Hello Kay Batt Cleverly,
I am led to believe that you are the architect of the very interesting
Cleverly Ancestry Page/GedCom that I have downloded and excerpted below, AWA
other illuminating information.. The top of your GedCom is headed by:
William CLEVERLEY 1778 md Mary DYKE 1780
Our Cleverlys are primarily dated in the 1600s, see the note directly
below. Is there a way we can get together to assist each other to connect
our Trees? It would seem that we should be able, because of the common
connections of the Easterlings and Widdringtons (and Vines), and you list
our 5G Gf Robert
Widdrington.
1 Henry EASTERLING - 1707
+Elizabeth VINES/ (VINNES)
2 Henry EASTERLING 1696/97 -
+Elizabeth WIDDRINGTON
2 Martha EASTERLING 1701 -
2 Elizabeth EASTERLING 1702/03 -
[We believe this should be Elizabeth DARE)
+Robert WIDDRINGTON
2 Mary EASTERLING 1706 -
I want to get this off. Please reply if interesting.
Thanks,
Barry Wetherington

Hi again Kay,
Mike Smolek has advised me that the Cleverlys were a bit more invoved
with our Line than I had previously recalled:
. . .
Barry, here is what I have on the early Calvert Co. Dares. You
will note that Nathaniel Dare (d1699) was married to Eliz. Cleve(r)ly who
was the daughter of Thomas Cleverly (d 1685)---so there is a definite
connection to the Cle(a)ve(r)lys. [Please note also that when I originally
transcribed the Robt.
Widdringtone will (d. 1722) that I thought that the reference was to Mrs.
Mary Dare. I am now sure that the reference should have been Miss Mary
Dare--our Elizabeth's [Robt Widdrington 1680/2-1722 md Elizabeth Dare]
unmarried sister.]
Hope this is of some use.
Mike
__________
Kay, Let us know what we can do to solidify the
Cleverly/Dare/Widdrington
connections.
Best,
Barry

Hi Kay,
Did you ever reply? They say memory is the 2d thing to go. If not, and
if you just didn't want to reply, no prob. I won't bother you anymore. But
this is also copied to my List members interested in the Cleverly Gen.
Thanks,

Mike and Ray, and Jean,
If you have already seen this, please excuse and ignore, altho there are
some Cleverly websites below, perhaps for after the England trip.

Barry,
I am really enjoying the stream of information that is coming through on
the Dare family. I am also going to copy this email to Mike Smolek since so
much of the information came from Mike's research and just plain old hard
work. I do have some concerns regarding the information that I am seeing
but choose to contact Mike and yourself directly rather than raise issues to
the group as a whole. Most of the questions are as much of myself as they
are of you two. The concerns are:
1. The arrival date of 1670 is being used for James Dare in the
material that has been posted this week. I have long used an arrival date
for James Dare of 1650, but in looking back at my information, I do not have
an acceptable reference for the arrival of James Dare into Virginia. Do
either of you have the record or reference of when James Dare actually
arrived in Virginia? Also, James Dare has always been assumed as the father
of Nathaniel who died in 1699 because if not James, then who (rule of
proximity). I do not have any records for James Dare other than his arrival
date and that was by transfer from someone else. Do either of you have any
additional information on James Dare? An arrival date of 1650 makes the
possibility of James being the father of Nathaniel quite reasonable but an
arrival date of 1670 would mean that Nathaniel would have had to have come
with James as an adult or alone as an adult in order for Nathaniel to have
likely fathered children before 1680 (I will discuss this issue later). It
would seem to me that an arrival date of 1670 for James Dare would force us
to seriously reevaluate the probable relationship between James Dare and
Nathaniel Dare d 1699 (possibly brothers rather than father - son).
2. Who was the mother of the children of Nathaniel Dare d 1699? Thanks
to Mike's good work, there is no doubt that Nathaniel Dare was married to
Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes before 27 August, 1684. The real question
becomes, how much before. A reference states "that by 27 August 1684,
Elizabeth Binkes was the wife of Nathaniel Dare". The record implies to me
that the marriage of Nathaniel Dare and Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes had
probably not occurred a long time prior to 27 August 1684. The question
becomes important because it appears to me that at least two and likely
three of the children of Nathaniel Dare died 1699 were likely born before
1684. It could really help to know the last record of Thomas Binkes while
he was still alive. Of course (to my knowledge), there are no recorded
dates of birth for the children of Nathaniel Dare d 1699 (Nathaniel d 1742,
Elizabeth Dare Witherington, Amy Dare Martin Hennington Battson, and Mary
Dare). However, the dates can be realistically estimated (with some range
of error) from other known dates.
The first rough source of the birth of Nathaniel Dare (d 1742) is
through his daughter Aletha. Aletha was married to Walter Smith who was
born in about 1693. In Robert Witherington's 1722 Will, he trusted the care
of his daughter Dorcas to Walter Smith and his wife Aletha Dare. We do not
know how long prior to Robert Widderington's death in 1722 that the Will was
actually written. He must have viewed Walter Smith and Aletha as a stable
established couple rather than brand new newly weds if he was going to trust
them with the care of his daughter Dorcas. Robert did have other choices.
It seems very likely that Walter Smith and Aletha were married prior to 1720
given both the 1722 Will of Robert Witherington and the age of Walter Smith
ba 1693. If Walter and Aletha were married prior to 1720, then it is likely
that Aletha was born by if not before 1700. If we subtract off another
twenty years or so, it would appear that Nathaniel Dare d 1742 was likely
born about or before 1680. I realize that younger marriages and resultant
children could occur but these are about average even for the era in
question.
Gideon Dare was believed to be the third born child of Nathaniel
Dare. Gideon Dare married Susanna Parker the daughter of George Parker and
Susanna Parrot. Susanna Parker was christened on 13 January 1700/01 in
Christ's Church in Calvert County, Maryland. Gideon Dare and Susanna Parker
show to have two sons born prior to 1725 which indicates that Gideon and
Susanna were married by about 1720. Gideon was likely as old or older
than Susanna. It seems reasonable to assume that Gideon
Dare was born on or before 1700 also. It appears that at least three of the
children of Nathaniel Dare (d 1742) were born on or before 1700 (Aletha,
Nathaniel Jr and Gideon). With three children likely born by or before
1700, it seems quite likely that Nathaniel Dare (d 1742) was born before
1680. I believe that Mrs Gower's guess of 1678 for Nathaniel Dare d 1742 is
reasonable and I would personally guess that he
was born even earlier than 1678 rather than later than 1678. This indicates
to me that Nathaniel Dare d 1742 is likely the son of Nathaniel d 1699 and a
first wife unknown.
Mike, we have discussed the likely age of Amy Dare Martin Hennington
Battson before. We know that Amy Dare had outlived her third husband by
1711. Amy had a son James by her first husband ____ Martin and two
daughters Ann and Amy Hennington by her second marriage. James Martin was
not of age when Amy's will was written in 1711 because she trusted his care
to Mrs Sarah Hance until he became 21 years of age. What could really help
here is to find the first record of James Martin and subtract 21 years
giving his approximate date of birth. Even without a record on James
Martin, it seems very safe to assume that Amy Dare was married well before
1700 and likely born prior to 1680. This would indicate to me that Amy is
likely the daughter of Nathaniel d 1699 and a first wife unknown.
Elizabeth Dare who married Robert Witherington is tougher to age.
Elizabeth Dare Witherington apparently died in about 1719 which was about
the same time that Amy Dare died (1720). Was Elizabeth about the same age
as Amy? Elizabeth apparently had five surviving children that were still
underage in 1722 when Robert Witherington's will was probated. The tone of
the Will makes it sound like Solomon Witherinton is almost of age in 1822.
Robert and Elizabeth Dare Witherington's oldest daughter Elizabeth is
already married to Henry Easterling. This indicates to me that Solomon and
Elizabeth Witherington were both likely born by or before about 1705. It
appears that Elizabeth Dare and Robert Witherington were married about or
shortly after 1700 based on the approximate age of their two older children.
This would make Elizabeth likely born after 1680 but was she born after
1684? The mother of Elizabeth Dare would appear to be somewhat borderline.
My personal opinion is that Elizabeth was born before 1684 and that she is
the youngest daughter of Nathaniel Dare d 1699 and his first wife unknown.
Almost nothing is known of Mary Dare the likely daughter of
Nathaniel Dare d 1699. Her existence seems to be established in Amy Dare
Battson's will by the clause that reads "2 daughters, Ann Hennington and Amy
and their hrs (heirs), lands belonging testator and 2 sisters
____;". She could be reaffirmed in Robert Witherington's 1722 will when
Robert Witherington states "Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary
Widdringtone ------- and do appoint her Aunt Mrs. Mary Dare to be her
Guardian". The Aunt Mary Dare could be the wife of Nathaniel Dare d 1742
who appears most likely to be Mary Witherington, sister of Robert
Witherington. If Mary Dare, wife of Nathaniel Dare d 1742 is Robert
Witherington's sister, then she would be a blood Aunt. Also, a Mary Dare
who was the sister of Elizabeth Dare would also be a blood Aunt. Mary Dare
the sister of Elizabeth Dare would still have to be unmarried and the term
Mrs was used. However, it is my understanding that the Term "Mrs" was also
applied to unmarried spinsters such as Mary Dare the sister of Elizabeth
Dare could have been. It seems much more likely that Robert Witherington
is referring to his sister Mary Witherington
Dare when he appoints her Aunt Mrs Mary Dare as a guardian. All of this
has little to do with the age of Mary Dare, sister of Amy Dare. It appears
to me that Mary Dare stands the best chance of being the daughter of
Nathaniel Dare d 1699 and Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes Dare.
3. The maiden name of Mary (wife of Nathaniel d 1742) has been the
source of considerable speculation. One source has Mary as Mary Cleverly
even though Nathaniel Dare (died 1699) was known to have married Elizabeth
Cleverly Binkes. If Nathaniel d 1742 was not the son of Elizabeth Cleverly
Binkes, then Cleverly is still a possible source of Mary's maiden name.
Mary would have to be the younger sister of
Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes Dare (Daughter of Thomas Cleverly) and would be
dependent on Elizabeth not being the mother of Nathaniel Dare d 1742.
The interpretation of the 1722 will of Robert Witherington creates
the real possibility that Mary is Mary Witherington, sister of Robert
Witherington. Another recent possibility has emerged indicating that Mary
may be Mary Battson, sister to Edward Battson who was the third husband of
Amy Dare (sister of Nathaniel Dare who died 1742). I would speculate that
Mary's maiden name is most likely Mary Witherington based on the 1722 Will
of Robert Witherington which appears to be the most reliable document
discovered to date.
Barry and Mike, I am going to copy in the family sheet that I am currently
maintaining on the Dares. It reflects my opinion of the items that I have
discussed here. I would very much appreciate any comments that either of
you might have. I will also send the family sheet as an attached file which
will better maintain formatting. Thanks for listening.

Descendants of James Dare
First Generation
1. James1 Dare (unproven). Born unknown, married unknown, died after
1650 likely in Calvert County, MD. The children of James Dare and unknown:
1. Nathaniel Dare d 1699
Second Generation
2. Nathaniel2 Dare (James1). Nathaniel Dare was born date unknown
likely in Calvert County, MD, married (1) unknown, married (2) Elizabeth
Cleverly Binkes (the widow of Thomas Binkes) sometime before August 27,
1784. The likely children of Nathaniel Dare and wife unknown are:
1. Nathaniel Dare Ba.. 1678, married Mary (??? - Possibly also
Cleverly), died before July 14, 1742 (my ancestor).
2. Amy Dare likely born before 1684, married (1) ____ Martin,
married (2) _____ Hennington, married (3) Edward Battson, died in 1720. Amy
apparently prepared her will in 1711 after the death of Edward Battson,
third husband of Amy Dare.
3. Elizabeth Dare likely born before 1684, married Robert
Witherton (Wetherington, etc.), died about 1719 in Calvert County, MD.
4. Mary Dare born either before or after 1684 (if born after
1684, she is the daughter of Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes), does not appear to
have ever married, died after 1722. Possibly the Aunt Mary Dare mentioned
in the 1722 will of Robert Witherington.
Children of Nathaniel Dare and Elizabeth Cleverly Binkes are:
1. Possibly Mary above.
Third Generation
3. Nathaniel Dare (Nathaniel2, James1). Nathaniel Dare was born about
1678 in Calvert County, MD, married Mary (???), died before 14 July 1742 in
Calvert County, MD. Mary died between 7 June 1748 and the date of probate
which was 17 December 1748.
The
interpretation of the 1722 will of Robert Witherington creates the real
possibility that Mary is Mary Witherington, sister of Robert Witherington.
A recent possibility has emerged indicating that Mary may be Mary Battson,
sister to Edward Battson who was the third husband of Amy Dare (sister of
Nathaniel Dare who died 1742). The author would speculate that Mary's
maiden name is most likely Mary Witherington but that assumption is still
unproven. Regardless of Mary's maiden name, the children of Nathaniel Dare
and Mary (???) are:
1. Aletha Dare Ba. 1698, married (1) Walter Smith (who died in
1748) prior to 1720, married (2) Rev. George Cooke, died 30 January 1753.
Aletha died under questionable circumstances. Reverend Cooke was tried for
her death but was acquitted.
2. Nathaniel Dare Jr. Ba. 1700 in Calvert County, MD, married
Ann Tongue 27 August 1747 in St James Parrish, Ann Arundel County, MD., died
between will written 13 November 1763 and the probate of his will on 17
January 1764.
3. Gideon Dare Ba. 1701 in Calvert County, MD, married Susanna
Parker, daughter of George Parker and Susanna Parrott, died between date of
will 15 December 1756 and will probate on 13 July 1757 (my ancestor).
4. Ann Dare born 1703, married unknown, died unknown. (Mrs
Gower has this Ann married to Thomas Funge but the Ann Dare who married
Thomas Funge was the daughter of Nathaniel Dare Ba. 1700 (See will of
Nathaniel Ba. 1700 whose will was probated 17 January 1764).
5. Richard Dare Ba. 1705 in Calvert County, MD, married
unknown, died unknown.
6. Cleverly Dare born after 1705, married unknown, died
unknown.
7. Kezie Dare born after 1705, married (???) Brome, died
unknown.
On the 1733 Calvert County, MD tax list, we find Henry Brome, John Brome
Sr., John Brome Jr., and Thomas Brome. We can likely exclude John Brome Sr.
as the husband of Kezie Dare. Kezie is likely married to one of the other
three.
8. Diannah Dare born after 1705, married Charles Clagett, died
before 1748. Charles Clagett witnessed the will of Nathaniel Dare who died
in 1742.
Fourth Generation
4. Gideon Dare (Nathaniel3, Nathaniel2, James1). Gideon Dare was Ba.
1701 in Calvert County, MD, married Susanna Parker, died between date of
will 15 December 1756 and date of probate 13 July 1757. Susanna Parker was
born 13 January 1700/01, christened in Christ's Church, Calvert County, MD,
died 6 December 1744 in Calvert County, MD. The children of Gideon Dare and
Susanna Parker are:
1. Nathaniel Dare (III) born before 1725 in Calvert County, MD,
married unknown, and died unknown.
2. John Dare Ba. 1725 in Calvert County, MD, married Catharine
Thomas about 1750 in either Calvert County, MD or Orange County, VA, died
before estate probate on 25 October 1781 in Orange County, VA (my ancestor).
The link between John Dare in Orange County, VA and the John Dare mentioned
in Gideon Dare's will is still unproven. From this John Dare on to the
present can be proven.
3. Diana Dare Ba. 1725 in Calvert County, MD, married unknown,
died unknown.
4. Elizabeth Dare Ba. 1725 in Calvert County, MD, married
unknown, died unknown.
5. Gideon Dare Jr. Ba. 1727 in Calvert County, MD, married
unknown, died unknown.
6. Aletha Dare Ba. 1727 in Calvert County, MD, married unknown,
died unknown.
7. Samuel Dare Ba. 1735 in Calvert County, MD, married unknown,
died unknown.
8. Sarah Dare Ba. 1737 in Calvert County, MD, married unknown,
died unknown.
9. Susannah Dare Ba. 1739 in Calvert County, MD, married John
(or James) Sommerville on 5 August 1755. John Sommerville was referred to
as Captain Sommerville. In Gideon Dare's will probated 13 July 1757, he
mentions a granddaughter Susannah Johnson and a Grandson John Sommerville.
10. Mary Dare Ba. 1740 in Calvert County, MD, married (???)
Ireland by date of Gideon's will dated 15 December, 1756, died unknown. The
only Irelands on the 1733 Calvert County, MD tax list were Thomas Ireland Sr
and Thomas Ireland Jr. Mary likely married the son of one of these two men.
11. Thomas Cleverly Dare Ba. 1741 in Calvert County, MD ,
married unknown, died unknown.
12. William Dare born 1743 in Calvert County, MD, married
unknown, died unknown.
13. Parrott Dare born date unknown, married unknown, died
unknown.

Subject: Dare Family History by Dave Bates
Thanks for the tips! I may try that! And for your assurance. Though I
have no plans to ever try to make money with it - it wouldn't be fun that
way! But that would keep others from trying to make money from it, I guess.
Also I have promised it to the local Historical societies and plan to keep
updating the internet and sending copies to Dares for free. I tried to
compact it, but either it malfunctioned or something, because the compact
file was still 90MB! So hope you can handle it larger!
A couple of notes:
I disagree with Gen/FTM standards on one issue - the labeling and reporting
of married women with missing maiden names. Reports look stupid with
literally thousands of ? or ... and no one can tell what family they
married. TMG has a more intelligent way of reporting - but both TMG and FTM
still search the internet without the married name - which is stupid. So I
have utilized FTM's automatic searches by listing married women as Jane ...
Smith with Smith being the married name, so census records can be located
and also so that reports like kinship reports, associate the person with the
right family!
I am not sure what Maryland Dares I have - the file is so big I haven't
dared gen an "all in one tree" to see if there is another huge branch. Let
me know if they are. I was thinking that should be maintained separately
for now anyway - these trees are pretty hard to process already! Maybe in
the future the computer hardware will catch up with our volume & processing
requirements?
Can you also send me your database? I agree it would be good for a
research aid. Especially as both Dare families headed west and ya never
know which they belong to sometimes!
. . . . .
Have you had access to 'The Dare Family History' by Wm Harry Montgomery,
1939 Lyme Eng, etc., ref to Wm Dare 1605? but ~ opening Aug 1440 w/ Mayor Wm
Dare/ Vicar of Lyme Regis. Could you send me a draft of your work - I might
be able to offer a few ideas.
==================
A quick note - I can endorse you to a free Google Gmail.com email
address if you wish - store 1 GB online. You might still be able to get
Dave(a)gmail.com, or similar.
More later, Barry
FYI, The Burgess piece also mentions Cleverly Witherington on 1779 tax list
for Dobbs Co, NC, and other discussion at p468, including Cleverly
Witherington as s/o John W.

FOR FURTHER RESEARCH
Civil War Soldiers
The original service records of Union and Confederate Civil War Soldiers and
the pension records of Union veterans are maintained at the National
Archives Building in Washington, DC, where they are available for research
to anyone at least age 16.
The records exist in their originally created form or on microfilm. You can
request searches of those records by using the NATF forms 85 and 86 (see
right). The military service records and pension files are separate series of
records and must be requested on separate forms (Form 86 for military
service records and Form 85 for pension files). For example, if you need
both the service record and the pension file for one particular veteran who
fought for the Union, you need to complete two NATF Forms, 86 and 85.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), www.nara.gov, does
not have custody of Confederate soldier pension files. For additional
information regarding Confederate pension files, please contact the State
Archives for the state from which the veteran served. For a successful
search of the records, certain specific information is required, including:
Full name, state in which he served, and branch of military. You must also
indicate the side on which he fought, Union or Confederate. If a file is
found for the veteran in question, NARA will supply copies of documents that
provide pertinent information about the veteran and his family. Instructions
on the NATF Forms 85 and 86 explain the payment procedure for copies.
Also, Bertram Hawthorne Groene's "Tracing Your Civil War Ancestor"
(Winston-Salem, N.C.: John F. Blair, 1973) is an easy-to-read guide to
sources of information on Civil War soldiers.
Civil War Regiments
There are four publications which offer more information on Civil War
regiments. Bertram Groene's "Tracing Your Civil War Ancestor" discusses
several different sources on Civil War regiments. Charles E. Dornbusch's
four volumes "Military Bibliography of the Civil War" contains information
on thousands of Civil War publications. To discover more information on
Union regimental histories one should first look at Frederick Dyer's "A
Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" which is published by Morningside
Press. For Confederate regimental histories, Joseph H. Crute, Jr. and
Stewart Sifakis separately compiled Confederate unit histories: Crute's
"Units of the Confederate Army" which is published by Olde Soldier Books,
Inc., 18779 B North Frederick Rd., Gaithersburg, Maryland, 20879; and
Sifakis'"A Compendium of the Confederate Armies" (11 vol.) which is
published by Facts on File, 460 Park Avenue South, New York, New York,
10016.
As for archives, the National Archives in Washington, D.C. has a wealth of
information on Civil War regiments in the Records of the Adjutant General's
Office, 1780s-1917, Record Group 94. This record groups consists of 82
linear feet of bound records and 56 linear feet of unbound records. The
Army's Military History Institute in Carlisle, Pennsylvania also contains
several thousand reference bibliographies on regiments.
And finally, one may uncover information by visiting or writing to any one
of the National Park Service's battlefield sites. The rangers offer
information through talks, walks, films, dioramas, maps, and in many cases
they have access to extensive research libraries at the parks.
