Hi Marsha,
Thank you for this tip. I also remembered Sharon's commenting on the
Jacobite, but could not remember what it was. I sure do miss her.
I will look up the references from the book page I quoted and see what it
refers to, it's simply a question of going to the Reference Library...so I'd
wondered if this Jacobite was a Scotsman or an Englishman after reading
on-line "ScotWArs Military History & Re-enactment" which has a thorough
description of the 1715 Uprise.
I'm toying with the idea that the John GLENDINNIN of Freehold might be
father to my James CLENDINNING, U.E. and his brother John, as the time line
seems to fit. Having investigated numerous other early families, all the
James and Johns seem to be accounted for. I am, though, assuming that the
research I've reviewed has been properly documented as most of what I have
looked at is other's work.
My theory for some time now has been some early floating CLENDINNING found
on Staten Island, N.Y. and then into N.J. but the records are so scanty, I'm
picking at straws. No one seems to have worked on them, at least that I'm
aware of.

Lee, I can remember having talked about this on this mail list many years
ago....so I took a look at the archives and found the following:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/clendenin/2008-02/1203301207
I went to:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search
and put clendenin in the mail list space and tried transported as the key
word.....you might try some other keywords to see if you can find more....I
almost for sure remember some discussion on Dobson's lists and ....hmmmm
just can't do it from memory.

John GLENDINNIN, of the Town of Freehold, Blacksmith, for fifty pounds
bought 80 acres of land in the Township of Freehold in the County of
Manmouth from Adam HUDE, Gentleman of Woodbridge, Co. Middlesex, in 1723. In
1734, John GLANDINNON sold the same in 1734 to Francis Van SCHAIACK of
Freehold, Farmer. [copy of Deeds from FHL Film]
John would therefore be born prior to 1702. Can anyone clarify who he is and
where he came from? From what I've researched in American records, he
appears to be the oldest of the "Johns" found in early America? I wonder if
he may be the same as noted in:
Jacobites of the '15. David Dobson. 1993, p31
"GLINDINNING, John, transported from Liverpool to Jamaica or Virginia on the
Elizabeth and Anne 29.6.1716, landed in Virginia. (CTB.31.208)
(SPC.1716.310) (VSP.1.185)"
Any input towards identifying him would be most appreciated.
