I believe that county 96 is Will county - were there any Clevengers

Actually, County 096 is Wayne county, IL. How does your William Spell his last
name? Candee
That is why I figured that we needed something to say that MS was an unlikely
desitnation.

I believe this is the John CLEVENGER listed in "The Clevenger Families of
Ray County, Missouri," compiled by Barbara Proffitt, Carol Proffitt, and M.
Virginia Mills, 1991, as being the first child of Richard and Sarah (WOOD)
Clevenger. The book shows that he married twice: (1) Elizabeth HENSLEY (d.
abt 1821); and (2) Margaret WELLS, 3 Jul 1823, dau of James Wells.
The book goes on to mention that among the many positions he held in the
county, he was Sheriff from 1830 to 1832 (a slight difference from the
Atlas).
If you are interested in this book, I believe it is still available. The
contact person is Barbara Proffitt, Rt. 2, Box 259a, Richmond, MO 64085.
(I have no connection to her--just appreciate their work on this family.)
I hope this helps.

Judy -- I have Barbara Proffitt's book, and you are correct in the great
compilation they made on Ray County, Missouri. However, I do not believe that
this John Cleavenger born in 1815 is the same as yours. candee

In general, the Clevengers in Ray Co, MO came from Cocke co, Tenn.
A bunch of Clevengers from Macoupin Co, Illinois went to Taney Co,
Missouri. As far as I know none went to Mississippi. Of course,
individuals went whereever they took a notion to go.

Ray Co., MO is a "hotbed" for CLEVINGERs and it's a reasonable "migration
distance" from Illinois. In the 1877 Ray Co. Atlas reprint, p. 6, it shows
that there was a John CLEAVENGER who was sheriff of the county from 1830 to
1834. The name is usually spelled with the "in" spelling in Ray Co. but, as
we know, spelling was not a top priority in those days. My genealogy page

I have a William Cleavenger born in 1862, son of Elkanah Delany Clevenger and
Nancy Goff, i also have a John Clevenger born in 1843 married to a Mary Ann
Koontz, in IL, I also have a John G. Clevenger born in July 31, 1813 and
married to a Mary Ann Fleming. I have at least 6 Johns and 5 Williams from VA
to IL in my line dating all the way back to 1636. According to my 90 year old
aunt there was a clan of Clevengers that left IL and moved to MS.. and she
remembers them so it was in this century, she says chances are that they were
going there to meet relatives of some sort..
Do you have any othere dates or maybe a middle name?

I received copies of PERSI indexed articles from the Allen County Library,
just 2 weeks ago. I think they only accept requests that are pre-paid and sent
by regular mail and it takes about 3 months to receive the copies.

I might add - last time I wrote them there was a $5.00 look-up fee plus a per
page copy fee. Well worth it for the info that I received, just wanted to make
the "family" aware of cost incurred.
This article is referenced in PERSI put out by the Allen County Library. If your
write to them, you can get a copy of the article.
