Hi,
Does anyone have information on an Andrew Clendenen or Clendenin living in Westmoreland Co., PA in 1810.
Andrew said to have been born in Ireland in 1768 and married a woman named Mary, LNU.
In 1810, they had three boys and two girls all under the age of 10.
Need the information to help track a potential new participant for DNA study. They have both Clendenen on the father's side and Glendening on the mother's side.
Thanks,
Sharon
Laurine,
You said "Would be interested in seeing the legal documents where the
Clendennin land was confiscated in New Jersey."
I did a Google search on Clendening and NJ loyalists and came up with the
following: This was copied from this website
http://www.wrwalker.com/page16.html
"CLENDENNING Family
NOTE: Most of this information was graciously shared by Sheila Webb of
Saugerties, Ulster Co., NY and Steve at steve(a)sandpondsociety.org.
10. James Clendenning Sr b. Knowlton Twp., Sussex Co., NJ d.bef. 26 Jan 1797
Newark, Lincoln Co., Ontario m., (unknown).
HISTORY: Book P, pg 265 of the Council of Proprietors of West Jersey (survey
return dated March 21, 1774, recorded May 5, 1774). The warrant for this
land was originally issued to John Bullen (heir-at-law to James Bullen).
That warrant passed through several hands between 1768-1774. James Clandinin
purchased that warrant by deed dated March 19, 1774. The land, originally
estimated at 200 acres, was originally located in Hardwick Twp., Sussex Co.,
NJ Hardwick is the next town northeast of Knowlton Twp. The survey was drawn
in a very strange shape, as it includes the inlet and the outlet of Sand
Pond (a 16 acre lake), but not most of the middle of the pond. Mr. Clandenin
and his family settled on about 8 acres in the northern part of the
property, well away from the pond. Very literally, this would have been the
only area of tillable ground on the entire 200 acres. The site remains
rugged yet truly beautiful. The cleared ground extended to the property
line, which was the foot of the Kittatinny Ridge (then called Pahaqualong
Mountain -- today, the Appalachian trail is located at the top of that
ridge). The cleared area went down to a swamp and the Jacksonburg Creek
(then called Stouts Brook). There sat the farm wedged in between the rocky
geology of the mountain and the swampy forest below. To say the site was
isolated would be an understatement. As the crow flies, the nearest neighbor
was at least a mile away at the time. This area was one of the last places
in Sussex/Warren Counties to be settled, and was primarily forested. A home
was built, although we are unsure of any outbuildings. Ground was cleared,
and a few stonerows were built. There, a small hand-dug spring exists that
we do not yet know if Mr. Clandenin dug, or another later farmer.
On December 11, 1778, the New Jersey Legislature passed an act allowing
confiscation of lands held by Loyalists. On March 25, 1779, a judgement was
entered against Mr. Clandenin as a Loyalist, and the State of New Jersey
became the owner of this tract. (This information was taken from deed book
E-2, page 307, Sussex County Clerk's Office.) In or about 1815, the State
transferred the land to Sussex County, which sold the land at auction to a
Mr. Smyth. In 1825, Warren County was formed and the county line ran through
the old Clandenin tract. Most of the property was now located in Hardwick
Township, Warren County. The extreme northeastern portion of the property
(including the entirety of the plantation) was now located in Stillwater
Township, Sussex County. The farm in Hardwick was used during the Clandenin
ownership, based on physical evidence discovered from the site during the
recent archaeological investigation. Steve Kallesser is currently awaiting
the archaeologists' report on the site. The websites below have pictures of
the farm today...

shows some of the archaeology team sitting at the old spring on the
Clandenin plantation. This picture is also from the Clandenin plantation,
looking down towards the swamp.

I received this message from Cathy O'Hare today. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but perhaps you can quickly plan a research trip to your FHL if you need free access to Ancestry.

Re: Discontinued Access to Ancestry.com Databases
For many years, Ancestry.com has provided free access to patrons of family history centers around the world. Ancestry has informed the Church that as of April 1, 2007, it will discontinue this free access to the full Ancestry.com service.
>
Free access through Ancestry.com to the following databases will continue:
>
1. Index and images for the 1880, 1900 and 1920 U.S. censuses
2. Full name indices for the British 1841-1891 censuses (England and Wales)
3. World War I draft cards indices as created and miscellaneous other
databases
>
Free access is likely to be discontinued for the remainder of the
Ancestry.com databases including:
>
1. Index and images for the 1930 U.S. census
2. Index and images for the 1901 British census (England, Scotland, and Wales)
At this point, Ancestry.com is not offering an option for family history centers to independently purchase commercial or library site licenses. Patrons, of course, may choose to subscribe directly to Ancestry.com.
>
Free access to online databases is important and we therefore intend to add many new databases to FamilySearch.org. Much of the data preparation will be accomplished through the online indexing program available at FamilySearchIndexing.org. We encourage you to visit the website to learn >more.
>
Volunteers have already begun indexing the 1900 U.S. census and other
projects. Other censuses and vital record collections will be indexed as
soon as the 1900 U.S. census project is completed. The more volunteers that participate, the sooner access can be provided. Since access to databases on FamilySearch.org is free to all, we anticipate that this will be of great interest to individuals around the world. We are also exploring
opportunities to provide broader access to additional databases from other online service providers.
>
Please inform patrons regarding our plans to provide access to records and invite them to help by participating in the FamilySearch Indexing projects. We will communicate as more information becomes available.
Thank you for all that you do on behalf of our patrons.

Hi Lee:
Truthfully, when Sharon contacted me, wasn't sure of my relationship to
James CLENDENNIN.
My MAY file is relatively new and still trying to absorb the relationships.
Checked and it appears Eva May CLENDENNING m. Peter MAY (son of Wm. MAY, the
loyalist) 29 Aug. 1788 in Albany, NY. Eva died 1797 and is buried in May
Family Cemetery in St. Catherines, Canada.
I keep getting this particular file mixed up. Thought Eva Mae CLENDENNING
was perhaps my 3 x g. grandmother, but the son John MAY was born to Peter's
second wife Magdalena Bradt so erred. John MAY, son of Peter & Magdalena
Bradt is my direct line to William. He married a Mary LEIGHTON and their
youngest daughter Eliza Melvine MAY m. John Geo. COOMBS, parents to my
maternal grandmother Carrie COOMBS m. John F. WHITTIER.
James MAY (an uncle), son of Eva May CLENDENNING, m. a Catherine
CLENDENNING - now this info has not been proofed and no m. date for James
entered yet. Just strikes me as strange.
Am interested in finding the wife of James CLENDENNING the Loyalist who rode
with Butler. Info on him comes from R. Robert Mutrie as Nornet site as:
"CLENDENNIN, James lived in Nobleton, Sussex County, New Jersey during
colonial times. He and his sons Abraham and Walter served in Butler's
Rangers during the American Revolution. Following the war they settled in
Grantham Twp., Lincoln Co. A younger son James Jr. married Catherine (Plato)
Wyckoff, widow of Peter Wyckoff then settled in Woodhouse Township by 1800"
It should be noted that the spelling of this name seems to change
continually - one place with the g and another not. IMHO, the state's
taking over of Clendennin property in N.Jersey should be on record?
I do have information on the children of Eva May CLENDENNING & Peter MAY
(his lst marriage). One child in there not sure who the mother is - seems
to be b. after death of Eva & prior to marriage to Magdelena. Have not
checked death of Eva yet, so that may prove to be an error in Mutrie's
tract.
What is strange is the number of marriages and connections between the
families of men who rode with Butler.

Cannot tell. Am looking confirmation of birth for a James Clendennin
marriage & wife's name. He was a loyalist and came to Canada with two sons.
My info is:
CLENDENNIN, James lived in Nobleton, Sussex County, New Jersey during
colonial times. He and his sons Abraham and Walter served in Butler's
Rangers during the American Revolution. Following the war they settled in
Grantham Twp., Lincoln Co. A younger son James Jr. married Catherine (Plato)

source: http://www.nornet.on.ca/~jcardiff/index1.html (under Long Point
Settlement - R. Robert Mutrie transcript). (note: James is on the
Butler's Rangers Roster.
Two Clendennin women married descendants of William MAY - another loyalist
who is my 4x g. Grandfather, descendant of Palatines who came to Colony
1709.
Mined the following, but somehow missed putting the source for first one -
may be from New Brunswick

Adam Clendenin of Somerset County, New Jersey, according to tradition,
was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. This line intermarried with the Treats and
the Cranes who were among the founders of Newark, New Jersey. The goods of
John Clendenin and the plantation of James Clendenin of Sussex County, now
Warren Co, New Jersey, were sold on March 25, 1779 under judgment against
them as loyalists. Patriots whose names are found upon revolutionary
rosters are James of Maryland, Lt. John of North Carolina, Samuel and Isaac
of New Jersey and John of Pennsylvania, whose descendants have a set of
spoons made from the silver mounting of his sword.
Another research, Cathy, is looking for Clendennins and she has a direct
connection with a Grandfather. Think she told me one of them had a
connection to Barnum Circus. They moved from Virginia or Carolinas to
Kentucky after a lengthy court case of some sort. May I give her your
e-mail or?

The information I sent to you is mainly from John Cardiff's site:
http://www.nornet.on.ca/~jcardiff/index1.html which is under copywrite.
The Clendennin quote re Loyalist group is taken from Robert Mutrie who does
copywrite work and has written much on the settlers of the Long Point
Settlement. I have ordered his extracts for my Coombs, Bacon & May lines.
I have not met Lee Dickson and know nothing of her book. Is she a
Canadian?
Have not ordered Robert's extract on this family and still debating. They
are cheap at $12.00 Cdn. Two Clendennin women married into my MAY group.
Only found out about the MAY family connection to Palatines, loyalists etc.
about 4 months ago. Lots of reading to do so still researching prior to
ordering anything. Am interested in the female line Clendennin as well as
the loyalist one. Doubt Clendenning can be a Scots name as they kept track
of women's maiden names. The maiden names of women appear on most death
registrations after 1855 in Scotland as well as in the Old Parish Records.
Even in Canada, many graves show the woman's maiden name. Would be
interested in seeing the legal documents where the Clendennin land was
confiscated in New Jersey. Reading came across this death in Ossian info
"Jacob Clendennin Nov. 4, 1559, aged 81, " and am wondering if the date is
not a misprint. Noted there was a Porter family in this area and believe a
Whittier or two married Porters.

Cannot tell. Am looking confirmation of birth for a James Clendennin

Wyckoff, widow of Peter Wyckoff then settled in Woodhouse Township by 1800

Butler's Rangers Roster.
Two Clendennin women married descendants of William MAY - another loyalist
who is my 4x g. Grandfather, descendant of Palatines who came to Colony
1709.
Mined the following, but somehow missed putting the source for first one -
may be from New Brunswick

Information on the New Jersey Clendenins - source is:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/QUAKER-ROOTS/1998-02/0888128071
May I give her your
e-mail or?

I picked this up from another list I belong to and haven't had time to check it out completely but ...
"The National Archives and Records Administration has issued proposed regulations that would, among other things, raise the fee for a Civil War pension from the already somewhat high $37 to $125, with fees for
other mail requests also going up by large amounts; Revolutionary War pensions, for instance, jump to $60.
NASA published the proposed changes in the 26 February 2007 edition of the Federal Register (pages 8327-8329), and public comments are requested until
27 April 2007. You can read the proposed regulations and file public comments on the Web, and I strongly suggest that everyone do so; letters to Congress wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
To read the proposed new fees and to file public comments:
1. Go to http://www.regulations.gov/
2. Type "NARA-07-0001" (without the quotes) into the "Keyword or ID" box and click the "Submit" button.
3. Click either the PDF or Text icon on the screen that appears to read the actual proposed rules and fees.
4. Click the balloon under "Comments" to make your opinion known.
Again, public comments are closed on 27 April 2007; there's no need to send this message along to anyone else after that date. "
