All,
I'm cross-posting this to the surname lists in the subject.
This is rather LONG, so I'll list my immediate questions first:
1) Can anyone confirm that the Catharine Delong here is the daughter of
Nathaniel Delong?
2) Does anyone have James W. Black's father's name?
3) Does anyone have any information about the Elizabeth Norman names?
4) Does anyone have any information on THIS Samuel Clifford?
Here's what I have found, combined with my guesses:
1820 (about) Eliza Norman born to unknown Norman and Elizabeth unknown in Virginia.
1840 Possiblility: marriage of an Eliza Norman & a Henry Black, in Ross County, Ohio
Black, Henry Norman, Eliza Oct 26, 1840
1842 unknown BLACK & Eliza NORMAN have James W. Black in Ohio
1847 Eliza Ann/Jane (Norman) Black marries Samuel Clifford in Ross County, Ohio on June 15th.
One part of page says "Ann" the other says "Jane."
1850 Census Liberty Twp, Wabash County, INDIANA <----- note the state
Samuel Clifford 20(23?) b. Ohio
Eliza 30 b. Virginia
James Black 8 b. Ohio <----- presumably my James W. Black
Elizabeth Norman 49 b. Virginia <----- presumably Eliza's mother
Henry 20 b. Virginia
John 16 b. Virginia
Sarah 9 b. Ohio
Abi 7 b. Ohio
1860 Census (has oddities), Pebble Twp, Pike County, Ohio
Samuel Clifford 30 b. Ohio
Eliza 40 b. Virginia
James 10 b. Ohio <----- presumably James W. Black and SHOULD be age 18
Sarah J 5 b. Ohio
Alfred 3 b. Ohio
Mary 1 b. Ohio
Note: I bet someone out of the family gave this information and/or the census
taker was very sloppy. Note birth places for Sarah & Alfred, and James' age.
I suppose it could be a different family, but that seems unlikely,
considering the age difference between Samuel & Eliza, and their birth places.
Question: Where is Lydia?
1861 James Black & Catharine Delong marry. 29 MAY 1861 in Ross Co., OH
Catharine Delong is probably the daughter of Nathaniel Delong b. abt.
1813 and Isabella Enslow b. abt 1816. Catharine would have been born
abt. 1840 in Ohio
1868 January 19, Nathan Black is born to Catharine & James in Ross County, OH
Birth is registered in Pike County.
1870 February, Eliza Jane Black is born. I haven't located the birth record, yet.
1870 Census, Pee Pee Twp, Pike County, Ohio
Samuel Clifford 41 b. Ohio
Eliza A. 50 b. Virginia <--- middle name probably Ann NOT Jane
Sarah J 14 b. Indiana <--- fits better as birth place
Alfred 12 b. Indiana <--- fits better as birth place
Lydia E. Walters 19 b. Indiana
Eliza Edna Walters 2 b. Ohio
James W. Black 28 b. Ohio
Catharine 29 b. Ohio
Nathan 2 b. Ohio <--- my g-grandfather Nathan
Eliza Jane 4/12 b. Ohio <--- these people had NO imagination;-)
NOTE: Mary isn't listed. Died?
NOTE: Lydia Clifford Walters dies in Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois in
1912 and shows birth place as Indiana and Eliza Norman & Samuel Clifford as parents.
1880 Census, Thomasborough, Champaign County, Illinois
James W. Black 38(?) b. Ohio widower, parents both born in VA.
Nathan 12 b. Ohio, both parents born in OH
Jane E. 10 b. Ohio, both parents born in OH -- decided Eliza was confusing?-)
On the SAME page:
Samuel Clifford 40 b. Ohio, father born ??, mother born Ohio
Eliza 50 b. Virgina, both parents born in VA
Alfred 22 b. Indiana, father Ohio, mother VA
NOTE: Samuel & Eliza don't seem to have aged in THIS 10 years:-)
1894 Nathan Black marries Ella S. Fye in Nebraska and indicates parents as
James W. Black and Catharine Delong.
1900 Nathan, Ella, and children are in Canton Twp, Fulton County, Illinois.
I bet that there are family somewhere VERY close at that time. I haven't
searched that area, yet, for the CLIFFORD, BLACK, or WALTERS names.
1910 and onward, Nathan & family are in the North Platte, NE area. Nathan
dies in 1929. Ella survives until 1949(?).
A _maybe_ connected:
James R. Wallace, born February 16, 1835 in Ohio; died Bef. June 15, 1900;
married Abigail Norman Unknown; born October 1842 in Ohio; died 1924.
I know this was HORRIBLY long. I hope some of you made it this far.
TIA,
Dick
