Captain James CLENDINNEN (CLENDENIN, CLENDENNEN, CLENDINAN, CLENDINNAN) was
a Captain of the sailing ship "Britannia" a 300 ton burthen which he sailed
twice from Belfast to Savannah, Georgia and Charlestown, North Carolina in
1771 and 1772. In 1773, I believe this same "Britannia" sailed from Maryland
to Newry, Captain Scott, and "foundered at sea; the crew were taken up and
carried to Dominica." The "Britannia" appears to have been built in or
shortly prior to 1766, as it first sets out to Charlestown from Newry in
April of 1766. [Note: "Britannia" was a popular name for a ship, there were
several.] This information I culled from the Belfast News-Letter. It is
noted that he has "many years Experience in the Trade" so I would suppose he
was born at the least before let's say, 1740. I'm interested in finding out
more about Capt. James CLENDINNEN and wonder if anyone can identify him. It
is quite possible that he did not return to Northern Ireland, and settled in
America; or may have originally hailed from America; or may have returned to
his homeland, presumably Northern Ireland, in which case, who was his
family?
