Halsall were married in Halsall Church between 9 and 2 o'clock on November
11, 1618. Thomas Clifton died Dec. 15, 1657. (Descendants of Col. Giles
Brent et al., p. 105, quotes Vol. 2, P. 54 &c., of Burke's Commoners as
saying that Thomas Clifton died in 1634). Anne's will is dated March 30,
1675 (viewed at the Lancashire Records Office, Preston, Lancashire, England,
by Dr. Julie Clifton Laughner, 3/25/1997).
I have 17 more generations back in the Clifton family, and am not sure what
you might be interested in. It appears to me that you might have some
information that would be useful to me, also, as I did not know about
William selling the land to George Washington. Could you tell me more about
that? Do you descend from this family? I would love to hear more about
your connection.

I just thought I'd ask again in case a new ROOTER has joined our list and
may have a clue to our Jonathan Clifton:
Jonathan Clifton, born 1767 and married 6/16/1795 in Campbell Co, VA. He
married Ursley Wood. He died after 1850 in Franklin Co, VA.
I hope someone new will recognize our Jonathan. Thanks, JOHN.

Benjamin has turned into a major mystery - We know he was probably born
around 1820 - census says in MS - He married a Lydia who's name looks like
Menuth, also from MS - However, we are not certain the person who gave the
information was correct. They had William, Zerilda, John and David.
(1840s). Papers show the first 3 as having been born in Nillwood, Macoupin
Co, IL - But, William's papers give him 3 birthplaces including OH, and
Zerilda's papers show IL & OH. We are pretty sure David was born in
Jefferson Co, OH 1848. By 1850 William and David are living with Solomon
Risdon (DE) in Jefferson Co, OH and his wife Elizabeth (PA) - looks like
Risdon was a miner. We have been unable to locate guardianship papers for
them.
We know what happened to William, but not David.
At the same time Zerilda and John are found with John Seaton (KY) and his
wife Lydia (PA) in Macoupin Co - Here we have guardianship papers and both
John and Zerilda inherit $100.00 from John Seaton when he died. John
Seaton's oldest son William became the guardian. We know what happened to
Zerilda, but not John W.
William stayed in Jefferson Co, OH - joined the army in WV during the Civil
War - married twice - had lots of children. Zerilda married a Hall, then a
James B. Freeze, moved to Carroll Co, MO, and eventually Junction City, KS -
she had two daughters.
Any help would be appreciated - we have no clue what happened to Benjamin or
his wife, we don't know where to look next. Faith

Hello cousin Cindy and Gary, Barbara's sight can be found at:
http://members.aol.com/cliftoncuz/index.htm
In a private email I will send both of you a couple of researchers to contact
regarding CLIFTONs in the Wise County TX area. Cindy, I would think that
this Sarah C. CLIFTON buried in Montague Co TX would fit somewhere in our
family but so far I have no clue as to where. The dates are too far off on
the ones that are possibilities. Guess we need to keep looking for a link!

Your Martha Lyon - was she a daughter of William Fant Lyon and Sarah
Grizzle? I have that family listed, but not who she married. I'm not
really the expert on this family. Barbara Guinn and Sheryl Shaw are the
experts. Barbara has the Owen Co, KY website, and Sheryl is related to me
through the same line. My information is at
http://www.myplanet.net/caboling/ and the Owen County site is - opps, I'm
at work and don't have it with me. You can go to http://www.usgenweb.org
and search states, select Kentucky, then select Owen county, I believe.
Help. Somebody else out there have the url? Anyway, she has the Clifton
family there.
I don't know who else is using this list. If Sheryl and Barb are on it,
will you please acknowledge? Thanks a bunch.
Cindy
