I suspect the problem is that someone is using MS (Mississippi) when
they really mean Missouri. This happens fairly frequently, and it's an
easy mistake to make. I suggest it is better to use the real
abbreviations (Mo., Miss., Tenn., etc.) than the postal code letters
(MS, MO, MI, MA, etc.), which really were designed only for use on mail
and are still greek to most people.

I was just in the KY state Lib. in Frankfort and there was a file on the

now for not copying it, but know that someone out there could get the info in

Hi Linda,
I do have Cocke Co. CLEVENGERs, but they were a few generations earlier
than yours. I'm copying your message to the CLEVENGER-L mailing
list, as I suspect someone there may be able to shed some light.
(Folks, Linda's address is lohrum(a)solve.net.) If you'd like to
be subscribed to that mailing list, let me know, and I'll have
your address added to the distribution list...

All I was saying was that there was no contemporary records of the name Bartlett
Clevenger in Cocke Co. It first appeared in 1982 in "Over The Misty Blue Hills".
Therefore, it should be independently confirmed. so far it hasn't been reread as
Bartlett as far as I know- so take the name of Bartlett with a grain of salt.

Here is what I have on the Clevenger ancestors;
The Clevenger Family
The Clevengers can be found in the American colonies from the early years
of the eighteenth century, often in evidence in the same geographic areas
as the early Van Metres.
George Clevenger
George Clevenger, our ancestor, was born in England in 1654 and by 1676 was
to be found on the Van Der Donck estate on the Hudson River in what is now
Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. In that year he married Sarah
Hadden, who was born on the estate, the daughter of John Hadden and his
wife Elizabeth. George died April 1684 and Sarah sometime prior to
February 1691.
George and Sarah were parents of:
George, b 1676 Westchester Co NY;
John.
John Clevenger
John Clevenger was born 1678 in Westchester County, New York, the son of
George Clevenger and his wife Sarah Hadden. He migrated to Burlington
County in the West Province of New Jersey sometime before 1706.
In 1714 both John Van Metre and John Clevenger were listed as debtors to
the estate of John Bowne, a wealthy Monmouth County merchant. He died in
Burlington County in 1746.
John and his wife Mary were parents of:
Mary, b 1706 Burlington Co, m 12 Sep 1728 Thomas Hawkins, d Frederick Co
VA;
Hannah, b 1709 Burlington Co, m 21 Aug 1731 William Duckworth;
Samuel;
Catherine, b 1711 Burlington Co, m 26 Jun 1732 Charles Miller;
Abraham, b abt 1718 Burlington Co, m 26 Jul 1742 Jane Platt, d aft 1794 PA;
John, b 1718 Burlington Co, m 17 Mar 1742 Hannah Baker;
George, b abt 1720 Burlington Co, m 19 Jul 1737 Deliverance Horner, d 1809
VA;
Thomas, b 1722 Burlington Co, m 9 Feb 1746 Mary Platt, d 1772 Burlington
Co;
Margaret, b 1724 Burlington Co, m 9 Feb 1746 Thomas Asson;
William, b 1726 Burlington Co, m 17 Aug 1850 Mercy Asson; d Dec 1768
Monmouth Co NJ.
Samuel Clevenger
Samuel Clevenger was born 1710 in Burlington County, New Jersey, the son of
John Clevenger and his wife Mary. Sometime before 1747 he moved west to
Frederick County, Virginia, perhaps following in the steps of his
acquaintance John Van Metre.
Samuel was the parent of:
William;
Samuel, born about 1758.
William Clevenger
William Clevenger was born about 1747 in Frederick County, Virginia, the
son of Samuel Clevenger. In 1766 or so he married Frances Acker, who was
born 1745.
In 1775 Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, a Lutheran minister in the Shenandoah
Valley, was chosen to head a committee of safety in opposition to British
oppression and began to recruit Germans and others for the "inevitable
conflict." He preached a farewell sermon, then threw off his vestments to
reveal the uniform of a colonel in the Continental Army. Members of the
congregation followed him to the recruiting office; the Independent Company
of Dunmore was formed; and William enlisted about 10 July 1775. On 2
November 1775 he is listed on the rolls of Captain Philip Helphinsine's
company. No further records of his service exist, although he may have been
with Washington at Valley Forge.
William was included on the Frederick County personal property tax lists
for the years 1782 through 1795. With his large family?four of whom had
married in the space of a few months in 1799--he migrated to Ross County,
Ohio in late 1802 or early 1804.
In September 1804 he was a witness to the will of John Hubbard of Union
Township. In 1805 Highland County was organized from parts of Ross, Adams
and Clermont Counties, and William is listed ion the 1807 census of adult
males. In 1808 he was on the Liberty Township tax lists, and is seen on the
Highland County tax lists of 1812 and 1814. He died at Hillsboro in 1817.
William and Frances were parents of:
James, b abt 1766, m 17 Jul 1786 Martha McGraw, d aft 1820;
William, b abt 1774 Frederick Co VA, m 22 Aug 1799 Omeny Powers, d 1843
Randolph Co IN;
Abraham, b 22 Sep 1775 Frederick Co, m 17 Aug 1799 Eunice Branson,
witnessed will of Morgan Van Matre 1813, d 17 Oct 1846 Randolph Co IN;
Sarah, b 30 Apr 1777 Frederick Co, m 25 Dec 1799 Thomas Ireland, d 23 Nov
1864 Warren Co OH;
Mahlon, b 1778 Frederick Co, m 29 Jun 1803 Betsy Clark, d 29 Jun 1803
Frederick Co;
John, b 12 Jan 1780 Frederick Co, m 27 Apr 1799 Nancy Stothard, d 22 Aug
1872 Randolph Co IN;
Mary (Polly), b 1782 Frederick Co, m 24 Mar 1804 Reuben Crabb;
Hannah, b 1784 Frederick Co, m 8 Apr 1813 Jonathan Bales;
Samuel, b 1786 Frederick Co, m 12 Feb 1809 Margaret Curry, d 7 Jun 1867
Randolph Co, IN;
Jonathan, b 5 Feb 1788 Frederick Co, m 6 Sep 1810 Christina Owsley, d 1875
Randolph Co IN;
Catherine.
Catherine Clevenger
Catherine Clevenger was born about 1792, probably in Frederick County,
Virginia and probably the daughter of William Clevenger and his wife
Frances Acker. She married Joseph Van Metre in Highland County, Ohio 29
March 1812. (See "The Van Meter Family.")

... I got my information from Marjorie Clevenger who did a book on the Macoupin

I would like information on any of Joshua's children as far as
descendants etc.
My e-mail is lacarlson(a)hrn.bradley.edu

This statement is confusing to me. Bartlett is a name that I have encountered
in relation to the Cleavengers. Minor (Son of Samuel Cleavenger of Virginia)
and Elizabeth Goodwin Cleavenger had a dau. Elizabeth Clevenger who married
Silas Josiah Bartlett. Another son of Samuel Cleavenger, David Cleavenger
(born abt. 1787) married Elizabeth Bartlett dau. of Thomas Bartlett. Could
this be a connection to the Bartlett, mentioned above?

Hi, I am looking for the family of a Pleas & Melvina Clevinger and their sons
Al (Rosina) and George (Menerva) Clevinger. I think their daughter was
married to W. E. Sargent. In the 1910 census in Pike county lists W. E.
Sargent as a widower. I am not sure what his wife's first name was. The
Sargent children were Dewey, Oscar and Nora Sargent. Nora is my husband's
mother.

Dear Clevenger Cousins;
I found the above very interresting. Where they had born Burrington Co.,
I have as Monmouth County. I wonder if these two counties were the same
County at one time. Dose anyone known? I am a descendant of EDWIN ODELL

I am still looking for the father of Archibald Clevenger and his wife Rachel

Most think Archibald was the son of John and Elizabeth.

Hi Bev, Thank you for the info. It filled in a lot of holes but also
created some questions!!
1. Same m. date (6/6/1795) for Richard to Sarah Wood and Elias to Nancy Wood
but Nancy would have been only 11 years old.
2. Jesse E. Clevenger s/o Thomas c. 1768 m. Jane Morrison. I have Jesse
Clevenger s/o Thomas m. Jeanette Fleming??
3. Thomas residing in Va. in 1782 but dtr Psyche b. 1782 in Cocke Co.?
Very interesting about the spelling of the name Psyche. This is a family
name carried down through generations but some show spelling of Syche. I
would assume your spelling is the correct one. Pittman is also used
frequently. These 2 names have helped to identify marriages between Cocke
Co. families. ie 1850 census shows a widow Syche Gray. Several of her
children carry Clevenger names and the others carry Gray names. Was able to
identify her as Psyche Clevenger b. 5/14/1813 d/o Elias and Nancy (Wood) I
am a Gray, Sisk, Netherton, Thomas, Courtney, Kesterson, Kelley Hurley and
Fox. I'm going to send you a few more pieces. I would appreciate any
corrections you might have. Lari

river, in a keel boat which they constructed themselves in Tennessee before
leaving. When they reached the mouth of the Fishing River, while ascending
the Missouri, they steered their boat into the smaller river, and after
ascending it about six miles landed, and settling there, made their homes
thenceforth in this country. All kinds of game was abundant, and their
chief occupation at first was hunting, but in a few years they cleared land,
improved farms, and settled down to a quiet life of farming.
>From 1830 to 1832, Mr. Clevenger was sheriff of Ray Co, and in 1856, was
elected to represent the county in the general assembly. The duties of his
office he discharged with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the
people. He has been a member of the New Garden (Old School) Baptist Church
for more than sixty years. (He was a charter member) His wife is a
Presbyterian. He is one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of
Ray County.
