Let's start a discussion on DNA and DNA Testing on this mail list. We
need some more samples of various Clevenger lines.. We have a good
start. but we need a LOT MORE samples. The link below will take you to
the "Results" page and from there you can go to the "Patriarchs" page.
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/clevenger/results.html
The genetics of the project is easy to understand. Only the
Y-chromosome DNA is tested and a son gets his Y-chromosome from his
father. In our society the surname follows the father's line and so the
surname follows the Y-chromosome..
Our manner of proof of ancestry follows the legal situation, not the
biological situation, so adopted children usually carry the surname of
their adopted father. In the case of children born out of wedlock, the
child usually carries the name of the mother. These are the possible
explanation when a DNA analysis does not follow the surname.
If you go to the "Recruitment" page, you will find more information, as
well as the pricing. Unfortunately, the pricing is a little on the
steep side, but those of us with an interest, but cannot provide a
cheek swab to be tested, can support the project in a monetary fashion.
Many of us can take our Clevenger line back to the 1780-1800 era with a
fair amount of confidence, but then it starts to get somewhat "iffy".
So let's name the various lines with the ancestor born in this time
frame that we are pretty sure about it. Thus, line C-1 would be
Benjamin's line and C-2 would be Edward's line. The Mills sample is
different. More on that one later. When we compare Ben's results with
the MIlls result, it shows that we need all 37 markers to show
relationships in the best fashion.
I think that I have finally found someone in my Sylvester line. Can
some of you other Clevenger genealogists find someone to provide a check
swab to represent your line and help line up the financial support?
Comments? Questions? I'll be glad to keep the ball rolling. For those
who don't know, I am a retired biology prof and I probably taught
genetics more frequently than any other course. That is probably part
of the reason that I am a total genealogy nut. <G> More later.
Right now there are 86 members on this list, can you recruit others to
increase our discussion base?
Sarah Clevenger, Ph.D.
I would like some help on finding my fathers father--he was born in Ray
County, Mo in 1932--he was gave away to the Mills family. His birth mom he found
when he was in his 20's she was Georgia Holtzclaw--she would not tell him
who his birth father was--Thank God for DNA My dad has rare viking markers
that only match a Clevenger who lives in Illinois whose cousin is 90 years old
and a licenced geneaolgist. He said my dad is a direct Clevenger of the
Clevengers of Ray County, MO.
So would some of the Clevengers please have their DNA done from Missiouri.
My Dad is 75 still going strong--I believe it's possible for him to have
siblings by his birth father,
Please Help

CANDEE:
Let me have ypur address when you get to Cailifornia. I will be retiring in Jan 2008.
I think this Brockton Clevenger is probably the Braxton Clevenger, who according to some was a son of a Reuben Clevenger. He went from IL to Taney County, MO.
As far as John William Cleavenger, here is what I have on him.
He was David Cleavenger's grandson, and a brother to my Miner Cleavenger, s/o Samuel & Margaret.
Regards,
Ron
5c.3) John William CLEAVENGER, a s/o Samuel & Eliza Jane (Randall) Cleavenger, was born on 27 Mar 1842, in Wood County, VA, and was married45 by Squire McConnell on 13 Dec 1867, in Genesco, Henry County, IL, to Amanda Maude Mariah ROGERS, who was born on 25 Jul 1848, in Henry County, Il, a d/o Ross & Senna (Whitehead) Rodgers.
John William Cleavenger operated a livery with his brother Minor and was in Civil War with Minor in an Illinois unit (Company B, 9th Illinois Calvary)46. John William Cleavenger, living in Munson, IL, a private, enlisted at Springfield, IL, on 1 Oct 1861, for three years; however, he was mustered out on 25 Jun 1862; he re-enlisted on 29 Feb 1864, as a private and living in Osceo, IL; he was a teamster; he weighed 130 pounds, was six feet tall, had blue eyes and brown hair, and was of light complexion; he was discharged as a sergeant at Selma, AL, on 31 Oct 186547. This unit fought in the following battles48:
Battle at Cotton Plant, Arkansas on 17 May 1862
Battle on 12 June 1862
Battle at Tishenmingo Creek on 10 June 1864
Battle at Fish Creek, Mississippi on 11 June 1864
Battle at Guntown, Mississippi on 11 June 1864
Battle at Guntown, Mississippi on 15 June 1864
Battle at Tupelo, Mississippi on 15 July 1864
Battle on 16 July 1864
Battle on 18 July 1864
Battle at Hurricane Center on 13 August 1864
Battle at Oxford, Mississippi on 13 August 1864
Battle at Near Savannah, Tennessee on 17 October 1864
Battle at Campbellville, Tennessee on 24 November 1864
They were listed in the 1870 Munson, Henry County, IL, census with John"s brother Minor living in their household. John was a farmer and Amanda was keeping house in this record. The surname was spelled Clevenger.
John William Cleavenger’s granddaughter, Sally French remembers that John had some infirmities related to his Civil War experience and further recalls him talking about how their company fashioned coverings for their feet from corn husks after their shoes were worn out49. John Cleavenger died on 2 Mar 1917, at his home in Hanover, Washington County, KS, and was buried three days later, in Hanover, KS, in the Hanover City Cemetery. Amanda was a weaver and made carpets; she loved gardening; her family settled near Hiawatha, KS, and when her parents would butcher animals, they would give some of the meat to the Indians, who lived in Reserve, KS, an Indian Reservation50.
Amanda Maude/Mariah (Rogers) Cleavenger died at her home on 27 Mar 1935, in Hanover, KS, and was buried three days later, in Hanover, KS, in the Hanover Cemetery. The 1900 Washington County (KS) Census says John was born in Illinois; however, the 1910 Washington County (KS) Census says he was born in West Virginia (actually Virginia). In the 1900 Census, she is listed as Manda M. and her children's birth records give her name as "Maude"; her granddaughter says her name was "Mariah". She further remembers her talking about how they came to Hiawatha, KS, in a covered wagon, with her father, who became a farmer/rancher; they also lived on an Indian Reserve, and when her father would butcher cattle, the Indians would come to get the entrils from him. Her tombstone lists her as Amanda M. Cleavenger. Amanda M. Cleavenger's obituary reads51:
"Amanda M. Cleavenger (nee Rogers) was born in Henry County,
IL, on July 25, 1848, and died in Hanover, Kansas, on March 27, 1935,
at the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 2 days. She was united in marriage
to J. W. Cleavenger in 1868, with whom she shared the joys and sorrows
of life until 1917, when he died.
To this union 4 children were born. Mrs. Bertha Doebele of
Hanover, Kansas, W. D. Cleavenger of Marysville, Kansas, Dan Cleavenger
of Kansas City, Mo., and Geo. Cleavenger of Wray, Colorado. She also
leaves one sister, Mrs. Sude Huglett of Seattle, Wash., and one brother,
Charles Rogers of Wheeler, Calif. There are 14 grandchildren and 2
great grand children.
Mrs. Cleavenger lived in this community for the past 45 years, so was well known and highly respected by all who knew her. Funeral
services were conducted from the Evangelical church by the pastor,
Rev. F. E. Wendland, and interment was made in the Hanover cemetery."

I haven't checked Griffiths book. I'm new at this! Is it still in print? If
so, how can it be purchased?
Best wishes,

I am looking for documentation on John Clevenger, father of George Clevenger.
John Clevenger was born between 1676 and 1678 and was wondering if anyone has
found his tombstone. He lived in Yonkers, NY and died somewhere in New
Jersey, either Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, Webster County, or in Burlington County.
His mother was Sarah Hadden and his father was George Clevenger, one of the
earliest Clevengers mentioned in the Americas. Sarah Hadden Clevenger had
strong ties to Yonkers.
Has anyone found George's will?
Has anyone found John's will?
Has anyone found either one of these men's tombstone?
Is there any information on the wife of John Clevenger. Mary .....? All I can
find is that she was from New Jersey. Does anyone know why John Clevenger
moved out of New York and into New Jersey?
