Virginia, Robert of Bourbon County, KY is likely son of Charles. He was
brother to William Clendenen "of Mason County, Virginia", whom he appointed
as "his personal representative" in the matter of his military pension. He
was in Augusta, Greenbrier, and Kanawha Counties, then Bourbon County, KY
and finally Fairfield County, OH, where he died in 1808.

Eunice, your husband is definitely a cousin to me! There are probably many of us on the list who descend from Charles Clendenin for whom Charleston, WV was named. marsha moses

Hi Phyllis,
The Clendinen family group you are interested in aren't mine, but I have in
my notes cut and paste references to the Virginia Land, Marriage and Probate
Records 1636-1850, references from a FTM CD. I'd also years ago photocopied
the extracts from one of the publications that the references were taken,
Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia...by Lyman Chalkley,
1845-1800, 3 volumes. I have not worked with this and don't need copies (I
presume you mean from the original documents), but thought it might be
useful if you don't already have this.
The Charleston group appears, DNA wise, to connect to my James Clendinning,
U.E.L. Line, just don't know how or when in the past 500 years!
I hope this does not scramble too much in transmission.

Hi all,
I am currently in Salt Lake City and will get digital mages of records, if
you have a source citation or need a better copy of Botetourt? Greenbrier,
Kanawha, Nicholas or later counties of Clendinen records email me. It may
take a while to get them to you as I will be here until 11 March and won't
have time while here. I am exhausted when I leave the library!
Marsha, had we shared our common Clendinen interest?

There seems to be another Robert Clendenin living in southwest
Virginia at about the same time as the siblings, children of Charles:
George, Robert, William, Eleanor Stephenson, and Alexander were moving west.
These brothers and one sister seem to have pretty much stayed close together
during their lives, from Augusta to Greenbrier to Kanawha to Mason County,
Virginia on the Ohio River. Robert, however, crossed the river and went on
to Bourbon County, Kentucky and then Fairfield County, Ohio where he died
and was buried.
The records for these two Roberts seemed pretty much muddled
together. I don't know if there are two separate men. Can anyone help?

Hi Mitch,
I'm not familiar with your family group excepting I have references to US Census, so not much help here. You might want to have a look at the records available on-line at the PRONI. I worked on the Clendinning records here last year in the hopes of putting together some family groups, which I did, but there are so many Clendinning, etc. that I was a bit overwhelmed. There's some great stuff there to work with. My interest is in the Clendinning that immigrated to Canada, thought I'd be able to link more up to Ireland than I managed as I've done a lot of research on the Ontario ones in particular...but I've not been able to research on this since last June unfortunately.
I would be pleased to see this list revived, as I've felt much in a black hole with hardly anyone to bounce things off of.
I have two lines, one the Clendinning, U.E. line of James and Rebecca of New Jersey who settled in the Niagara District of Upper Canada after the American Revolution; James was native of America and the other line of Rev. John Clendinnen, an itinerant Wesleyan Methodist Minister of Co. Down Ireland, born ca. 1770. I'm stuck finding the parents in both lines.

Hi
My name is Mitch Clendening, and I am wondering if anyone is interested in reviving this list.
I am descended from Robert W. Clendening, born Oct 1810 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He left Ireland with with mother, Ann, one brother, John, and at least two sisters, Alice and Elizabeth. It’s possible he had another sister, Mary.
The family is said to have landed in Canada around 1826. The first record I have for the family is in Miami County, Indiana in the 1840 census.

Marsha: I just found something else that connects William and Robert. On
Robert's military pension file he designates "his brother", William, as
his "personal representative" to collect his military pension from the
Commonwealth of VA. This was 4 Nov 1801, Kanawha County Court. He made the
same designation three more times, in 1803, 1805 and 1806.

Who was the Robert Clendenin 1744-1808 married to? Oh, wait, I see that I have saved an e-mail from you in 2005 in the spot for Robert Clendenin married to Margaret Fletcher. He would have been a brother to my William Clendenin married to Margaret Handley. So we are the same family. I am still interested in the Clendenins. Please keep me on the list.
I descend from Jenny (Jane) Clendenan) married Wm. Robertson 6-23/25-1795 in
Madison Co., KY. Marriage records transcribed from Madison Co. Marriage
Records, by Judge W. Rodes Shackelford's transcription has the Robertson
name as Robinson. The marriage Bond clearly has the signatures of Wm.
Robertson and James Robertson. Roberson is also listed on the marriage
record, Robinson in not on the document at all. From FTDNA Family Finder DNA
testing it is believed that the father of Jenny (Jane) Clendenin may be John
Clendenin b 1744 and Mary Stewart b 1733, John the son of Archibald b 17 and
Esther Mayse b 1711.
Thank You,
Vertutis-Gloria-Merces
Larry Robertson
I too would like to be kept in the loop. I have ties to Greeneville, TN.
Hi Lori. Glad to see your still on the board.

I am happy to share anything that I have. I descend from Charles Clendenin for whom the city of Charleston, WV (NOT Charlestown, WV) is named. I descend from his son, William. I was a member of the Clendenin mail list many years ago when we had lots of discussions about the massacre that took place in what is now Greenbrier County, WV in 1763 in which Archibald Clendenin while his wife and at least one daughter were carried off by Indians. I wonder how many different Clendenin groups we have represented on this mail list. marsha moses

Obituary: Robert Clendening
Miami County Sentinel
2 APR 1891
Robert Clendening, sr., who died March 27th, 1891, was born October 15, 1810, in Tyrone county, Ireland. His life on earth completed a cycle of eighty years, five months and twelve days. At the age of fifteen years he came to America and located in the Dominion of Canada. In 1833 he removed to Miami County. His first real estate was pre-empted on what is now the Solomon See farm in Jefferson township, two miles west of the village of Denver. In 1849 he enlarged his possessions by purchasing a quarter section of land in Richland township, where he resided until his death. December 8th, 1839, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Clymer, who bore him nine children, five of whom survive their mother, who died March 14, 1863. The subject of this sketch was married to Mrs. Nancy Waite in 1864. To this marriage was born one daughter, now living. In 1866 he married Mrs. Nancy Lawrence, his widow.
The deceased was a man who had seen Miami County in all its stages of prosperity rise from an almost unbroken wilderness, inhabited by a few sturdy pioneers, and the remnant of once powerful Indian tribes to take its place in the front rank of counties in Indiana. He has witnessed the disappearance of forests, the bridging of rivers, the building of canal and railroads, and the growth of Peru from an insignificant village to a prosperous city. His life's duration marks an epoch in the development of the great Northwest. He was a man hasty in action, violent in speech and at times imperious and exacting to those about him. In extenuation it may be said that no man ever discovered a taint of revenged nor a trace of malice in his make-up. He would go out of his way to meet anyone with whom he had had an altercation to offer the honest clasp of friendship. Nature gave him a forgiving spirit and a religious bent. In his latter days one might frequently find him in odd places engaged in a prayer of forgiveness for some rash expression. No mendicant ever stopped at this door and missed a welcome. The destitute and affluent alike knew him as "Uncle Robert." The old and the young, the learned and the ignorant found a companion in "Uncle Robert." He passed away without pain. The angel of death found him ready. To his spiritual advisor he spoke as follows: "I have a peace within that the world knows nothing of." The interment was at the Chili cemetery where a large concourse of friends bade a final adieu to all that was earthly of "Uncle Robert."
Would love to see some activity on this list and all the others I subscribe to. It seems that over the last couple of years, the activity has diminished down to nothing. I don't know if people have just set aside their research, looking elsewhere, or what but all the surname lists I subscribe to are the same - inactive!
