Does anyone have the information on James Clevenger in the 1850 Macoupin
census?
James Clevenger married Elanore Stults on 7 May 1877 in Barry Co, MO.
Does anyone know who he is? Does anyone live close enough to Barry Co
to be able to check the marriage license to see if the ages of the bride
and groom were given or maybe the parents?
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this list and was just wondering if anyone knows whether it is
still possible to buy a copy of the Ray Co., MO Clevenger book. If anyone can
give me the details, I would appreciate it. Thanks much.

I found the William Clevenger-Samuel Clevenger connection in the Ancestral
File at the local LDS Family History Center. As you know they incorporate
anything into this file that is sent to them. The contributors of the
information included Dorothy Morris, PO Box 436, Calypool AZ 85532, and
Betty Jo Clevenger, 2017 West Avenue, O-4, Palmdale CA 93551. I wrote both
of them and the best I can glean is that the information came from George
Griffiths book. I have aletter from George himself who gives the names of
many of William's children but does not mention William's father.--Jerry

There is a Levisa (Linnie) Clevenger born Apr 1891 VA who was the daughter of
John L and Sarah C. (----) Clevenger who were in Buchanan Com Grundy Dist VA
in 1900. John was the son of James and Mary (Looney) Clevenger. James was
the son of John and Poly (Stiltner) Clevenger and John was probably the son
of Levi and Nancy (Elswick) Clevenger. I just put a book our on these
Clevenger. They are VERY difficult to research.

Does anyone have any information on Levisa Elizabeth Clevenger, born in
Grundy Virginia, My family is not cooperating in this effort to find our
ancestory so I have no definate dates....She would have been born between
1860-1880 as near as we can see...She married Jackson Ramey from
Pikeville KY, then moved to West Virginia. I'm not certain how many
children they had.. My grandmother, Dora Ramey, her sister Paula, and her
brother John are the only ones I'm certain of...but Im told there were
other siblings...however I don't have the names.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Your John Clevenger is the son of Joshua and mary (meade) Clevenger. Joshua was
the probably the son of Levi and Nancy Elswick whose kids settled mostly in Pike
Co, KY. I just finsihed a book on Levi's family. It is $15 + $3 priority mail.
My current project is bringing George Griffith's 1980 book on the Clevenger
up-to-date.

I hope I am posting this message correctly. Forgive me if I'm not.
I'm looking for information on my g-g-g grandfather John Clevenger who was
born in Kentucky about 1828. He is listed in Boyd County Kentucky in the
1860 and later censuses and died in 1900 also in Boyd County. He also served
in the Confederate Cavalry (10th Kentucky Cav.) during the Civil War
Does anyone have any info about his birth, parents etc.? Any connections or
suggestions?
Thanks,

Jerry...
Have been checking into the Putnam County, Ohio Clevengers, since my
grandmother was Mary Catherine (Clevenger) Risser, the daughter of Daniel
Clevenger, who was the son of Benjamin Clevenger, the sixth white settler in
Putnam County in 1831. I am just starting to put together information,
which so far leads me to believe they were descendants of William Clevenger,
and perhaps earlier from George Clevenger, (likely Samuel Clevengers
brother), born in NJ about 1713 and buried in Frederick County, VA, and
perhaps earlier from George Clevenger, born about 1654 in England and buried
in Yonkers, Westchester County, NY. George from England may have been a
Puritan, but this is just a guess at this stage.
Some of this later information came from a site as follows:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/j/o/h/Norvan-L-Johnson/COL7-0005.html
It appears significant that the George Clevenger born about 1713, who
married Deliverance Horner on July 19, 1737 in New Jersey could well be the
brother and sister-in-law of Samuel, the father of William, since he was
born some ten years after George's marriage and the fact that George was
buried in Frederick County, VA in 1809.
A message received via Sarah Clevenger via Clevenger-L(a)rootsweb.com gave
the information in part as follows:
"The Putnam Co. Ohio Clevengers were from the family of William and Frances
(Aker) Clevenger who came from Virginia. The Tennessee Clevengers seem to
be the descendants of Thomas and Psyche (Pittman) Clevengers were moved to
the Cocke Co, TN area about 1796 and the Kentucky Clevengers were mostly
kids of Levi and Nancy (Elswick) Clevenger. These three branches were from
the Virginia Clevengers who originally came from NJ. Some other Clevengers
went directly to the Warren Co. area of Ohio."
So it appears likely from the above information that both William, George
and his father George are my grandfathers several generations back. I hope
the above site and previous received message is of help to you.
I had been under the impression, but not fact, that my great, great, great
grandfather, Benjamin, and his brothers made the trip up from Cocke Co., TN
to settle in Putnam Co., Ohio in 1831. I have a picture in a Putnam Co.
atlas which shows pictures and acreage of the early Clevengers. In fact the
beautiful brick home built by grandfather Julius Risser and grandmother Mary
(Clevenger) Risser, that my mother was raised in... was built in 1913, and
has been recently restored, and was on the Putnam Co. Christmas tour of
homes this past year. It sets just south of Vaughnsville, Ohio. Daniel
Clevenger, my grandmother's father, had the 640 acre farm, where that home
is located. My uncle, Harry Risser, who passed away about three years ago,
farmed those grounds his whole life, and his widow Ruth still lives about a
mile due west of the home. There are many, many Clevengers buried in the
cemetery ( a quarter mile east of the home) between the home and Aunt Ruth.
The funeral of grandmother, Mary, was held in the front parlor of the home
in 1938, and was then buried in the cemetery just across the road a quarter
mile directly east from the home. Grandfather Risser died in 1945 and his
services were also in the front parlor of the home and burial beside Mary.
Daniel Clevenger married Catherine Vaughn in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1865, and
her father platted the small village of Vaughnsville, Ohio, which about a
quarter mile north of their settled farm area.
Please let me know if you find out additional facts about the relationships.
Thank you! I hope the information is of help. I live in Wapakoneta, Ohio
about 17 miles south of Vaughnsville, and visit the cemetery every few years
and whenever a relative from that area passes on.
God Bless.

There's one for Geo. and two for George.
Book B2 - #358: Surveyed 9 Nov 1816 by Exchange Treasury Warrant 1880 = 2
Jan 1807 Geo. CLEVENGER 46 acres 3 rods 3 poles in Frederick County on Cedar
Creek adjoining Joseph Fawcett, Sarah Zane, Thornbury, Mordecai Whitestone.
10 June 1818 [Dl'd Mr. McComick 14 Oct 1818]
Book A2 - #147: Exchange Treasury Warrant 1554 = 24 Jan 1804 Samuel Fawcett
& Joseph Fawcett 431 acres 3 rods 36 poles (1 Mar 1808) in Frederick County
adjoining Thomas Fawcett, Joseph Snapp, George Booker, Isaac Zane, Jonathan
Lupton, George CLEVENGER, on Cedar Creek. 7 Feb 1809 [Dl'd Charles Brent 7
Feb 1809]
Book D2 - #113: Surveyed 10 May 1830 by Treasury Warrant 10,424 = 23 Feb
1830 Joseph Snapp 5 1/4 acres in Frederick County adjoining George
CLEVENGER, Peter Gilham, Luckins formerly Richard Fawcett, Abraham Miller
formerly George CLEVENGER, care now Gilham. 24 Aug 1831.
The relationship seems to be this. John Clevenger, father of Lily Ann
Clevebger who married Jesse Grace, was born in 1790 and was the son of
Richard Clevenger and Sarah Wood. Richard was probably the son of
Thomas and Psyche Clevenger.
The other line seems to be Benjamin who was the son of George Clevenger
and Elizabeth Bradshas. George was probably the son of Thomas and
Psyche. Since the cocke Co court house burned we can't say for sure who
were Thomas and Psyche children.

Hi Nancy,
I'm not familiar with CLEVENGERs from those areas. I'm passing your

Hi Lori,
Given CLEVENGERs in both Ray County, Missouri, and Cocke County,
Tennessee, we almost have to be cousins, though I don't see the
connection off hand. My CLEVENGER was Lillian, who married Jesse
GRACE in Ray County in 1847 or so. Her parents were John CLEVENGER
and Margaret WILLS.
I'm passing your note along to the CLEVENGER mailing list (if you're
not on the mailing list, and would like to be, let me know and I'll
add you), since I'm sure the people there will be interested and
maybe can see a connection.
