Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi ALL,
Pat has an excellent question - I only hope my answer doesn't arrive too
early in the day for her. (:-o) [see below]
For the Gendex database at: http://www.gendex.com &
http://www.gendex.com:8080/
specifically for this reply:
http://www.gendex.com:8080/display?page=individuals&surname=WETHERINGTON
You can contact the contributors by clicking on the Link on the right side of
the Lists - in this case, for the first listed Wetherington at:
http://www.gendex.com:8080/display?page=individuals&surname=WETHERINGTON&...
which would be:
GenCircles-sier
on the line:
/Wetherington/ (i) 16 May 1882 1882 GenCircles-sier
which would reveal the Contributor to be: Author: Cindy McDonnell (see below)
who can be contacted at:
"Contact: http://www.gencircles.com/users/sierrasgrandma"
They won't all be that clear but at least it is a start. And such a contact
might not be an original 'source,' perhaps borrowing from someone else. These
are just directional clues.

Progress on Vines DNA project

--- "RECENTLY I HAD A DNA TEST FOR GENEALOGY PURPOSES AND WITH MY RESULTS THE
TESTING COMPANY INFORMED ME THAT I HAD AN EXACT MATCH WITH MR SAMUEL MINGIA OF
NORTH CAROLINA." ---
The following note to a newspaper in North Carolina will serve to report
progress on the Vines and variants DNA
project.
My surname is Vines. I live in Australia, a descendant of an old family in North
Wiltshire, UK. Recently I had a DNA test for genealogy purposes and with my
results the testing company informed
me that I had an exact match with Mr Samuel Mingia of North Carolina. An
internet search of the 1880 US census
showed that both names, though not very common, occurred in several counties of
NC. I contacted Mrs Jo Burch, the
sister of Sam Mingia, who had organised her brothers test and learned that her
family ancestors had lived for
a long time in America, much of the 1800s in Halifax county.
There seemed to be many Vines in Edgecombe and other nearby counties, dating
back to around time of the Revolution
so it seems reasonable to wonder if a Vines fathered child was accepted into the
Mingia family at some time,
assuming of course that Vines of NC have the same DNA as me. Jo also showed that
some mystery exists at one point
in her pedigree documentation.
For clarity I should say that the Y chromosome DNA of males is transferred with
little if any change from father to
son and is very stable over dozens of generations. As surnames are also
inherited from the father this makes it a
reliable element to trace family name lineage, but allowing for name change,
adoption and immaculate conception!
To state simply: I have Wiltshire Vines DNA; so does Sam. Is this a coincidence
or do NC Vines also have Wilts DNA?
Did the Vines migrant of 1600s or 1700s come from Wiltshire? Is there not truth
in the Confucius adage "Propinquity
is basis for hanky panky?"
I have no knowledge of any early Vines migration to America except for Richard
Vines of Devon who was governor of
Maine in early 1600s. He was agent for Sir Ferdinando Gorges who received the
settlement grant in that area from
King James or Charles, until about 1643 when it was challenged under the
Cromwellian government. He resigned and
settled in Barbados where he died in 1651. Perhaps his descendants moved to
America.
I have a Vines DNA project under way, with the object of reconnecting all Vines
to their roots in England. I would
like to hear from any one who can contribute to the history of Vines people in
development of North America. My web
page is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vinesfamhist/index.html
and my mailing address is: Fred Vines, 14 Harrington Cres., Bawley Point 2539,
Australia.

To follow up the earlier answer to Marc, here is the on-topic paragraph from the
Rice site. Go there:
http://www.widomaker.com/~gwk/era/haplotype.htm
for other informative links. Apparently, we seek to recontruct the: 'genetic
"fingerprint" or haplotype of our immigrant ancestor.'
The Edmund Rice (1638) Association has a project underway seeking to discover
the ancestors of Edmund Rice and other Rice and Royce families. (There was a
tendency in past centuries to regard these two spellings as interchangeable.)
Y-chromosome DNA analysis offers exciting opportunities to learn more about
early family roots. With the assistance of three genetics testing labs, we
compared the DNA of many descendants of Edmund Rice of Sudbury and Marlborough
and reconstructed the genetic "fingerprint" or haplotype of our immigrant
ancestor (see Table 1). For the details of how we did this, see the article
entitled "How We Obtained the Rice Haplotype" in our newsletter.

| Hi Marc, Good Questions:
|
| [Q: Does it matter if you have descended via mothers or fathers? Does your
| pedigree from Robert Witherington have to be all mothers or all fathers or can
| it be a mixture?]
|
| Been awhile.
|
| Getting dna is a medical exercise. But finding common dna establishes
common
| ancestors OR lack of common dna establishes lack of common ancestors. So we
| apparently assume that if 10 Wtons are tested and 9 have the 'common' dna
| traits, then the 10th one is from another line. If we had Robt's dna, we could
| determine exactly if anyone was a descendant of Robt. Even the Mitachondrial
| (sp?) dna directly from the UK mummy found in ice allowed establishment of an
| exact descendant after 5,000 yrs.
|
| Each descendant carries half the dna from each parent. There are different
| kinds of dna - some more useful for female linkage - other better for male
| linkage.
|
| If I'm from Robt, then your dna must match mine in relevant detail. If we
| attempt to match just 2 people, then all we know is whether we are in the same
| or related Line, or not - not which line until we get more samples. And I'm
way
| above my head now.
|
| The Rice dna stuff should answer many ques.
