Gordon,
I know of no primary source that tells us Hannah was the wife of Daniel Pegg III. Daniel and Hannah were around for the 1790 census, but that, of course, only listed the Heads of the families. The first mention of Hannah is in the W.J. Pegg papers. Milton Pegg, who wrote the Pegg Book in 1970 stated that he got the information on Daniel and Hannah's children from "proof recently received from descendants of their daughter, Hannah, and from the research of William J. Pegg of Sharon, Ont....."
I cannot remember where I got the information that Elias Pegg named one of this daughters Isabella Clifford at this time. It might have been from Roger Huff.
I would be interested in any information you have on the MA Cliff/Clift family. I also have Hannah's father listed as Jacob or Joseph, but I think I got that off of the LDS cite and it is not always reliable. I would probably side with Hannah's father being a Joseph since she named one of her older sons Joseph. The earliest Jacob I have is a grandson of Hannah. Daniel IV named his second son Jacob. maybe that is where the Joseph or Jacob hypothesis came from.

Hi Sheri,
My suspicions are totally circumstantial -- simply that there don't seem to be _any_ Cliff or Clift families in the Philadelphia area who could be Hannah's forebears. I know that there were a number of (related) Clifts in MA and it just seemed like a good possibility. I really have no evidence (documentation seems to be lacking on this family).
Don't know who Garrett Newgill is -- he's not in my database -- but I'd bank on the fact that Isabella Pegg is a cousin. Not too many unrelated Peggs around, it's a pretty uncommon name.
Interesting about Isabella Clifford Pegg. I'd never come across that one; and it certainly makes me wonder if Hannah wasn't a Clifford. Sources seem none too sure of her name -- even her father is listed as "Joseph or Jacob." Do you know what the primary source is where her name is mentioned?
Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,
Why do you suspect that Hannah might have been from the Cliff/Clift family of MA?
I also have her father listed as a Jacob or Joseph, but no real proof as to that either. I have been looking for Hannah's family for a long time and mostly come up empty.
Have you noticed that Elias Pegg, Hannah's son, named a daughter Isabella Clifford Pegg? I wonder if Hannah's last name might have been Clifford and not Cliff OR maybe Isabella's middle name should read CLIFT/CLIFF?
I did find something interesting in the Yogohania Co., VA (SW PA) records regarding an Isabella Pegg and Isabella Clift.
MINUTES OF COURT OF YOHOGANIA CO., VA (SW PA), p.95
9/22/1777--Present Isaac Cox, William Goe, Oliver Miller, Joshua Wright, Gentlemen Justices...
Ordered that ISABEL PEGG by appointed administrator of all Goods, Chattles, and Credits of the Estate of GARRET NEWGILL deceased. She complying with the Law. Whereupon, the said Isabel Pegg with Hames Wright, her surety, came into Court and entered into Bond for the PErformance of the said Administration. ISABEL PEGG came into COurt and took the Oath of Administration of the Estate of Garrett New GIll, dec'd. ORDERED that John Wall, BENJAMIN COLLENDS and JOHN COX or any two of them being first sworn do appraise all the Estate of Garrett Newgil, dec'd and make return to the next Court.
Do you know what year Daniel and Hannah Pegg moved to SW PA or VA? I just list sometime before 1795. Do you have any idea who Isabella Pegg is?
Minute Book G, p. 450
Ordered 50 acres to ISABEL CLIFT, servant to Joseph Fisher in 1782.
I haven't been able to find any info on Garret Newgill either. Do you think there is any relationship here?

I'm hoping for more information on this man.
I think I have managed to work the following out, (without full access to the 1901 census):
In the 1881 census he is 14 and living with his parents Alfred and Mary at 5 Taylors Court, Trowbridge, Wilts.
In 1901 he is living with his wife Ann in Ystradyfogwg, Glamorgan, Wales. Also I believe with them is my mother's father, Thomas Smith, who was 13 at the time.
There is some uncertainty of the events that led Thomas to be living with the Clifts, but they were known to his children as grandma and grandpa Clift.
Thomas was born in Wattstown, Glamorgan - I don't know to whom - he married Gertrude Lloyd (b.c1901). He later joined the merchant navy and died in the early 1930s.
Any information much appreciated.
Andrew

Hi Mindy, I 'm afraid they are not the same Ruth's. My gr grandmother Ruth Clift was born in England in 1840. She was the daughter of Thomas Clift and Mary Ann Mayo. I only have record of there being her and her two brothers in this family but I always wondered if there were more siblings. Sorry, I don't see a connection. My Clift's were Mormons and came from England to Salt Lake City, Utah. Thanks for the reply anyway.....Dottie
