GOVERNMENT ACCESS
Requesting ancestors' immigration records from the
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS;
formerly called Immigration and Naturalization
Services) may soon get easier. The April 20 Federal
Register, the government publication that records
goings-on in federal agencies, printed USCIS' proposal
for a program to handle your genealogy-related
requests for historical naturalization, alien registration
and other immigration records.
Currently, USCIS lumps those genealogical inquiries--
which number about 10,000 per year--with other
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, creating a
huge backlog. FOIA restrictions rarely apply to USCIS'
historical records, anyway, because the subjects of the
old documents usually are deceased.
USCIS estimates the new genealogy program would
handle 26,000 requests per year, with fees for
searching indexes and copying records such as:
* Naturalization Certificate Files (C-files) dated
Sept. 27, 1906, to April 1, 1956, containing
information related to applications for citizenship
* Alien Registration Forms (AR-2) completed by aliens
age 14 and older who lived in or entered the United
States between Aug. 1, 1940, and March 31, 1944
* Visa Files, dated July 1, 1924, to March 31, 1944,
which contain information on immigrants admitted for
permanent residence under the Immigration Act of
1924
* Registry Files, dated March 2, 1929, to March 31,
1944, containing information on immigrants who
entered the United States before July 1, 1924, whose
original arrival records were lost
* A-files, case files containing all an individual's
immigration records since April 1, 1944 (A-files dating
before May 1, 1951, would be handled as FOIA
requests)
The proposal is open for public comment until June 19.

I think your posting on the origin of Clevenger is great. Clevenger is my maiden name. I have always wondered what the origin of my last name meant. My Family I think originates from the Texarkana,Texas/Arkansas/ New boston Texas area, at least thats what I have been told. Well anyways just wanted to say thanks for your info
I am searching for any information on Robert and Theodosia (Clevenger) Beatty who were married in 1801 in Frederick Co., VA. What were their childrens names, and who did their children marry? Did they have a son, Robert, who married Jane Crouse? I believe her parents were Joseph and Mary (Smith) Clevenger of Shenandoah Co., VA.
Any information at all on this family would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon Wilcox

I have an original postcard photograph of “Gladys (mother), Jack and Isabel Clevenger”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1915, and was mailed from Humphreys (Sullivan Co.) Missouri. Gladys looks about age 25, Jack about age 2 or 3, and Isabel as an infant. The card was addressed to and mailed to Mrs. Clara Wills Sims of Lucerne, MO, and bears a 1 cent postage stamp.
I found the family in the 102- census for Rocky Ford, Otero Co., CA. Father was James A., age 24, born MO; mother Gladys A., age 28, born MO. Son John C., age 6, born Kansas, and Martha I., age 5, born MO.
Email me at margerice(a)prodigy.net if you are related to this Clevenger family.

Thomas H. Clevenger, whose father was co-owner of historic Clevenger
Brothers Glass Factory of Clayton, celebrated his 100th birthday on
Friday.
Figure on Tom celebrating quite a few more. He says he's going to live
"until the Eagles win the Super Bowl." That might take awhile.
Clevenger credits his longevity with never having smoked nor drank
and, forgive him, ladies, remaining a bachelor all his life.
A 1924 graduate of Clayton High School, Clevenger worked in the
Gloucester County clerk's office in Woodbury, was a Clayton mail
carrier, and also was a maintenance man in the Glassboro State College
(Rowan University) gymnasium.
He was in the Army Air Force during World War II, serving in Guam for
13 months. After the war, he flew over Japan and saw the destruction
of the atom bomb on Hiroshima.
He has enjoyed traveling, having vacationed in England, Scotland,
Ireland, France, and Iceland.
Tom is the oldest son of Thomas and Adeline Stiles Clevenger. His
father co-founded and co-owned Clevenger Brothers Glass Factory with
his brothers, Reno and Allie.
Clevenger's hand-blown glass was sold throughout the United States,
some of it to Hollywood movie studios. Tom was watching a Baretta
segment on TV one night when he spotted a sign in a store window,
"Clevenger Glass." He also remembers Dupont and Carpenter family
members coming to Clayton from Delaware to buy Clevenger glass for
their homes.
Tom lives with his niece, Bonnie Vennell, in Clayton.
