If William Riley Clevenger's application had been approved for Cherokee Citizenship he should be on the Dawes list or one of the other list for the Cherokee Nations, I have not been able to find him there . If someone out there can correct me on this please do, would love to have the correct information.

A friend who is not online has an elusive Clevenger ancestor. All she knows
is that Veva ???? married ?????? Clevenger, probably some time in the early
1870's, give or take a few years. They had a child, Mary, who may have had
the middle name of Francis(es). She would have been born in the 1870's(?). I
know there was a later Veva Clevenger, but don't know if she is this direct
line...does anyone know the linage of the later Veva? Also, does anyone know
if this is a nickname for another name, or a name itself. All this would have
probably taken place in Ray County, Missouri...except possibly the births of
Veva(1) and husband.
Any clues on this would be helpful. Does anyone have Ray County census
records from 1850 on that they could do a lookup on these families for me.
Thanks in advance for any info you can give me for my friend.

James Clevenger is a few households away.

Clevenger who was the son of James Clevenger (who married Lettie Hatcher in
Clay Co, MO in 1835) and grandson of Joshua Hatcher who was a Cherokee Indian

When and where did this elusive Veva Clevenger die? If this is known, you may
be able to obtain her heath certificate. Also what about the birth certificate
of one of Veva's kids?

Joshua Hatcher has been recognized as a Cherokee Inidan by blood. Go to MAIL
(NARA Archival Information Locator) and put in Clevenger or Hatcher to search
for. There is a petition for recognition as Cherokee by blood by William Riley
Clevenger who was the son of James Clevener who married Lettie Hatcher in Clay
Co, MO in 1835 and was the grandson of Joshua Hatcher who was a Cherokee Indian
by blood and born in NC. I don't have the URL, but you can probably get there.
You can get a copy of his application which as I remember has some "goodies" in
it.

I think Tabitha Leticia Hatcher's father name was Joshua Hatcher and was a Cherokee Indian. His grandson William Riley Clevenger made application for Cherokee citizenship, but I think was denied as Joshua had left the reservation fairly early--before the Trail of Tears. I obtained a copy of Wm R.'s application for National Archives, but not all of the file.

Thanks, Margaret, for Thomas and family. I am curious about Thomas being born
in DE. What is this based on? I think that we have to be "flexible" about
location in the Mason-Dixon line area. I spent eons looking for a PA Dutch
ancestor in Maryland where he said in 1850 he was born. but actually he lived
near Gettyburg, PA. The state line was uncertain until the M-D line was drawn.
However, DE might be a clue as to the father of Thomas.
It seems to me that it would "ideal" if Thomas, Sylvester (my ancestor) and
Syl's brother Samuel were all sons of Zachariah and children of the first,
unkown wife. As I remember it "fits" nicely, BUT so far NO proof AND the
younger batch of Zach's kids has Samuel Douglas. However, the older Samuel
would probably have left home by the time the younger one was born and Samuel
Douglas seems to be to be always called Samuel Douglas. I also hope that the
first wife was a sister of Mary Gaskill because the Gaskill line has a Salem
witch in it. Well, I can dream. If it were true, I could belong to Sons of a
Witch <G>.

Thomas Clevenger was born in DE and died in Mt. Holly, OH. Warren County,
OH. is where Thomas lived. He had land in other counties in OH, as well as
IN. My line is of Job Clevenger their second son, and Sarah Finley. They
only had one son, Benjamin Franklin Clevenger.
My problem is connecting the Warren County Clevengers. I feel Thomas,
Zachariah, and Sylvester are related, but how. Where do they go back to from
there? Who are the parents of Thomas? Siblings?

Here are my husband's direct-line Clevengers. He's one of those
"double-descendants." I'm going to start with Thomas Clevenger and Syche
Pittman, since I'm more comfortable with them than with what I have on
earlier generations.
Thomas Clevenger, b. abt 1740-1746, Monmouth Co., NJ; d. Feb 1810, Cocke
Co., TN; bur. Clevenger Cemetery, Cocke Co., TN; m. Syche Pittman, 1760,
NJ. She was b. abt 1743, Monmouth Co., NJ; d. 17 Aug 1847, Cocke Co., TN,
bur. Clevenger Cemetery, Cocke Co., TN.
My husband is descended from their daughter Else and their son Zachariah
(Zacharias). There were other children, but I think most of you have that
information. If not, I will help you if I can, although I am not a
Clevenger "expert."
Else Clevenger, b. 1770, Shenandoah Co., VA [alternate info.: b. abt 1772,
Cocke Co., TN]; d. abt 1845, Ray Co., MO; m. Reuben Allen, 29 Sep 1791,
Shenandoah Co., VA. One of their sons:
Isaac Allen, b. 26 Oct 1796, Shenandoah Co., VA [alternate info.: b. same
date, Cocke Co., TN]; d. 1 Nov 1859, Ray Co., MO; b. Dillon Cemetery,
Orrick, Ray Co., MO.
then--
Zechariah (Zecharias) Clevenger, b. abt 1774, Shenandoah Co., VA; d. ???;
m. Rebecca ???, abt 1795, TN. One of their daughters:
Rebecca Clevenger, b. 13 May 1806, Cocke Co., TN; d. 26 Mar 1848, Ray Co.,
MO [alternate info.: June 1849]; bur. Dillon Cemetery, Orrick, Ray Co., MO.
Rebecca Clevenger m. Isaac Allen (above son of Else Clevenger) on 1 Nov
1826, Ray Co., MO.
So it looks like my husband Jim is at least distantly related to several of
you. Great!

I promise to get our ancestors posted soon, and have enjoyed seeing all the
postings, but I have a request:
Please include locations as often as possible, at least at the point where
a "migration" took place. As with many other families in generations past,
the Clevengers liked to "re-cycle" names. It is so confusing, even with
dates and locations, trying to determine which line a particular Reuben
(for example) is from that it can be frustrating.
I realize people often leave out locations to save space (and typing), but
it does really help.
Thanks!
Judy
