Record Ofc
Hello Dare Researchers, and ALL UK surname Researchers;
There is so much available in these records, you soon begin to hate
your surname, because it is causing too much work, as you locate record
after record of your surname, often in context w/ associated surnames, &
refs to others of similar or exact surname - can we say an embarrassement of
riches: But are they related to your exact circumstances?
Well, you could have tens, approaching a hundred results, all of which
require checking out. I almost sigh in relief when all clues are exausted,
then realizing I now have tens of leads, all of which need checking out.
Frankly, it can soon become too much to handle, and the one research flaw is
that each lead does NOT have a INet unique Link - you must go to the
'Master' Link, enter the surname, and Replicate your prior search.
I'm not criticizing the Archives, but to be productive, you must save
the results of each good clue and then, when time once again permits, return
to each clue by re-researching each clue, knowing you will be doing it for
dozens and dozens of clues, then repeating again for each other clue, AND
for each branch of each clue. The mind is soon scrambled, and after
recovery, the motivation lags a bit.
I found near a 100 DARE posts, each of which has branches, and branches
of those branches, etc, etc, etc . . . . . And, rarely do they
auto-match, so you need to find a method to ID each closely matching clue,
to enable a return after following the seemingly best branch to the end.
They soon merge into a blob. And it's bad enought for our DAREs, but for
Smith or Jones, pass the Excedrine!!!
In partial proof, I'll paste below one paragraph, a very beautiful
paragraph out of hundreds such, for hundreds of researchers, in proof of the
OVERLOAD concept: (My John Dare is abt half way down:
". . . limekiln and land, Staple Fitzpaine, by John Dare to Job Channing of
Thurlbear (1846);" -
Note the absence of Links to ID the previous research - either get it
ALL done in one pass, or one sitting, or take the time to re-familiarize
yourself on return, possibly weeks later.
Barry (complaining about an embarrasment of Riches,
realizing how much I've left for tommorrow -
noting just some of the Dares below to which I must return)

TitleEast Lydford deeds, etc.
DescriptionEast Lydford Farm (86a., not detailed), purchased by Caleb
Dickinson in 1747, having been owned by the Scrase family from 1679.
Settlement after the marriage of Henry Scrase of East Lydford and Philippa
his wife, daughter of Emanuel Hole of Lovington, 1703. Copy will of Henry
Scrass, yeoman, 1694, proved 1696; probate of will of Philippa Scrace, 1724,
proved 1725; and letters of administration for Henry Scrase, 1747, all of
East Lydford.
Map of East Lydford and Babcary
[No title, surveyor or scale].
Endorsed 'A plan of East Lydford Farm' [probably by Edward Dare of Keevil, *
* * Wiltshire].
c 20in to 1 mile.
OS 64 SW.
c 225a scattered throughout the parish ranging from the immediate east and
south east of the village street of East Lydford in the north, to the
village of Babcary in the south and bounded east and west by the River Cary
and the Fosse Way. No details other than acreages added to fields; strips in
east and west Fields. Numerous houses in East Lydford and Babcary villages
are marked. Marks 'old market road from Fodington' [ie continuation of Hook
Lane west of the River Cary].
This map was found with the bundle of title deeds for East Lydford Farm, but
clearly covers a greater area than the original purchase of 86a. and
probably represents the accumulated purchases of Caleb Dickinson.
Map stored in bundle of deeds. A rough field book catalogued as DD\DN/182
appears to relate to this map.
Stored in box in normal sequence of catalogues.
