Hi, there! I'm hoping someone on this list will be able to help me. I'm descended from James Clendenin and Margaret Anderson. In my search for James' father, I keep finding references to Charles Clendenin (who is supposedly the son of William Glendining), but cannot find links to any actual sources connecting the three together, aside from mention of a document showing that Charles signed for James' pay during the war.
Is there anyone here who could point me in the right direction? Has anyone found more solid evidence, or is Charles just presumed to be his father because of the receipt of pay?
Thanks in advance!
Melissa Davis
Hi,
I found Letters of Administration for Thomas Clendenin on Ancestry.com...he
is new to me. He died in 1759 in East Nottingham Twp, Chester Co,
Pennsylvania. Thomas was a millwright and owned forty odd acres there. He
left a widow, Mary, and four small children, their names are not mentioned
in the papers.
Does anyone know who the children were and how Thomas may fit into the
scheme of things? There is mention of a John Clendennan assignee of Isaiah
Suder who was paid something from the estate...other names mentioned are:
Rowland Rogers, executor, Rob't Macky and Elisha Gatchel, bondsmen; Thomas
Carson, John Baylay, Jeremiah Gatchell, Joseph Willson, John Meek, Henry
Miller, Robert Erwin, Michael Wallace, Wm. Curry, John Glen, John Caldwell
and Samuel Erwin, were all paid money from the estate.
Could the John Clendennan have been the John that lived in Oxford Twp,
Chester Co married to Margaret Steele? Perhaps a brother to Thomas?

Gday Lee and all:)
good to hear from u Lee and others on this forum
Ive been trying to study the book house of glendonwyn the last few weeks and totally agree with lee and honey re the following remarks they made
"House of Glendonwyn" by G. T. Clindening. I agree with Honey Lanham on this
one. There are compelling details that are no doubt correct, but we need to
put this book into perspective and use it as a guide towards finding the
actual records all over again in order make our own assessment as to what
the situation is in the complex saga of the Clendinning / Glendinning
Surname. There was a time when anyone with the same surname was considered
related and a "cousin." These days have passed, as we have better access to
old records and the availability of DNA as an extremely useful tool
when I first started research into our clendinnen name I used to think that all with similar surnames are related but I learnt is not always the case
I do know however that the Clendinnens in South Australia and ones in Victoria Australia are related
and those Of John deaker clendinnens(my gggrandfather Samuel Alfred Clendinnens) brother are related
apparently our Clendinnen lot have a strong connection thru DNA to the Armstrong clan Who were in co down at same time as our lot and were also border Reivers in Scotland Would like to pursue that further too See how and where we connect
Pat bird in England has done a fantastic job in trying to trace our Clendinnen Family in Ireland etc as his wife connects to our lot of Clendinnens
There were Clindinnings In Co down thru the joseph Clindinning and Betty McElroy line whose Descendants some moved back to Berwickshire in Scotland and name reverted back to Clendinnen
That is another lot im interested to Pursue
My Cousin in America has a Copy of House of Glendonwyn , as I do, and his copy is signed by the Author to his cousin Sydney Claude Ellis Clendinnen(My grandfather) And im curious too, Could we connect to Gerald Talbots clindinning line??
and ive also noticed several trees on ancestry with The William glendinning and rose Ann Kirkpatrick Lineage which several have stated That particular Lineage may not be as correct as People thought
Yes A William glendinning did go to co down and Married a rose ann FISHER , Patrick bird found that Marriage and had several children but my thought is GTC may have confused Glendinning lineages There
According to a family tree found in a library in Kirkcudbright...the
Glendoning Family Tree...it states that William of Borgue purchased the
estate in Quarterland in Co Down, and died there in 1764
This William Glendinning was Presbyterian
GTCS line is thru Alexander Clindinning(glendinning) Born 1734 in killyleagh and married Jane Wilson 3 August 1756 In killyleagh Co down
what is interesting too re his line and Lees and my line Is descendants of this line followed a Medical Or ministry Profession
Will email Pat Bird and his input into this is always very interesting
great to see people relating on this Glendinning /Clendinnen Ancestry
Regards
Cathy:)
Cathy,
I descend from Archibald Glendenning of Virginia.
I have done extensive research but have never been able to prove his
parentage.
First, forget spelling, it is all over the map. I have a will where the
name of the
deceased is spelled 3 different ways in his own will. Spelling was
optional until
about 1900 when spelling became a bit more organized. About 2000 or
earlier,
it seems to have started falling apart again, but I digress.
I have recently done the autosomal testing through Family Tree DNA. I
highly
recommend it for anyone. But it is the first DNA test that actually
links women
to real time relatives. I have almost a thousand matches and have found
some
helpful links.
I have used "23 and me" for my husband. That testing is geared more towards
health issues but does get some genealogy links.
I have friends who have used ancestry.com's autosomal testing. I like
FTDNA a
bit better for their matching setup. And ancestry.com is now known for
dropping
services--so who knows when they will drop their autosomal matching?
FTDNA and, I think, all the rest now charge about $99 US for the test.
I only have a few links on my Glendenning/Clendenning/Clendenen line and
would like to see
more.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, much of House of Glendonwyn is probably
bogus--just a compilation
of loose bits of facts, history, family tales, hearsay, and fantasy.
Honey Lanham Dodge, Texas
www.lanhamsource.com
is my website. Archibald is listed there as Clendenen which is the way
my end of the family started
spelling it.
