Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
That would make sense. If her first marriage was to a Cleverly, it
must have been in england, because I can't find any record of it in the
US. Darn. I was hoping she was a sister to Lt. John Cleverly of
Boston, and that I had found the missing link from Lt. Cleverly in the
colonies to Cleverly in England.

This is part of my family's direct line, also! Blacksmiths and
shoemakers were among our early colonial ancestors. My mother's father
(deceased) and brother are both John Cleverly's from Braintree.
I will post the info I have collected so far next week - it is all at
my mom's, whom I'll be visiting next Tuesday or Wednesday. Benjamin
and Joseph are mentioned in John Adam's diaries
(http://www.masshist.org/DIGITALADAMS/aea/cfm/doc.cfm?id=D13). One of
the John Cleverly's was a much-hated, boring teacher of John Adams
(from the Adams Chronicles by Jack Shephard. I think we have a copy of
a map of the tract of land that belonged to Lt. John Cleverly, much of
which was sold to the Adams family, and we have pictures of Lt John and
Sarah Cleverly's gravesights in the Hancock cemetary. John Cleverly,
d.1776, and his younger brother, Joseph, d.1802, were both early
colonial Harvard graduates (1715 and 1733, respective graduation
dates): http://colonialancestors.com/harvard1.htm.
My mom is 92, maiden name is Cleverly. If her health permits, we plan
to make a trip to Boston in the fall to do some research. For her
birthday, I am trying to locate records in England for Lt. Cleverly's
ancestors, and records in Ireland for my mom's other ancestors,
(Carroll family in Youghal, married into the Cleverly family).
thanks for the information!

These are marriages that I have found in Massachusetts records, mostly
through ancestry.com. The John who died in 1703 is the origin of this
line.
He
first shows up in records from Braintree, MA, getting married around
1660.
John Cleverly is described as a lieutenant who came from England, and
he was
also a blacksmith.. The first 2-3 generations seem to have been
relatively
prosperous, receiving land grants on the order of 400 acres in
Braintree.
Benjamin, alive during the revolutionary war, may have had some Tory
sympathies, as a town record says he was "deemed inimical to the
United
States."
Nonetheless, the early generations were apparently solid citizens,
being town
selectmen, fence surveyors, etc.

I am descended from the John Cleverly, who went from England to
Massachusetts in the mid-1660s.I have not been able to find out about his English roots,
except that the Mass. records describe him as a lieutenant and blacksmith.
Our family legend is that he came from sheep farming people in Lancaster. He
had many descendents in the Braintree-Quincy area of Massachusetts, several of
whom still live in that area.

We have traced our Cleverly family line directly to Lt. John Cleverly,
buried in Braintree, MA, b.1635?, d.1703; married to Sarah Stevens.
Our research has stopped with his generation, though.
We can find no reference to Lt. John Cleverly's birthplace nor to his
parents.
Our assumption is that this must be the first direct Cleverly
descendent of ours to come to the colonies from England, but we'd love
to find out when he left England, where in England was he born, and
find his descendants so that we can continue tracing the family line in
England.
Any information would be welcome. Thanks!
Sue
