Dear Friends on the Cleveland list:
I am hoping you can help me. I do not have any Clevelands in my line that I
know of, but in my family search I keep bumping into references to this
book:
Genealogy of Benj. Cleveland of Canterbury, Ct. By Horace Gillette
Cleveland. Chicago, 1879. (260p.)
I am struggling with a dead end in my direct line ? have been, on and off,
for at least ten years. It involves a Billings line in Montville CT, who
seem to have dropped out of thin air. The stumbling block is a Samuel
Billings, who probably existed. He had a son John, who was my ggg
grandfather and whom I know a lot about. He had at least one and possibly
other sons, name(s) unknown. John and perhaps the brother moved from Ct to
VT in the 1780s. The brother may have lived in Lyme NH for a bit before
removing to Brookfield VT.
The brother, whose name I think may have been Benjamin Billings, had two
daughters, Amy and Grace Billings. They married HOVEY brothers: Rufus
Cleveland Hovey and Samuel Hovey, both sons of Samuel HOVEY (1742/3-1833)
and Abigail CLEVELAND (1746-1832).
The Genealogy of Benjamin Cleveland is always cited as the source for
information about the parents of Grace and Amy Billings. I am wondering if
anyone has this book and would be willing to tell me what is says about the
Billings sisters and Hovey brothers.
Many thanks!
