Yeah, I saw that too and wondered the same thing - but then again, I wasn't
really wondering...
The only reason I sent that in to begin with was so that all those folks out
there looking for Thomas wouldn't see this one in an index somewhere and
waste their time doing the research. I also recall that this same Thomas
Clendenning had been there for several years buying and selling land.
It just occurred to me that Thomas was as far as I researched because
anything after his will was beyond my timeline. I wonder if maybe his son or his
brother, either of the two John's, showed up in that area after his death?

Hi All,
Not that this has anything to do with any of the others we are talking about
but I just wanted to remind everyone that there was another Thomas
Clendenning out there in Maryland in 1762. This one appears to have been here on his
own and died in Maryland with a wife and son still living in Scotland.

I have a Christopher Glendinning/Glendenning in my Family Tree. He is the youngest son of Thomas Glendinning and Mary Weir of Hawick in the Borders of Scotland and is my GG/grandfather's brother. We believe that Robert Glendinond was the father of Thomas who lived in Roberton in the Parish of Cavers. I guess the different spelling of our name came about because of the various pronounciations. The Border skirmishes could have had something to do with their departure to America.

Some time ago someone posted information on a Christopher Clendenning/Glendenning in one of the Virginia counties.
Does anyone have a copy of that posting or remember which county he was located in?
Christopher is not a traditional Glendenning name and sounds rather English to me. I'm trying to determine if this Christopher was a descendant of the Jno Glendening who was transported in 1715/-16 landing at Yorktown, VA.
Thanks,
Sharon
Could this be the one?

Hi, I don't have information on Christopher Glendenning, but I wanted to
thank you for sharing all the information that you do. It is fascinating to
me. To my knowledge, my ancestors came to southwest Wisconsin in the 1840s
or 50s. Quite a few descendants are still here. The names most common in our
strain are John, James and Mary. We spell the last name Glindinning, but I
have been told that Glendenning is how those who first came here spelled it.
Again, thanks for sharing the connections you find.
Mary Glindinning
Shullsburg, Wis.
We have known for some time that a John Glendening/Glendenning was transported to America on the Elizabeth & Anne, master Edward Trafford, and was put ashore in Virginia in 1716.
On the Scots-DNA website today I found John's name included in a list of men (1301 in number) who were Jacobites, had been captured and imprisoned. 639 of these men were transported to America or Jamaica. The lists were compared to each other and only those who were transported were included in the list that was posted.
I finally found John listed as Jno. Gledening when transported; as Jon Glendenman while imprisoned in Wigan. The important part of this was the listing of his home parish and county: Ramsey, in Northumberland (England).
While this doesn't tell us what happened to him after he arrived in America, it at least tells us where he was from originally. This is a step in the right direction.
