The George Clevenger who married Arminda Simpkins and was in Grainger Co
was the son of George and Elizabeth Bradshaw, not Reuben. Reuben had a
son George, but he was another George.

DYasher, you should be glad that some ancestor back there named a little
boy Seth and not John, William or James. I think I found your Seth
Clevenger!!!!!!
In the 1900 census in Holt Co, Nebraska is a Seth Clevenger born Nov
1887 in MO in the family of John Z. and Tabitha W. Clevenger both born
in MO. They had just come to Nebraska because little Gretta was born
Dec 1899 MO and was 5 mos old.
John Z. Clevenger is in the recent book on the Ray County Clevengers. I
think that copies are still available. Does anybody know?
If you check the Nebraska 1910 census, you may be able to find Seth and
you may be able to find a marriage record for him there.

It is great to see all the activity on the Clevenger "party line".
For the curious - The Clevenger name is French Huguenots . When they
were kicked out of France by the Edict of Nantes (when? 1595?) they went
into the Netherlands and onto England and from there to the colonies.
There are supposed to be a lot of Clevenger living in Normandy now.
Do you know what inspired the Ray County pioneers to leave home so
early? It was "1800 and froze to death". In 1815 a volcano near
Krakatoa in what is now Indonesia blew up and put so much dust into the
atmosphe that the world had a "nuclear winter". In New England they had
snow in every month of the year. Needless to say, the crops were
nonexistent and the times were very hard at the higher elevations.
Although it took awhile, the Clevengers traveled by boat from their
dooorstep in Cocke Co to Missouri where they went over land to Ray Co.
Incidently, the old fellow who went from MO to CA was Archibald not
Charles Archibald. I have not found a record written in his lifetime
that called him anything but Archibald. It was his grandson (I think)
that was Charles Archibald. I think he said that he was named after his
grandfather and so sombody assumed that it was his full name and not
just his middle name that was the same as his grandfather's.

Karen Kimball's message suggested an answer to something that has been
puzzling me. I recently moved to Ramona, a rural town northeast of San
Diego, and, upon reading histories of the region became aware of
something called Clevenger Canyon. Could find no explanation. But in
checking Karen's note, I see that her ancestor Charles Archibald
Clevenger, died in Ramona. That may be the link. Doubt many Clevengers
have lived in this small town.
I descend from the marriage of Sarah Clevenger (1809-c1875) and
Lawson Sisk (1800-c1893). Their son, Bartlett Sisk moved to Ray County,
Mo., and he is my ancestor. That is on my mother's side. Strangely, my
father's side includes the Justus and Faubion families who also came
from Cocke County, Tenn.
Hi Clevenger Kin,
My Great Grand-father was William H. Clevenger. That sure was a popular
name. My William was born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1793. His
father, my 2nd great grand-father was Eben. Eben was a veteran of the
Revoluntionary War. In the early 1800's, Eben moved his family from Virginia
to Ross County, Ohio.
William was a veteran of the war of 1812. In 1815, William married Ruth
Emmons in Ross County. They moved to neighboring Pickaway County. William
and Ruth had several children. Ruth died in 1857. William married Nancy
Davison in 1858. Nancy was much younger than William. They had four
children, the youngest, my grand-father, Samuel Clevenger.

What do you mean "what nationality the Clevengers are?" The name Clevinger.
Mine were from Ky and VA but before that I dont know where they were from.
Actually I dont know a lot about the ones I have, also there is another
variation of the name spelled Clevinger and I am sure there are many more.
Good Luck

Ron,
I have a George Clevenger who was in and around Grainger Co. Tn from
1840-1860. I have him married to Arminda who was born in VA. Their children
were all born in Grainger Co. Tn. They are: Robert, Calvin, Sarah, Julia,
Elizebeth, Issac, and John. I don't have much information since his brother,
Joshua, was my branch. His father was Reuben Alnessbon Clevenger who was from
VA. I am certain there is a connection here.
My wif is a descendant of James Clevenger b. 1817-1819 TN was married to
Alvina on the 1860 Taney Co census.Calvin Clevenger b. 1852 was a son of
James.Louis Andrew was a son of Calvin. Mabel Irene was a son of
Louis.Mabel was my wife's mother.I have seen on this group where James
was a son of Reuben Alnesson Clevenger b. in Va.I found Reuben on the
1840 and 1850 Taney co.Census and he is on the 1830 Illinois census
index. Was he in Cocke co TN in 1820?
Has anyone on this list ever mailed for military records? If so how long
should they take, I have been waiting for months now and have not heard a
word, even sending them documentation, proper forms, etc.. gee I hope all the
proper docs, did not confuse the gov't?
LOL

William was born 1841, Randolph, Co. In. Besty (Elizabeth) was born Randolph
Co. In. in 1842. In George Griffiths book "Clevenger Pioneers &
Descendants." pg 289 shows William and Besty with thier first born son
William Morgan. On pg 288 it shows Morgan as Williams father, I am still
waiting for death certificate of Williams. He died here in Iowa. We think
Bestys father was Samuel A Clevenger, son of Abraham. on Pg. 270 it showes
Samuel as Abrahams son. Morgan's father was Samuel brother of Abraham. On pg.
279 it shows Samuel A. and his family. I have William and Besty history on to
Iowa in 1870 i know they went on to Kas. in the early 1880. But haven't
found them yet in anything other then what my grandmother had in the family
Bible, untill 1895 in Grant City Mo. Worth Co. Besty Died in Iowa . I haven't
had time this winter to go look for her grave. Besty and William had 6
chrildren which only 3 lived to marry and have familys. My grandmother was
the only one to live from #2 wife Marthia . I have lots of information on my
famly, not all of it yet, but maybe someday. Ettaliene(a)aol.com
