Hello to the CLIFFORD family!
I am looking for this family! Just maybe someone out there will have
some leads
Harmon (Herman) CLIFFORD b) Scot???
+ Jane Mahon (Delong?) m) before 1859? Iowa ?
son:) Morton David CLIFFORD b) 24 May 1859 Ottumwa, Wapello Co,
IA
Morton was married in Grant Co, Oregon
I know for sure about Morton D. Clifford, but his mother and father
need some more searching. The mother Jane did remarry... so that is
not unknown, but the father is a mystery. Perhaps he was in Civil War
and did not return. To this date I have not found any Civil War
information.
Thanks for your help

As mentioned in No. 1. Martin CLIFFORD is mentioned and to see Chapter No.,
Sisty-One (61). This is titled The CLIFFORDS of BOBBING, Kent (1438-1677)
I am not going to type this in its entirity as the article is Three pages and
a chart.
The CLIFFORDS of Bobbing, near Sittingbourne in Kent, were close kin of the
CLIFFORDS of Borscombe, from whom the CLIFFORDS of Chudleigh descends. They
were, in fact, senior to the Chudleigh line for they stemmed from Lewis, the
eldest son of William CLIFFORD (see Chapter Twenty-Eight), the grandson of
Thomas CLIFFORD, Lord of Thomond, while the Borscombe-Chudleigh CLIFFORDS
descend from his youngest brother John. They were not particulary
distinguished during the century and a half which followed Lewis, who died
some time before 1438, and it was only during the reign of Elizabeth I that
some of them achived knighthood for services to the Crown. The branch appears
to have died out with Martin CLIFFORD in 1677, BUT it has to be said that the
descendants of his great uncle, Henry CLIFFORD, who died in 1599, and who had
three sons, have not been traced, and may , perhaps, survive....... (my
note........Yes this line from Henry does survive and I am one of this line)
More on this later).
The Bobbing branch is said to have borne arms Chequy or (Gold) and Sable
(Black), a fesse and bordure gules and on the fesse a crescent Argent (Red)
quartered with the arms of Savage. (my note..this statment also is of
interest......)
This presents us, if accurate, with a puzzle, and wonders if, indeed, it can
be correct, for all the other CLIFFORDS bore Chequy or (Gold) and Azure
(Blue). The addition of the crescent is of interest, for it indicates descent
from a second son. This is possible if the line is taken back beyond William
at the head of the attached pedigree, for he was the son of Hugh, who was a
younger son of Thomas CLIFFORD of Thomond, third son of Robert, 3rd Baron
CLIFFORD (1305-44) (see Chapter Fourteen and Twenty-Eight). Thus the Bobbing
line can be said to descend from a younger son, though we cannot be
absulutely certain that Hugh was Thomas' second son and thus senior to Lewis,
Robert and Bishop Richard...........The article goes on to mention the
various wives who came from leading county families.....etc.
Will add more about this Chapter in next issue... I am typing the information
from the book rather trying to scan the pages......
Regards,
Leroy B.
I have permission from Lord CLIFFORD to put data on the various sites which
pertains to the various CLIFFORD lines. I will be only typing some of the
data which is found in the book "The House of CLIFFORD" Hope the info has
some meaning to some of you.
From chapter Sixty-Nine (69) titled Other Overseas CLIFFORDS
It would be incorrect to think that there are no CLIFFORDS other than those
described in this book, for the information of the CLIFFORD ASSOCIATION is
bringing to light many who bear the name, and who have , or hope to trace,
direct links with one or other of the branches described above. The name
occurs widely in the United States, and there are many CLIFFORD in Australia,
whose links have not yet been established.
The CLIFFORDS of TIXALL continue as a cadet branch of the CHUDLEIGH line
in New Zealand following the Emigration of Charles CLIFFORD (1813-93), whose
career was described in Part Four. In Canada there is a branch stemming from
Edward Arthur CLIFFORD, a younger brother of the stem of the CHESTAL
CLIFFORDS, who emigrated in 1868. With five male members of this line living
today it seems to continue.
Martin CLIFFORD, who emigrated temporarily to Virginia in the 17th century
(see Chapter Sixty-One), was not the only CLIFFORD to go to that first
English colony in America. A John CLIFFORD was exporting indentured servants
from Bristol to Virginia in July 1672. It is possible that he was the John
mentioned in Chapter Sixty-One who appears as a headright of Edward LOCKEY of
New Kent County in 1658. A Benedict CLIFFORD was sentenced in October 1718 to
transportation at the Middleses Sessions of Gaol delivery but to which solony
is not stated. A later American branch stems from a Henry CLIFFORD who
emigrated in 1871. This is a cadet branch of the Frampton CLIFFORDS. It is
not yet known whether there are any living members of this branch...

Leroy B.

Robyn,
James CLIFFORD is my 6g-grandfather. I'm descended from John's brother
Charles. Here's what I have on John's family, mostly from a hardcopy
document "The Clifford Line" that I received from Rosemary Clifford
McDaniel (rmcdaniel(a)erols.com). I have some interesting textual detail
from the same document and family notes that I'd be happy to share with
you. Do you have any more detail on James CLIFFORD's ancestry?

Sam Clifford was born in Ireland in abt 1780 & was in Duke of Wellingtons army that went to India in 1800. He came back to Chatham Kent in 1805. In 1807 he had a son called Louis Henry. Louis married Susannah Claus in 1835. They had several kids -Jane, Henry,William Edwards (in 1847) and Fred George. Fred George had a daughter called Clara Eliza, in 1877. She married Henry james Medhurst in abt 1910. They had a daughter Nellie Clara in abt 1812.
If anyone has any links to any of these it would be appreciated if you let me know. Thanks
Regards
David Clifford Raphael
Hello everyone,
I have just joined your mailing list.
My connection to the Clifford name goes back a long way.
My ancestor, Martha Armitage married John Clifford. John was the son of James Clifford, born 1748/49 d. 1842, Bethlehem, Hunterdon N.J.
Martha was the daughter of Reuben Armitage of Hopewell, Hunterdon Co. N.J. and had sisters, Mary, Sarah, who married Dr. Benjamin Van Kirk and brother Enoch.
Martha and John had 5 children. Martha had 3 children by a previous marriage to a William Hunt.
The Clifford children were:- Charles, Enoch, Reuben, Martha and Nancy according to my family tree. However, I think the Reuben may be a mistake. One was called Betsy. (Elisabeth)
I believe the family lived for a time with Martha's brother Enoch, on the farm called "Stoney Brook" Hopewell and afterwards one of John's sons bought the house block, when the farm was sold.
Thank you to those who have already helped my enquiries.
I would be very happy to help anyone if I can. Similarly can anyone shed further light on my side of the family of Cliffords?
Australia is quite a distance from New Jersey...
All the best,
Robyn Clarke.
After a month of complete and total frustration with my high-speed cable internet access (HA!), I have returned to Sprint and it's slow, but more reliable, dial-up connection. So once again, my e-mail address is sloechner(a)sprint.ca (for now anyway!).
Sorry for the confusion and have a great day...Shannon
Please remove Nicole from your list she is a child.
Thank you,
Her Dad

I have not found a single source for marriage records prior to 1800 in
South Carolina, so I have started one of my own. Any additions or
correction
to this file would be appreciated. E-Mail me at prsjr(a)aol.com
