Recently while I was reading email from another list I noticed that
BobWScott(a)aol.com mentioned an early Clevenger. I wrote to him about his
Clevenger relative and here is what he had to say.

I have that Mary Clevenger was dau. of John Clevenger and Wife, Mary. John was
son of George Clevenger and Sarah Hadden. This is attributed in William
Clevenger Works, Volume I. Somers Mansion, N.J. I haven't got a clue what this
source is.
The Haddens were a prominent family and think their line is proven further
back. I may have more detail on the Clevengers, but it's buried. I haven't put
a priority on it since I can't prove a connection.
Here's John's nine children as given by the transcription I have.
1. Mary m. Ths. Hankins
2. Hannah m. William Duckworth
3. Cathrine m. Charles Miller
4. Geo. m. Deliverance Horner
5. John m. Hannah Baker
6. Abraham m. Jane Platt
7. Margaret m. Thomas Asson
8. Wm. m. Mercy Asson
9. Thos m. Mary Flatt
Dates for all the marraiges were given, but not the source. I know the earlier
ones are given by the N.J. archives, but I don't know about the later ones (or
course those ch ildren didn't go to Va.
Mary, Geo. and John went to Frederick County, VA.

I obtained my reprinted copy from Sarah Clevenger, Ph.D. and it had all
details from my grandmother, who died in 1938, to the first Clevenger
(George) in this country around 1650+. He came from England, and info from
other sources indicates his father was a John Clevenger in England. Great
inch thick book with details of Clevengers. Here's info how I obtained the
reprinted book as follows:
"Clevenger Pioneers & Descendants"
Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 80-80102
Compiled by: George R. Griffiths
Gateway Press, Inc.
Baltimore 1980
Reprinted with permission of the author by:
Sarah Clevenger Ph.D.
717 South Henderson Street
Bloomington, Indiana 47401-1992
Please direct all correspondence and orders to the above address. It cost
$20 plus $4 priority mail. I requested the reprint of the book from Sarah
and mailed her a check for $24 and received the book in a couple of weeks.
George R. Griffiths (born in Gomer, Ohio) is a registered genealogist, and
the information is well worth the price.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the info. The marriage is the same one I found but in a different
book. I will have to get a copy of the book to do more research.
Have a happy thanksgiving.

Joez,
Found these pertaining details in book "Clevenger Pioneers & Descendants"by
George R. Griffiths as follows:
Page 371 -- "Elizabeth Clevenger mar. 13 Aug. 1844 in Va. by Rev. Christian
Streit, to Charles Grubb."
Page 86 --- "My grandfather Jacob Clevenger was married twice his first
children I only know as Grandmother spoke of them Asa, Martin, Cintha.
Peter, and Frank." Grandfather second family and wife was Elizabeth Crouse.
She had four (4) children; Elizabeth, Helen, Maria, and John. Elizabeth
married Charles Soull(?)" Note: The above is a part taken from letter
written on 20 Oct. 1910 by John William Clevenger from Stephans City, Va.
Page 88 --- "The children of Jacob(5) and Elizabeth (Krouse) Clevenger were:
20.1.7 John William, born c. 1816/17.
20.1.8 Mary Elizabeth, b. c. 1816/18; mar. Bushrod Fuller (Stelzl)
and/or Charles Soules (J.W. Clevenger letter). (West; Lehse)
20.1.9 Virginia, b. 1816+; mar. ___ Beatty.
20.1.10 Helen, born c. 1819/20 in Frederick Co. Va.; was mar. to Philip
Harley of Oldtown, MD, who was b. c. 1813. (It has not been confirmed that
this marriage and that of Maria, following, were performed by Rev. Christian
Streit. If so, the Rev. is presumed to be either nephew, or son of the
earlier Rev. Chr. Streit who died in 1812.)
20.1.11 Maria, mar (1) on 3 Aug. 1840 to Geo. W. Grubbs by the Rev.
Christian Streit (West; Arch. Clev.); and mar. (2) John M. Perry (J.W. Clev.
letter)."
Note: Their has to be some close connection as to marriage by the same
Reverend in the same area, and surname marriages. While this doesn't appear
to be the same Elizabeth, it appears they were from the same area and
attended the same Church. There are many other related details in the above
mentioned book by George R. Griffiths.

The only thing I have found is the marriage record of Elizabeth Clevenger to
Charles Grubbs in 1844. I have not been able to determine who her parents are.

Hi everyone:
It has been awhile since I have listed this family. I am looking for
descendants of John R. and Rhoda Clevenger Butler. They were married @
1856 in either Cass Co., IN or Page Co., IA. They had at least 3
children, Sarah, b. @ 1858, Tilly, b. 1860 and a son M.W.(?) born 1870.
I have located the family on the 1870 census but loose track of them
after that.
I am also looking for descendants of Marrion an Mary Butler Clevenger.
Marrion is a brother to Rhoda and Mary Butler was a sister to John.
Marrion and Mary wer married on April 9, 1865 in Page Co, IA. I have no
other information on this family.
Is anyone familiar with these families. Would love to share info.
Debbie
Have you checked the probate record in MO (was it Grundy Co?) for a record of a
Clevenger between 1852 and 1860? If you need an address, I can probably find it.
I'd like to know what you find on this one.
thanks
S Clevenger

Gives us some names, dates, and places and we might be able to answer your
question. The farther back the dates, the better. Give the county in a state,
also helps a bunch.

Sarah, No I have not checked the probates in Grundy County, If you have an
address handy I will sure use it. I'll let you know what I come up with .
Thanks,

Did you get the e-mail that I sent you about the family in Grundy Co,
MO? This seemed to be the right Christina.

Hi Sarah !
Yes, I did get your email regarding Christina, and I have been fortunate
enough to locate her with B. N . Nicholes and some of their children on the
1870 census for Cherokee County, Kansas , then in 1883 they moved to Eureka
Springs, Carroll Co., AR, where B.N. started a merchandising business, then -
nothing ! No More Christina, No more B.N. The business was sold and later
became Walker Furniture Store. One of their son's - Joseph R. Nicholes
remained in Eureka Springs, married Margret M. Carpenter and had children one
of which became my Gr Grandfather. I have found Margret (Maggie) in the
Cemetery in Eureka Springs, beside my Gr Grandfather Claude Nicholes. She died
in 1922 by suicide while he died at the hands of another in 1940. I have
checked all funeral home records census lookup's etc, no luck on locating
Christina or BN and then after the death of Claude - Joseph disapears too so I
am back to square one again . I have not been able to locate any of them in
Missouri after 1900 . If you come accross anything else I would greatly
appreciate it because I just do not know what else I can do at this point.
Have requested 1870 census lookup for St. Clair CO., MO 1860, 1870, 1880,
1890, 1900 1910 and 1920 have had no response . ( The Nicholes family was
suppose to have settled in St. Clair Co.,MO abt 1852 -1855 )

your Christianna Clevenger, & I only have two Nicholes's & they are not
married to Clevengers.
Sorry that I could not help.

I have Branson ancestry. Do the names Beulah Ridgeway & John
Clevenger sound familiar? Beulah Ridgeway is a descendant of Robert
MacKay Sr. whose descendants I've been tracing to add to our genealogy
on the family.

Am searching for information on Samuel Douglas CLEVENGER, b. 1795 in
Burlington Co., NJ. Appeared in 1860 Delaware Co., IN census. His
children were all married in this county, including his son Joseph
CLEVENGER, my 3rd g. gf. Joseph married Martha (Patsy)
Hineker/Heinecker in Delaware Co., IN 8 Nov., 1838. She died this
county 21 Feb., 1894. I do not have much information on Samuel or
Joseph except childrens names. I do have the CLEVENGER line back to
George, b. ca 1654 and died by 1682 in Yonkers, NY. My information is
very sketchy on all my CLEVENGER'S.
Hello all:
This is my first posting on this group. I've begun compiling genealogy
information for my baby son as it always seemed like too much trouble to do
for myself. I'm amazed at how much fun I'm having hunting for his
ancestors. I love computers.
Thanks to Sarah Clevenger's reprint of George Griffiths' "Clevenger
Pioneers and Descendants", I've got his Clevenger line back to Abraham
Clevenger b.22 Sep 1775 Frederick Co., VA (person number 14.3 page
270 of Griffiths' book)
My son's grandfather is listed there also, as 14.3.1.3.2.1.2.1 Thomas
Clevenger on page 274.
Does anyone have a GEDCOM file of the Clevengers in Griffiths' book,
or any of my son's Clevengers? I'd really like to have that. I'm also
looking for information on each of the wives along my line.
My Surname list so far is: Branson, Bump, Clevenger, Conner, Crouch,
Helm, Lewis, Macklefresh, Pidgeon, Stevens.
Looking for Christina Clevenger b: abt 1843 in Indiana, who later married B.N.
Nicholes b:1843 OH. I have no specific towns or counties for either of them .
Looking for their parents and siblings . I have no Information on these
families.
Appreciate all help.

I am not the one who posted the qury that you responded to but I am looking
for data on the Clevenger family that came from Fredrick Co, Va. My great
great grandmother was Elizabeth Clevenger that Married Charles Grubbs in 1844
in Fredrick Co, Va. I don't know if they moved to the Ohio area. They lived in
VA until after the Civil War. There son Charles Wesley (a twin) , my great
grand father lived in Mo. and OK. That I know of and was borned in VA.
Any data from the VA area would be appreciated.
Thanks
