My 3x Great Grandfather was William Cliff and he married Hannah Davies in 1834 in Cheshire. And there 4 children all where born in Leeds.
The children were:
John born - 1840 in Leeds
Thomas christened 1843 in Barnby Dun, Yorkshire
James born 1843 in Leeds and christened 1845 in Barnby Dun, Yorkshire.
Mary christened 1849 in Barnby Dun, Yorkshire.
So maybe in Barnby Dun, was their family church. And they went there to christen their children.

I have a Walter Cliff in my line who worked for the Erie Railroad in New Jersey, USA. He was my mother's Uncle and came from leeds, England somewhere around the 1890's. He came to this country with his brothers Joseph and Arthur. His other brother William stayed behind in Leeds. His parents were George and Elizabeth who had previously lived in Hunslet, just south of Leeds. The birth dates don't fit unless my Walter had a son who then worked for the railroad. I have no information about his marriage or children. As far as I know he was never married but I remember something about the Masons. Now this is the Walter born in 1880 something and I used to help him swing his lantern at night when trains came through his crossing somewhere around Bloomfield or Nutley, New Jersey. He died about 1948 or thereabouts and to the best of knowledge was a bachelor. But genealogy is a funny thing. I live in Brigham City, Utah about 50 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah. Let me know if this !
ties in with anything you have. Good Luck.

My grandfather, Joseph (Charles?) Cliff came from Leeds to
Essex County, New Jersey, USA about 1890. He came with 2 brothers; Walter and Arthur together. A 4th brother William stayed behind in leeds. The Parents had lived previously in Hunslet, south of the Leeds area. This is listed in the 1881 census. They were George and Elizabeth Cliff. They had 4 sons as listed above. Father george was a printers engineer (probably a mechanic) and Elizbeth is listed as a woolen weaver. Evenutally they all came to America and most are buried in the Bloomfield, New Jersey, cemetary. If anything here ties in with what you have please let me know. I live in Brigham City, Utah which is only 50 north of Salt Lake City, Utah. P.S. I have other Cliffs which were born in Leeds ca 1840 which could possibly be related to James and others. My mother is a Cliff. Good luck.

Hi Julia -
There may be a link. If you would like to share info please email me. My gr. gr grandparents migrated to New England possibly in the late 1860s, My gr gr gr grandmother was Mary Cliff (spouse Alfred (?) who may have died in Leeds, unsure) Her son, James, my gr gr grandfather married MaryAnne Elliot(t) (from Blyth) in a Leeds church, maybe in 1861, not sure but the street was Grafton Street in Leeds. They had several children: ), Alfred, James(my gr grand), Lily, Rose, Violet, Thomas Edward, Camilia (born in the states). My gr grandfather came to the US when he was about 12, and he later married here and my grandfather, Albert had a sister Rose, and adopted brother (family scandal I'm told), Edward Thomas among several sibs who died in childhood. Would love to know what you have so far and maybe there is a link, maybe cousins!! take care - Doreen
