According to Revolutionary War pension information they show a John was paid
through 1802, I am assuming this John died the next year. We were provided
with a detailed record of service as follows:
John Clifton, born in Sussex County, Delaware; age 22 [in 1779?]; height 5' 9
3/4", black hair, brown complexion; residence: Sussex County, Delaware.
Private, Captain David Hall's Company, Continental Troops. Enlisted on
January 23, 1776, and in barracks at Lewistown on April 11, 1776.
Private, Captain Cord Hazzard's Company, 1777. He was "wounded in the right
arm at Synepuxon, Maryland" in May 1777.
Private, 8th Company of Foot in the Delaware Regiment commanded by Col. David
Hall, 1779. Private, 1st Company, 2nd Battalion, Col. Otho Holland Williams'
Regiment, Southern Army of the US, 1780, and wounded in action on August 16,
1780, at the Battle of Camden when his "eyes were hurt by the flash of a
gun."
Private, Capt. William McKennan's Company, 1782. His name appeared on a list
on invalid pensioners on January 30, 1783. His age was given as 37 [in
1791?] and he lived on Broad Creek in Sussex County, Delaware; on a list of
invalid pensioners paid in 1792 and 1802.
