I am seeking information on Frances Clifton, daughter of William Clifton
(mother unknown) of Chatham County, North Carolina. Based upon the
birth dates of her children and the remarriage date of her husband,
Frances was born roughly 1780 and died about 1820. I know of no
siblings.
Frances married Aaron Rook (1774 - 1855) in Chatham County, NC around
1800 and moved west with him and some of his siblings to Grainger
County, Tennessee. A few years later, they pushed on to Warren County,
Tennessee, where it is believed that Frances died. Aaron remarried
shortly thereafter. With Frances Clifton he had eight children, Jane
(b. circa 1800), a son (b. circa 1803), Elender (b. circa 1806), Rachel
(b. 3 June 1808), a daughter (b. circa 1811), another daughter (b. circa
1813), a son (b. circa 1816), William (b. 1818), and Jonathan (b.
1820). I am descended from William.
I know nothing more of Frances and even less of her father William (his
name only, really). Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Earl Rook

Hi Sheryl
You can most certainly send the postings to whom ever that may have an
interest. That is one of the reason's why I am doing it. Here is a web site
for our local paper, "the Moberly Monitor-Index" it is supposed to be new
after 6 PM our time daily

I have been working on a data base of all people that died in Randolph
County (born before 1900). It is by no means even close to being done. This
is what I have. Hope it may be of some help.
My code for reference is enclosed first. Any more information that you need
and I have just ask.

Greetings Lists,
Is there anyone who has this CD (WFT vol 25, tree # 569) who would be
willing to do a lookup for me? I *think* my grandparents are on it, but I
have been disappointed every other time I bought one of the CDs, and I
really can't afford $39.99 at the moment.
I am interested in Alice Dove SMITH (b. 9/15/1898 in Afton, OK - d. abt.
1967 in Colorado; Dawes # 28532; Miller # 24810; daughter of Henry J. SMITH
(1856-1910) and Elsey Ann ISOM 1868-?)
She married James Thomas CLIFTON (b. 9/1/1893 in Ft. Gibson, OK -
d.9/30/1965 in CO.
I have a little information on my grandmother since she was a FIELDS
descendant, but I can find absolutely nothing on my grandfather, James T.
CLIFTON, not even an SS listing (I was wondering if he wasn't listed with
SS because he worked on the railroad all his life and maybe they have their
own system or something?)
Thanks in advance for any help, perhaps I can reciprocate in some way.
Peace and Blessings,
Elaine Clifton Tlush

Tracy,
I have done very little work on this group, but I do have a few things that I
will share.
Thomas Clifton apparently married Mary Butterworth around Jan of 1640 in
Weymouth as his second wife and he was her second husband. The Mary Clifton
that married Obadiah Bowen around 1649 was born about 1628, so she must have
been the result of a first marriage to "unknown". According to the LDS files,
Thomas was born in Rehoboth, Nottingham, England. I can neither confirm nor
deny that. It would not have been in Newport, RI, since Newport did not exist
in 1606. Here is what I have on the family group:
Name: Thomas CLIFTON
Birth: 1606 Rehoboth, Nottingham, England 1, 2
Death: 9 Jul 1681 Newport, RI 1
Father: Richard? CLIFTON (1580-)
Other spouses: Mary BUTTERWORTH
Research
Thomas has six acres in Harrises Rainge, first given to Samuel Butterworth. He
was made a freeman of the Mass. Bay Colony 2 Jun 1641, and of Plymouth Colony
7 Jun 1648. At a town meeting 30 Jun 1644 Thomas drew lot 48 at Rehoboth. He
drew lot 19 there 9 Jun 1645 and lot 5 in the new meadow 15 Feb 1646. No vital
records of this family are found at Weymouth or Rehoboth. Savage says they
moved to Rhode Island. 3
Spouse: Unknown
Children
1 F: Mary CLIFTON
Birth: 1628 4
Death: 18 Feb 1697 Swansea, MA 2, 4
Spouse: Obadiah BOWEN

Name: Thomas CLIFTON
Birth: 1606 Rehoboth, Nottingham, England 1, 2
Death: 9 Jul 1681 Newport, RI 1
Father: Richard? CLIFTON (1580-)
Other spouses: Unknown
Marriage: ca Jan 1640 Weymouth, MA 4
Spouse: Mary BUTTERWORTH
Birth: ca 1600 1
Death: 26 Jan 1687 Newport, RI 1
Father: Edward? BUTTERWORTH (ca1556-)
Mother: Elizabeth?
Other spouses: Unknown
Research
On 18 Jan 1640/1 Mr. James Parker was allowed to marry Thomas Cliton of Boston
and Mary Butterworth within a month. 5
It is reported in the Boston transcript that Mary was age 40 at that time and
unmarried about 9 years.
Given that Thomas Cliftons daughter Mary was born in 1628, this must have been
a second marriage for both of them, and Mary the result of the first marriage
of Thomas.
Another date of death for Mary is given as 7 Jul 1681. 2

Hi All, I am still trying to find Levina Clifton b.1808 d? m. David P.
Davis in 1824 in Belmont County, OH. They had many children in OH, IN, IL,
and IA. Her mother could possibly be Mary and she might have a brother
John (and who doesn't :) Anyway, any help you have would be appreciated.

I recently found my connection to John WEBB father of John and Jesse
WEBB. My line is through Jesse born about 1766, possibly in Virginia,
and Anna McMURTRY born 1768 in Botetourt, Bedford Co., Virginia. Anna
was the daugher of Joseph McMURTRY and Susannah PATTON. Joseph born
about 1733, possibly in New Jersey. His parents were Joseph McMURTRY DOB
1685 in Dalmelling Ayrshire, Scotland and Ann BOONE DOB 1692 in
Germantown, Pennsylvania. Susannah's parents were Jacob PATTON and
Jennet B.. Susannah PATTON and Joseph McMURTRY were married in Bedford,
Virginia on 8-27-1759.
Thomas WEBB was the son of Jesse WEBB and Anna McMURTRY. He was born in
1785 in State of Franklin (can someone explain this to me?) and he
married Eleanor Penelope "Nellie" McMURTRY who was in 1796 in Caney
Branch, Green Co., North Carolina/Tennessee. One of their sons was
William WEBB born 1825 in Jefferson Co. Tennessee. William married
Martha A. CLIFTON. Martha was born in 1836, place unknown.
One of their sons was James Alexander WEBB born in 1853 in Jefferson Co.
Tennessee. The family later moved to Cherokee Co. Alabama. In 1878
James married Sarah Agnes CLIFTON born in about 1852. My information
says that Sarah's parents were Aaron CLIFTON born in 1812 and an Unnamed
Indian Woman. I have no place of birth for Sarah or her parents, but the
first record I have on them has them in Blount Co. Alabama. I would love
to have any information about Sarah's mother. I hate writing down
Unknown Indian Woman. Sarah and James were married in 1878 in Alabama.
My information is that the BOONE, PATTON, and McMURTRY families were
Quakers. It is possible that the WEBB family was also Quaker. The
CLIFTON family is a great mystery to me and now that there is a
CLIFTON/WEBB marriage before James and Sarah I am even more confused. I
know that CLIFTON isn't a real unusual name, but the are all in the same
area and I'm willing to grasp a straws. Any information on these
families would be appreciated.
