Brenda,
There were a lot of marriages between the WHITEs and CLEVELANDs. I am
African American, but these were White CLEVELANDs marrying White WHITEs;
and Black CLEVELANDs marrying Black WHITEs.
I HAVE to include in my research any/all CLEVELANDs and WHITEs because
some of them probably owned some of my people at one time.
So if you should run across any wills, family Bibles, or other records
showing slave ownership, would you please feel free to let me know?
(And please don't feel badly about it, because those of us living today
had nothing to do with slavery. I accept it as a part of history.
If I am to find my roots, I have to/and have been able to get pass
that.)
Thank you!

I have Mahala White, married to Thomas Bryce. Their
daughter, Elizabeth Bryce, was born in 1829 Pickens Dist.,
SC, and died 1858 Pickens Dist, SC. Elizabeth married
Jonathan Reeder Cleveland in Pickens District in 1847.
Mahala may have had relatives across the border in Georgia,
but I don't have any information on her. I would be
interested in hearing about Mahala White's parents or
siblings.

Vivian,
I don't know for sure if there is a connection with William Wesley
CLEVELAND of Franklin Co., GA.. But I would dare to say that is most
possible. The names and locations are too close geographically not to
be related. What do you know about your William Wesley WHITE?

To the person with the query about WHITE/CLEVELAND/BRYCE/GRAY surnames:
I am also researching the WHITE/CLEVELAND surnames. Do you know if the
ones you are researching had roots or family in Hart, Elbert, or
Franklin Counties, GA? These counties in Georgia are just across the
Savannah River and the now Lake Hartwell from the places that you
mention that your WHITEs and CLEVELANDs were. Many people did migrate
to and fro across the Savannah during that time.
My g-grandfather, Peter James WHITE married Ophelia CLEVELAND (both born
in Georgia around 1855 =/-) in Elbert County, GA. in 1872. Parts of
Elbert Co. later became Hart County, and my people are shown as living
there later (I also grew up in Hart Co., GA.); and many are still there
today.
My search for information for the present is more focused on, but not
exclusive to Ophelia CLEVELAND. I know more about Peter WHITE than she,
but would still appreciate any information on the WHITEs as well.
If you think there could be a connection, please e-mail me at the above
address.
Thank you!

I am working on my husband's genealogy and subscribed to
this list just recently and I am looking forward to learning
a lot about his family while his grandparents are still
alive to share it with.
My husband's gr-gr-grandfather was Thomas Milton CLEVELAND,
born 1850 in SC. He moved to Texas and married Mary Susan
GREY in Panola County, TX, in 1872. They had 12 children,
all born in East Texas.
Thomas Milton's parents were Jonathan Reeder CLEVELAND and
Elizabeth BRYCE. They were married 1847 in Pickens
District, SC. Elizabeth's parents were Thomas BRYCE and
Mahala WHITE.
Jonathan Reeder Cleveland's parents were Eli Cleveland and
Mary REEDER. They were married in Pendleton District, but I
don't have a marriage date.
I have the Cleveland ancestors from the 1899 book, but I
would love to know more about the GREY, BRYCE, WHITE, and
REEDER families.

Hi folks,
A quick note that was brought to my attention by another listowner.
When you fill out your census, you should take a copy of it and add it to your
genealogy papers for future reference and your descendants.

INTERESTING!!! I didn't see these before. My grandmother's mother was
a CLEVELAND. My grandmother named my mother "Isabel". I have often
felt that if I could find for whom she was named, I might open new doors
to my ancestry. So far, my mother was the only "Isabel" in the family;
and the name is not that common in the part of Georgia where I came
from.
I also heard my grandmother speak of "Bige". (That one is on the list
of nicknames too.)
Anyone with an "Isabel" in the family? It might be key to my research.
(By the way, I'm African American, but that doesn't matter, because I
can't research one race without the other. :-) )
Thanks!
Edna

Yes, Vikki, I would like a copy of the articles in Genealogical Helper
regarding researching African American ancestors. I also would like to
receive a complimentary copy of the Cleveland Family Chronicles.
I will get in touch with the two women you listed when I return.
Thanks so very much for all your help.

Thank you for an interesting letter, Ethel. Recently I was contacted by two
ladies who are also researching our African-American cousins, so you may want
to contact them: Edna Lewis at ESL335(a)webtv.com and Onesia Green at
Onesia(a)zianet.com. A CFCRS member has sent me a book about Afro-Americans in
the Savannah River area I think it was. I passed that book along to Edna
first, and then Onesia, who has it now. I will be happy to pass it on to you
when Onesia is finished. The recent issue of *Genealogical Helper* has
articles os special interest to anyone researching African-American
ancestors. If you don't subscribe to the magazine or have access to it, let
me know and I will photocopy the articles for you. As I told Edna and
Onesia, Cleveland Family Chronicles Research Society is for *all* Cleveland
researchers, and I am thrilled to be meeting some of our African-American
cousins and will greatly appreciate any contributions you can make to our
database or newsletter.
If you would like a complimentary issue of our newsletter, just send me your
snail mail address.
Good luck with your research!
Love and blessings,
Vikki Lyn Cleveland

As an African American genealogy researcher, it would really help me if you
know your CLEVELAND ancestors had slaves and a will, to let me know the
disposition of the slaves in the will/s. They were listed as property.
I am not only looking for my ancestors, but the name/s of the slave
holder/s. My ultimate, yet maybe unrealistic goal, is to find out WHERE in
AFRICA my ancestors came from. THAT is one of my heart's desire; the other
is to VISIT AFRICA someday. That is my homeland and I have a great longing
to just see it. I think you can understand that yourselves--to go home.
Please don't be ashamed if your ancestors had slaves; you didn't have them.
But you can help right that wrong by posting to AFRIGENEAS, an African
ancestors genealogy mailing list, any information you have on wills where
there were slaves listed. Many White people are doing that now, and it is
helpful and very much
appreciated by us (African Americans).
Thanks for your help.

Ethel Craven-Sweet researching THEODORE CLEVELAND will be offline for
approximately a month. I am moving.
When I return, I will contact all who have written me. Thanks for your
help.
FYI, I am African American and I AM STILL ALL OF YOUR COUSIN.

I appreciate the responses to my first post on my search for Mary Cleveland
who marrid Daniel Cumbie in Pike County, GA in 1832. I have discovered
another Cleveland in the mix and thought that I would throw it in and see if
anybody recognizes anything:
James Cleveland, Mary Cleveland, and Wiley Cleveland apparenlty lived in
Pike County, GA in 1830-1840, time period. As mentioned earlier, Mary
married Daniel Cumbie and they moved to Stewart County, GA where she died by
1846. James Cleveland moved to Stewart County, GA by 1850. Wiley
apparently remained in Pike County where he left a will.
Any assistance will be appreciated.
