Thanks for this. I have had a message from Lee Ann and have copied in Bill
Marquis (_WMarq69070(a)aol.com_ (mailto:WMarq69070@aol.com) ) who has a vast
collection of New England Cliffords. I will forward this e-mail to him.
Cheers, David. clyfford(a)aol.com
Lee Ann,
John Clifford, b. 1614 came to Salisbury, MA abt 1638 and moved in a year
or two to Hampton, NH. The family prospered there and grew to spread into
sueeounding areas, including Maine. I figure we are very distantly related.
I have a lot of information on the NH Cliffords, but only one in my database
wound up in Maine, but I'm sure many more did. If you know the name of your
NH forbear, I may be able to to tie you in all the way back to Rollo.
John Clifford was of the Bobbing, Kent, line in England . James Clifford

Sorry. i cannot help right now. If you can get back to an UK origin it
would help a great deal. Rgds, David Clifford. _clyfford(a)aol.com_

Our line stems from Rollo, first Duke of Normandy. One of his descendants fell afoul of a nephew, William the Conqueror, and was deprived of his title . He assumed thw name Pons. later Poyntz. One of his descendants received Cliffor Castle as a wedding present and assumed the name de Clifford. The de was later dropped.. The castle was so named as it was on a cliff by a ford in the River Wye. The first Clifford in our line to come tothe U.S. landed in Salisbury, MA, about 1638 , but moved soon to Hanpton, NH. The Cliffords spread around the area of Hampton, includtng into Maine. Early in the 19th Century our line moved West into Iowa and Illinois . Although there are several lines of Cliffords in England stemming from Baron Walter de Clifford, the name Clifford is derived from a situation. and there may be many unrelated Clifford lines. I have no known relatives in Pennsylvania or Virginia but do have some in England, Australia , Wisconsin , Michigan and D.C.. James Clifford Eaton
Hello Peggy, My grandmother was Margaret Theresa Clifford b, 9-15-1881
to Joseph and Mary Goodwin Clifford. They were living in Benwood WVA at
the time. Joseph was born in Ireland around 1844 but I don't know the
county. Mary was born in Saltsburg PA around1851. I can find no traces
of either great grandparent except in the 1880 census which lists their
family minus my grandmother who was yet to be born. I don't know where
Joseph and Mary are buried.
Margaret Clifford spent most of her life in W.PA.
