Hi,
Has anybody run across any menbers of this family?
In 1880 they were living in WVA but have ties to PA
Joseph Clifford, b.1844 Ireland
Mary Goodwin Clifford b.1851 Saltsburg, Pa.
James b. 1867
Nancy b. 1871
Kathrine b.1873
John Henry b. 23 Dec. 1874 Belmont, Ohio
Joseph b. 1877
Treacie b. 1879
Margaret b. 15 Sept. 1881 Benwood,WV
Except for Margaret, this family was listed on the 1880 WV census. I
can't find any trace before or after that date. The birthdates I listed
are my guess from the census. They could be off a yr. Thanks, Donna

Hi Colette,
A preliminary check of my files showed no Joseph Clifford born in VT
anywhere around 1816. My records contain a full transcription of all of the
birth records on file with the state in Montpelier.
However, I found one family that might be worth further investigation. A
Joseph Clifford, born c. 1773, probably in Dorchester, NH, married 1797,
Mary Welles. Around 1800 this couple moved to Danville, VT, where they spent
the remainder of their lives. The family of Joseph's father, John Clifford,
is outlined in Ezra Stearns' "History of Plymouth, NH", because some of
Joseph's siblings settled in Plymouth. According to Stearns, Mary (Welles)
died leaving nine children, Joseph remarried and produced ten more children
with his second wife, who is unnamed in Stearns' history. However, this
corresponds to a marriage record in Danville, VT of a Joseph Clifford and
Anna Trice. This is probably Joseph's second marriage. Joseph died in
Danville in 1847, age 74. Information on his children is very sketchy. Only
three have recorded births. I have been able to identify a couple more from
their death records which list the parents' names. Other Cliffords marrying
in Danville are also probably his. I have no record that there was a son
named Joseph, but I find it hard to believe that with nineteen children, he
didn't name one after himself. Bill, do you have anything more on this
family?
Back beyond Joseph there is something of a mystery. His father, John,
married Mary Worthen in Chester, NH. He settled in Rumney, NH and later
moved to Dorchester. John's parents are unknown. I have corresponded with
several of John's descendants, who would love to trace him back further.
I also have info on another Joseph, son of Samuel, born in Stanstead,
Quebec, just over the border from VT. I don't have a birth date for him, but
he is probably too old to be your Joseph.
I will make a more complete search of my files over the weekend and get back
to you.
Regards,
Clark

Well I am hoping that I am not the only one on this list, I think I have
only
seen a couple of post.
I am looking for the parents of Joseph and Mary, where did they both die and
where are they buried. If you are connected or know of anyone connected to
this family please email me.

Hi Colette,
I have quite a bit of material on the Clifford family in northern New
England. Off the top of my head I can't place your Joseph. My research was
done a few years ago; it's not on computer, but I'll check my paper notes.
Most of the Cliffords in VT were originally from NH. Several branches had
moved over by 1816. Joseph was a fairly common name in the NH Clifford
family.
Did you get the date of 1816 for his birth from the census? Have you found
him in the 1850 or 1860 Wisconsin census? Which county? I ask because
certain areas of Wisconsin were settled by people primarily from northern NH
and VT. The county might be a clue to his origin. Have you looked at his
neighbors in the census to see if any of them came from NH or VT? Any other
details of his life you can give me?
I'll check my files and get back to you.
