Hi Everyone,
I am searching for details of my grandfather John (Jack) Clifford. I cannot find his birth supposedly 1870 Mt Gambier South Australia. He married Charlotte Ruth Mill 23 May 1907 at Goyura Victoria Australia. He died March 27 1962 at Lidcombe Sydney Australia. He was reported as aged 94 at death. His marriage certificate and each of the birth certificates for two of his seven children listed his birthplace as Echuca Victoria? I have a photograph taken of him with a Tom A. Beckitt looks like early 1900's by the suits and backdrop in the photograph (studio shot). On his marriage certificate his father was listed as deceased, name Gordon Clifford and his mother was listed as Elizabeth Brooks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Dear John, Thank you for the message. I don't think we have any
connection. My g.grandfather Joseph Clifford was born in Ireland circa
1844. He married Mary Goodwin and they lived in PA and WV. I have found
no trace of them since the WV 1880 census. They already had 6 children
then. My grandmother was born in 1881 to that family. Nothing but a
brick wall!
Thanks again, Donna

Dear all,
this is a long shot...
My grandfather John Clifford, came to Australia in 1926.
His father died 3 months before my grandfather was born (in 1891).
I am told that my grandfather's father (my mother thinks his name might
have been Hugh or Hubert) was a musical conductor who was on tour in
South Africa when he died (possibly in Durban or Cape Town).
My grandfather's mother was a singer and adopted my grandfather out to
some people called Downey who lived in Halifax Yorkshire when he was 2
years old. I think her name was Claris and she had 2 daughters whom she
kept (Ida and Leila so the story goes).
My grandfathers mother and daughters toured as a singing troupe I
believe even coming to Australia on the Tivoli circuit.
My grandfather joined the English Army (in which he became a musician),
was sent back to France three times during the 1st World War and then
emigrated to Australia with his wife and daughter (my mother). My mother
has became a well-known and successful musician (May Clifford).
Interested if you can give me any leads.
My mother is not sure of my grandfathers fasther's place of birth
(Blackpool was mentioned)...but there is no certainty about this.
Regards,
John Bell
