Hello Everyone:
Just subscribed a few days ago and thought I'd see if anyone could give
me a bit of assistance. I am going the round about way to find my
husband's grandfather's family, but have exhausted all other avenues at
this time.
I am looking for the family of John Clifton. He lived in Arkansas in
the 1880's. I know that this particular John Clifton had a daughter
named Myrtle, b. 1890-1895 and died 1960's? Myrtle had married Henry
Lee Sharp b. 1-16-1893 d. 4-22-1966. They had 3 children that I know
of. The resided in Oklahoma.
Now there was at least one more Clifton daughter born, and I am not
sure, but know there were more children. Now what I am looking for is
another child living with this family by the name of Joe George Gunn b.
12-25-1880. Joe Gunn's mother died giving birth to him, his father
already had 6-7 children in the home and could not take care of a
newborn infant. So he was given to the Clifton family. I do not know
if they were a relation, friends or what.
The Gunn family moved out of the area later on, so we do not know for
sure which Gunn family he belonged to yet.
I am looking for the Cliftons to try to get the area of where they were
at in 1880, we should then be able to narrow our search down
considerably. I know that Joe Gunn ended up in Oklahoma by the 1900's.
I believe the Clifton's were there also, but cannot swear by this.
Can anyone help with this Clifton family. I also have other connections
with this family. Myrtle Clifton and Henry Lee Sharp are also my
husband's aunt and uncle. Henry Lee's sister was my husband's
grandmother on his father's side. They mingled together everywhere.
Any help would be appreciated. I would dearly love to give my
mother-in-law a family that she has never know. The Clifton's were
great foster grandparents for her, but there is nothing like family.
But I have to hurry, she is 91, long time not knowing who your family
really is.
Thanks in advance for any help.

This is from HISTORY OF RANDOLPH COUNTY (Missouri), published in 1920.
William D. Clifton - The name Clifton has more than an ordinary
historic
significance in connection with the history of Randolph County, from the
fact that
Clifton Hill was named in honor of David Clifton, grandfather of William
D. Clifton. He
was the owner of the present site of Clifton Hill and one of the pioneer
settlers in this
locality. William D. Clifton, who is a successful farmer and stockman
and breeder, was
born on a farm one and a half miles east of Thomas Hill, in 1870 and is
a son of Minor
and Catherine (Ficklin) Clifton.
Minor Clifton was born in Owen County, Ky., in 1848 and died in
Randolph
County Nov. 27, 1902. He was a farmer and stockman and was engaged in
that business practically all his life. He was a son of David Clifton,
a Kentuckian, who settled in Randolph County with his family in 1858.
He was also a farmer and stockman. During
the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army in General Prices
division and at the
close of the war, was with General Price when he surrendered at
Shreveport, La.
Catherine (Ficklin) Clifton was born in Randolph County in 1836 and now
resides in
Moberly. To Minor and Catherine (Ficklin) Clifton were born the
following children:
William D., the subject of this sketch; Hugh, Moberly, Mo.; Horace, Long
Beach, Calif.,
and Daniel Boone, Moberly, Mo.; and Leonard lives at Fort Henry, Mo.
William D. Clifton was educated in the public schools and in early
life engaged in
farming and stock raising in which he has met with success. He is the
owner of 80 acres
of valuable land and operates 200 acres, 120 being a part of the old
home place. He is
well known as a successful breeder of Spotted Poland China hogs.
Mr. Clifton was married in 1895 to Miss Mildred Vaughan, of Chariton
township.
She is a daughter of Lewis and Mallie Vaughan, early settlers of
Randolph County. Mr.
and Mrs. Clifton have one daughter, Kathryn, who married Robert Heifner,
Jan. 18, 1920 and they reside four miles northwest of Huntsville, Mo.
Mr. Clifton is a member of the Baptist church and is a Democrat. He
holds
membership in the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge and is a highly
respected and
substantial citizen of this county.
[ between these two sketches are ones on A. D. Asbell and Joseph F.
Heifner]
Rev. Daniel Boone Clifton was a native of Kentucky, was born in 1841
and died
April 17, 1918. He was a son of David Clifton, after whom Clifton Hill
was named and
further mention of whom is made in connection with the sketch of W. D.
Clifton. Rev.
Daniel Boone Clifton was a Baptist minister and in the early days
preached the gospel in
Howard, Macon, Randolph and Boone counties. He was, perhaps, the best
known of the pioneer preachers in this section of Missouri and during
the course of his career had
charge of many churches. He baptized a great many people during his
time and preached
a great many funeral sermons and performed marriage ceremonies without
number. He
remained vigorous and was active in the ministry until two years before
his death. Mary
(Kinman) Clifton was born in Kentucky in 1839 and died Dec. 18, 1916.
She came here
with her husband Rev. Daniel Boone Clifton shortly after their marriage
in 1866, he
having returned to Kentucky for her. They were the parents of the
following children:
Fannie, deceased; Hugh, deceased; Julia, the wife of Joseph F. Heifner,
the subject of this
[previous] sketch and Ollie, deceased. [Previous sketch noted Julias
birth was Jan 19,
1871]
[Also, please note that this Daniel Boone Clifton is referred to as
David on census records]
I hope this reveals something helpful to the list.

I found a GEDCOM refering to an Austin Clifton born in Harlin County, KY born

I have not posted to the list for quite a while so....
I am still looking for the ancestors of Samuel Clifton (b. 1793 NC; m.
Winefred/Winefor/Winna Walker 1821 Lincoln/Tryon Co. NC; d. 1890 Perry Co.
MO). I believe he may have had a brother James (b. 1784; d. 1839) who also
moved to Perry Co. MO with him.
The possibilities (from the Lincoln Co. NC 1800 and 1810 census records)
for Samuel's father are David or James. Is anyone out there researching
these families? Thank you for any help you can give me on this,

Do any other Clifton researchers have Clifton in Northamptonshire, England,
in the early 1800s?
I have a Clifton family in the village of Grendon in the first decade of the
19th Century. 2 baptisms performed before c1806 (sons William and Thomas).
Parents were John Clifton, pauper, and his wife Sarah.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who has Clifton in/around
Grendon, Northamptonshire in the early 1800s.

Clifton researchers, found this post on the STAMPER mailing list. It was a
bit intriguing as it has a J.B. Clifton found in LA with STAMPERS. The
STAMPER surname was abundant in Owen Co KY and many of my CLIFTON and COBB kin
intermarried with the them. Some of the STAMPER line also moved on to
Randolph Co MO area with my CLIFTON and COBB ancestors.
Hope someone is looking for a J.B. CLIFTON,

CLIFTON cousins,
Sorry to post my private e-mail response to a TN CLIFTON researcher. I put
the posting address in the CC box to copy it - and forgot to delete it before
sending my e-mail to Bill. Guess that signals that it is time for me to take
a long break from the computer. I have spent too much time trying to catch up
on work left undone during the holidays. Hope that you all have a wonderful
New Year. And maybe I will make a few LESS errors this year!
