Isn't anyone out there doing non-American CLIFTONs?
My first connection with this surname is my GGGGrandpa, Joseph CLIFTON,
who married Diana WILDREDGE in 1828, in Northumbria, England. They had
a daughter AnnWildridge CLIFTON (bap. 1834), who m. Thomas John HORN.
I have access to a computer only at work, and I belong to a bunch of
other lists. So I'm going to have to unsubscribe from this one if
there's no chance of making any connections.
TIA!

I could not believe my eyes when I read the digests.
I am researching John CLIFTON who was born in Welford, Northamptonshire
in C.1790.
I quote from "The Colonial Garrison 1817-1824 The 48th Foot The
Northamptonshire Regiment in the Colony of NSW". ""John Clifton, a
true Northamptonshire man born at Welford, had enlisted at Canterbury on
24 June 1817 while the first elements of the 48th were on their way to
NSW. Unlike most of the recruits, Clifton was a mature man, 24 years
of age and a widower. He gave his occupation as 'labourer'. He did not
reach Sydney until June 1818 and married Mary STACKHOUSE on 20 February,
1820."" (30 years of age on his M/C).
Awaiting!!! a LDS film of India to verifty his death. I really
haven't check the IGI properly for his birth record only marriages.
Hope there is match for us.

Judy,
Good question! I'm have CLIFTON in Northamptonshire c1803-05, brothers William & Thomas CLIFTON baptised at Grendon. Father John CLIFTON, mother Sarah Unknown.
Both brothers to AUS in 1825. The IGI doesn't seem to list the family, so as yet have no information on the family pre-1803 or on any other siblings.
Anyone else chasing CLIFTON in Northants?
