Re your inquiry I suggest you consult my book, "Clevenger
Pioneers & Descendants", published in 1980 and available in or through
many libraries, for Clevenger origins both before and after Tenn. I could
not find your Calvin or Ira Clevenger in it, however. The book was sold
out many years ago but a reprint in slightly different format is
available from Sarah Clevenger, Ph.D at
INTERNET:sclevenger@iquest.net
Also consult "The Clevenger Families of Ray County, Missouri" by Barbara
Profitt, Carol Proffitt, M. Virginia Mills, 1991, available from Barbara
Proffitt, Rt.2, Box 259a, Richmond, MO 64085.
Good luck, George
Thanks for your latest. I still hope for sources and documentation on
that first generation, of course. Your 12 generations equal my 11. I
figure we are 7th cousins once removed. Agree? Our common ancestor was

1719) who mar. Hannah Baker in NJ. George

Hello, my name is Rae Ellyn (Clevenger) Howard, I have been trying very hard
to find out information about my family. I do not have hardly anything to go
on, so I am hoping that you may be able to send me in the right direction.
May I ad, I know NOTHING about family research, I am totally GREEN at this
stuff, so as you can see, I need all the help and guidance I can get?
The only information I know is:
My father's name was Calvin Edsel Clevenger, he was born on May 8, not sure
of the year but I think it was approx. the early 1920's, he was from Iowa,
his father's name was Ira Clevenger, I do not know his mother's name, he had
one sister named Esther, brothers:
Eskie, Floyd, Ivan I was told many years ago that my family
originated in Tenn.- Mo.- Iowa.
My father was in the Navy (as his brothers were) and stationed at Mare Island
Naval Base in Vallejo, California during the 1940's, he married my mother in
Northern California, her name was Cleo Inezze, I was born in Fairfield,
California on June 26, 1947.
My father passed away on March 10, 1980, in the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE. and
was buried in Hope, Kansas. If you can help me I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this email, Rae Ellyn -

I had written:
>I'm looking for any information about, especially the parents of, William H.

Laura Jane Peterson on 30 January 1859 in Kosciusko County, Indiana.

for Wayne

Thanks Sarah. I found that census and after adding William H. Clevenger
and the older siblings to the family, it matches the John and Nancy
Clevenger family of 1860 census in Kosciusko County, Indiana.
On the internet I looked for John Clevenger and wife Nancy. I found one
with wife, Nancy Shockley. Since Mary Shockly was in the 1850 Ohio
census I
feel this is a match - Mary must be a mother or aunt or ?
Jerry L. Clark mentioned a William H. Clevenger, age 9, living with
Mahlon Clevenger in 1850 census in Randolph Co., Indiana. From another
email, Jerry mentioned that this William H. is the son of Morgan
Clevenger and Rebecca Conner. Morgan and Mahlon are brothers.
John Clevenger, father of my William H. Clevenger, seems to be a 1st
cousin to Mahlon and Morgan Clevenger. Thanks to the folks submitting
information to WorldConnect, Ancestral File, IGI, etc. I have names and
places of the Clevengers for several generations.
Now to trace the Shockleys.
Thanks to all

Your message is most interesting to me as author of "Clevenger Pioneers &
Descendants" published in 1980. What source, documentation, etc., do you
have for the first John Clevenger (1633-1654+)?
For generations 2 & 3 you mention Webster Co., NY. There is no
such county; do you mean Westchester Co.?
What source, documentation, etc., do you have for Rachel
(1777-1824+) as a daughter of Thomas and Psyche Clevenger? The only one
of that era that I know of is Rachel born 24 July 1778, d/o Joseph and
Mary (Smith) Clevenger. See pp. 94-95 of my book.
Hope to hear from you. George

There are many, many William H. Clevengers. Don't forget that William Henry
Harrison was an early hero of us Hoosiers. So many people named their little
boys William Henry Harrison Clevenger or Willima Henry or William Harrison
Clevenger. I have one in my direct line.

Sarah Clevenger that wrote mess. on 9-17....is that Dr. Sarah Clevenger on
In. Oh I sure hope so. Would love to make contact with you again. Is it
you? Thanks for the reply...appreciate
Greetings
I'm looking for any information, especially the parents of, William H.
Clevenger born 24 February 1840 in Randolph County, Indiana (although
the 1860 has him born in Ohio). He married Laura Jane Peterson on 30
January 1859 in Kosciusko County, Indiana.
Perhaps his parents are John and Nancy Clevenger. In the 1860 census
for Wayne
Township (PO Warsaw) Kosciusko County, Indiana is William age 21, born
Ohio; Laura J. age 21 born Ohio; Harriet J. age 9/12, born Indiana.
Nearby is the household of John Clevenger, age 52, born Ohio. In the
household are Nancy Clevenger, age 50 born Kentucky, Andrew, 18 born
Indiana; John, age 15, born Indiana; Nancy, age 10, born Indiana.
William served in the Civil War, returned to Kosciusko County
for a few years, then about 1868 moved to Barry County,
Michigan; then Calhoun County, Michigan. He died 24 August 1922,
probably Los Angeles, California (where he moved after 1912).
Known children of William and Laura Clevenger are:
Harriet J. "Hattie", born 21 Nov. 1858 in Indiana
Nancy J, age 8 in 1870 census, born Indiana
Jennie, born 26 September 1866, Indiana (may be Nancy J. Jennie not in
1870 census but in 1880 census)
Ella M "Minnie", born 18 Mar 1868, Indiana or Michigan
Alice, born 6 Nov. 1971, Michigan
Lettie May "May" born 24 Cot 1873, Michigan
William Elmer, born 24 Aug. 1875, Michigan
Chester A., born 10 Feb. 1878, Michigan
