November 2011 Update
Dear ScotlandsPeople Customer
Now that the clocks have fallen back and we’re into the shorter days, many people will be looking to spend more time researching their family history with online resources. So to help you get the most out of the ScotlandsPeople website, we’re attending a number of events this winter to offer tips and advice.
The 50+ Show – Glasgow, 11 and 12 November
The next event we’re attending is the 50+ Show at the SECC in Glasgow on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November. Staff will be on hand to demonstrate our website and give some search tips.
Dee Williams will also be representing ScotlandsPeople at this event, and is giving a speech entitled, ‘How to Find Your Scottish Ancestors’. Dee will be speaking on the Friday and Saturday, from 1.45pm to 2.15pm.
If you’re planning to attend this event, you can save yourself the £10 admission fee by registering at the '50+' website. Registration is free, but you have to do this by Thursday 10 November at the latest.
Scotland’s History Festival – Edinburgh, 14 to 30 November
This Festival is shaping up to be major cultural event in Scotland, with leading historians such as Tom Devine giving talks. There are around 60 events taking place over the 17 days, at various locations in Edinburgh and Midlothian.
The three - and FREE! - events that ScotlandsPeople are staging at the History Festival are:
‘Who Do You Think You Were?’ Road Show - Venue: Stockbridge Library, Edinburgh. Date and time: Thursday 17 November, 10am to 12 mid-day.
'How to Research and Create Your Family Tree' - Venue: The Dome Facility at New Register House. Date and time: Thursday 17 November, 2.15pm to 3.15pm.
'The Top 20 Pre-1855 Family History Sources in the National Records of Scotland' - Venue: The Dome Facility at New Register House. Date and time: Thursday 17 November, 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
All three of these events are FREE and can be viewed at www.historyfest.co.uk/events/ , though pre-registration is required for the talks. You can register for talks at http://historyfest2011.eventbrite.com/.
We hope you’re able to visit us at one of these events and look forward to seeing you there.

'If Winter Comes…’
Finally, just in case our mention of the dark nights increased the SAD levels of fellow Calvinist-influenced sufferers out there, we offer solace and inspiration via a line of poetry by Shelley:
‘If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?'
