The name Isbell caught my eye. I would like to know the connection of a
Pendleton Isbell to my husband's Clevelands. This summer while vacationing,
we were at the I-85 Welcome Center just into South Carolina from Ga. We
signed our name as Clevelands. The person at the desk said all the land
around that area had been owned by the Clevelands, and in fact, four were
buried at the top of the hill. I asked if there were any snakes up there,
and he said, "no, it is very well maintained." We walked up the hill and
there were four gravestones, three Clevelands (one of them my husband's
direct descendant John Cleveland, all Rev. soliders), along with a Pendleton
Isbell. Thus, my interest in Isbell.

Hello Kelvin,
>From the information you gave in your inquiry, I believe that the Samuel
Cleveland you are interested in must have been from the Northern Cleveland
line that arrived in Mass.. My line comes through the Southern line of
Clevelands that arrived in America in VA.
I do have a Samuel Cleveland listed as having been b. abt. 1858 in South
Carolina s/o Frederick Moss Cleveland and Nancy Marie Isbell, but I have
Frederick and Nancy having migrated to Action, Hood Co. Texas, so I doubt
that is the correct Samuel Cleveland. By the way, I don't have a Lawrence
family in my Cleveland file but hopefully someone else does have more
information than I have.
I think you should go to the two sites listed below to see if you can find
more information on the one you are interested in. The Cleveland Family
Chronicle site is for both the Northern and Southern lines of the family so
maybe you'll be able to find more information from another researcher. I
wish you success.

The name Cleveland appears only once in my family history, but my
mother for years spoke of the "Cleveland crowd". When asked she
confessed to not knowing how anyone named Cleveland might be related,
but as a child she often heard them referred to.
The one appearance was as the middle name of one of my great-great
uncles, Samuel Cleveland Lawrence (22 Jan 1835 - >1880). To have no
information that he ever married, so there are no descendants of
which I'm aware who might know more. My hypothesis is that Samuel
Cleveland Lawrence was named after a Samuel Cleveland who was related
in some way to my great-great grandmother Eliza Ann Martin (1810, NYC
- 1893, Newark NJ). We know nothing of Eliza's parents but I'm
speculating that one of them is related to Clevelands, probably in
NYC, where Eliza Ann was born, but possibly NJ. There is very little
likelihood that the Clevelands are related to Eliza Ann's husband,
Stephen Fowler Lawrence, in that I know all of his siblings and aunts
and uncles, and, in most cases, their spouses and children and they
include no Clevelands.
So, I'm fishing for anyone who has good information on one or more
Cleveland families in the NYC/Northern NJ area and might have
relations in their family tree with the surname Lawrence.
Our family bibles do say that Eliza Ann Martin was born in NYC. I
also am reasonably sure that she and her husband, Stephen Fowler
Lawrence, were married in Passaic NJ, lived in and had at least three
children in Paterson, but moved to Newark in time for their fifth,
Samuel Cleveland, to be born there and maybe even earlier in time for
the fourth, whose city of birth I've been unable to confirm. After
living in Philadelphia for a short while where one child was born
they returned to Newark, later moving to Rahway NJ where four
additional children were born.
Convoluted and contorted that is what I have. If that comes
tantalizingly close to any of the Clevelands you have, let me know.
If not, I'd also appreciate a short answer too.
Thanks for the help.
Best regards,
Kelvin L. Kean
