Hey Steve, I do have this rather poor transcription of the will of
William CLENDINEN of Quarterland. Guess if this is accurate you can
eliminate him as the father since there is no "Adam" listed.
As far as the spelling of CLENDENIN goes, don't shut any door. I have
many primary documents and in at lest a few, the name CLENDENIN is
spelled several different ways in the same document. After 30 years I am
still finding new and creative ways people have of causing me heart-burn.
Have a good 'un, Carol
In the name of God Amen I willm Clendinen of Quarterland in the Parish of
Killinchy and County of Downe Farmer Weake in body and disposing being of
perfect mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner
Following First I give and bequeath to my sons and daughters Jean Andrew
Jas Willm Charles Roas and Alexr Clendinen the sum of one shilling and one
penney star to each of them to be paid in three months after my decese by
my Executers therin after named in demanded I give devise and bequeath
unto my
son-in-law John Morrow and Elesebath his wife all my worldly substance and
effects of chattles of every kind or nature as also all my right and tittle
and &s the two part of the farm of land possessed in Quarterland aforsaid
subject to the payment of the several legacies mentd and of this my last
will I do give to my grandaughter Roas Clendeinen the other third part of
the farm which is now possessed by her father Andrew Glendinen. I do
appoint the said John Morrow and John Stuart in Quarterland my sole
executers in wittness whereof I have set my hand and seal this the seventh

Hi,
I agree with what has been written as this area has been frustrating for me.
My spelling of Clendenan has been directly traced back to Ireland to 1695 at
which time my brickwall has arisen. I cannot determine if the name was in
Ireland immediately then or goes back further to the time of the
"Plantations". It has been suggested that Adam Clendenan, my ancestor,
came from Scotland to Ireland sometime between 1691 and 1695, however, I
have not been able to prove it. It also has been suggested that Adam's
father was William. This has caused me difficulty in determining which one
is correct as there are three that I know about. They are William of
Quarterland, William of Borgue or William of Staplegorton.
My guess for now is more research.

I think we need to somehow try and get access to the Glendoning Family tree If still available in kirkcudbright Library, On there it does state that William Glendinning Of Borgue acquired the land in Co Down, and he was Presbyterian, not William of Staplegorton.(who was Catholic)..As The Book House of Glendonwyn Suggests
I think the author may have mixed these 2 williams up as their Birth dates were similar
So if anyone on list has contacts in Kirkcudbright who could maybe check if that family tree is still available there, i think might be the way to go, or if theres some actual records in kirkcudbright of william glendinning of borgue acquring quarterland in down
I have joined a Kircudbright Forum and Asked re this, but no reply as yet

?Fort?Clendenin in what is now the Charleston, WV area....?was constructed in the year 1788 by Colonel? George Clendenin and a group of Virginia Rangers ...and is recognized as the first permanent settlement in the area. The town was named Charleston in tribute to Colonel Clendenin's Father whose name was Charles. In 1794 the city was officially established by the Virginia General Assembly and later Clendenin's Fort which had been built on their own Property was changed unfortunately to Fort Lee...
The area is now the Capitol of West Virginia......
?
George Clendenin traveled with a group of " Rangers " through the Valley and into the now Charleston area with several of his brother's plus their Father Charles....The Father Charles Clendenin died within Clendenin's Fort and was buried in the Rose Garden within the Fort...
?
I was born and reared within the shadow of Charleston, WV? and have herd the above story for as long as I can remember...

Doubt the House of Glendonwyn is under copyright, it has been

Have not worked on Clendenin for 3/4 years but willing to help if I can.

Gday:)
I have a Copy of the Book House of Glendonwyn
Check with your state Libraries in USA, someone may have a Copy, Unfortunately its not digitalised on Line
Several Libraries and Genealogy Societies in Aus have a Copy, also scotland and england
Im also Interested in Obtaining info on the Glendoning Family tree which apparently the Kirkcudbright Library in Scotland Has possession of...which may Squash the theory that William of Quarterland was NOT william of staplegorton but william of Borgue
But also need more documentary evidence too...Also the William of Staplegorton was Catholic, William of Borgue and Quarterland was Presbyterian
Regards
Cathy:)
I would be I interested in obtaining a copy as well.

Have not worked on Clendenin for 3/4 years but willing to help if I can.

My husband, Harold Clendenon, had his DNA tested a few years ago and found
that he was a direct decendent of the three Clendenon, Charles, John, and
William that came from Scotland to West Virginia. ( Charlestown, West
Virginia, Clendenning, West Virginia). The Lady that did this reasearch has
since died.

Eunice, What can you tell me about James Clendenon/Clendinen who may or
maynot be the son of Charles? He may have died in Kentucky.
Thank you for your help.

Im in Australia and have a Direct Line of CLENDINNEN from Ireland to Australia Via JOHN CLENDINNEN born circa 1770 in Co Down...Tho his actual Birth has not been found...He was a Wesleyan Minister in Ireland retiring to Bideford in Devon where he died in 1855
My mother always used to Say the Name originally was Glendinning from Border Areas of Scotland, but name was Changed when Ancestors moved from Scotland to Ireland
I have a Copy of the Book...House of Glendonwyn.written by Gerald Talbot Clindinning, a Cousin of My Grandfather Sydney Claude Ellis Clendinnen...Fascinating book on History of Glendinnings from Scotland to Ireland
But apparently there is Some Contraversy re some info in Book...So leading to People in America/Australia/England doing Dna studies to Try and Find Actual Connections with Descendants of those in book
Some Clendinnens from my branch sent in Dna samples, but found that the paper trail with book did not co incide with dna results..instead apparently we closely connected to the armstrong clan on male side and possibly a clendinnen female
ive been looking at several trees on ancestry re william glendinning born circa 1680 in staplegorton in dumfriess scotland who went to co down...some have him married to a rose ann kirkpatrick(no proof found re that)...And had a few children in scotland before moving to Ireland...Yet roseanne according to several trees was born circa 1690, and some trees have children born to her when she is 10 , 12 etc...Researchers tho have located a Marriage in killyleagh to a Rose Ann Fisher in 1713 and seven children born to them
so interested is anyone on this board researching this family...as theres a lot of misinformation out on net and on trees re this family
thanks
